"The first thing that she did was just kneel down, hug Knox and thanked him and thanked him for bringing that closure to her,"

Great, now somebody is gonna die of Coronavirus.

We have a scrapyard that pays for metals. Mostly for meth heads bringing in stolen copper wire and A/C coils, but eh...

When I was a kid, my cousin and I found a safe dumped next to a steep canyon road. It had been broken into with a blowtorch. Unlike the kid in this story, our solution was to see if we could make it roll to the bottom of the canyon. It was awesome.

SumoJeb: a magnet fishing kit

And now that I know THS is a thing, I'll probably end up getting involved in it.

Damn you, SumoJeb.

My dad used to magnet fish. I've been thinking about trying it. Seems like a fun way to kill a few hours.

Now this kid is going to spend the next 10-12 years thinking he can find another safe in some body of water. But only keep getting the same metallic rocks and rusty trinkets he was already getting.

It's a heap of fun, especially if you are on any sort of old fur trade route, etc.
She hasn't found anything of real value, but even researching every day household items you find can tell a story.

The best part about it is the price. A good magnet and rope is maybe $40. Way cheaper than most our hobbies.

Fishing the normal way, I brought up a wallet that had been down there for quite a while.  It contained several bills that had turned into mush which were impossible to tell the denominations.  It did have a somewhat legible military ID card and we turned the whole thing over to the police.

Until you find a live grenade, then your day could be ruined.

I wish those magnets could somehow pick up *all* sunken metals...

/ what does a magnet that strong do to any electronics that it picks up?...
// assuming the electronics are otherwise salvageable
/// wonder why they chose that place to start their magnet-hunt

I hope the kid got a free hernia to go along with that safe.

I briefly got caught in a youtube wormhole watching magnet fishing videos. Mostly euros who go fishing around old WW2 battlesites. Amazing to see them pull up old hand grenades and submachine guns.

Depends on the electronic device.  If it's solid state (like most smartphones), a magnet won't hurt them.  Water on the other hand....

The reason we've all grown up being told not to ever let a magnet get near our electronic devices has to do with moving parts, and more importantly, magnetic storage drives.  Solid state technology isn't harmed by reasonable* magnetic fields like these.

*Now, if you expose it to an incredibly high magnetic field....  Of course, they'll pull the fillings out of your teeth at some point too.  There's even video of frogs being levitated within insanely high magnetic fields, due to the chemistry of the water in their body.  Fun times!
