It is in this moment that I imagine an alternate reality where Adolf Hitler flees to Argentina and writes several books detailing how the Nazis lost the war because the Germans did not have access to the Soviet Tank unit, which was "the only realistic option when you begin to play high level online matches".

The choice of words was very fascinating and some may say that it was even highly progressive, given that videogames would not even exist as an entity for about another quarter-century, and that the books very much read in a way that would be immediately comprehensible and understandable to the "gamers" in following decades.

Hitler writes in the book that he tried everything, but realistically, it was simply easier to "shoot up the tech tree" and that "pretty much whomever makes the first Soviet Tank wins".  But since the winners write history, of course, there's no shortage of grade school reading material that argues it was on Hitler to "git gud" and "stop being a noob".

It's no wonder the man was so angry, but I think that to play videogames at a high level, you really do need to be angry at everyone, and that when you finally get into the Top 1,000 on the leaderboard after dedicating nearly two decades of your life to a single videogame, you look mom dead in the eye and ask her if she still thinks videogames are a waste of time.

If only there was a Command and Conquer game that dabbled in an alternative timeline where gamers finally rise up, as opposed to the current one, where gamers are worse than ISIS.  Sad.  So, so sad.

On topic, when will they be working on the superior sequel and its wonderful expansion. Because RA2/YR was the best RTS to be made

Bear in mind that Microsoft has also been treating Age of Empires with respect, we are living in a timeline where there will soon be corporate board types who were not even alive when real-time strategy mattered, appealing to a small and declining audience that will happily part with their social security checks if you do not repeatedly call Command and Conquer a "Dota ripoff".

I do not speak authoritatively on the complex workings of developing the children's toys in the pursuit of maximum year-to-year operating revenues, but I'm guessing companies now realize the only way to make money on this genre is to turn your baseball cap backwards and say "How do you do, fellow Boomers?", as you release a newer and shinier version of an RTS game everybody is already comfortable with.

There is a tiny number of RTS games which hit some sort of reasonable standard, or can be appropriately modified, so that they can be played for years on end without turning into Soviet Tank rushes or furiously casting Bloodlust on your Ogres, and with the exception of StarCraft, most of those had to be substantially iterated to even get to that point.

And then consider that any of the actual leaps that would be innately interesting to players, as I cough into my keyboard while saying "strategic zoom", are going to lead to increasingly incomprehensible game states that can only be played by the most galaxy of all galaxy-brains, as I wonder why the space mechanics in Planetary Annihilation are utter garbage.

So there is zero sense in making a new RTS that may take years to "get right" and that will likely flame out before it holds up to the almighty glory of the e-Sports God, much in the same way there's no reason to make a better version of Counter-Strike because Counter-Strike is already the consummate videogame for children who are too poor to play paintball.

But more broadly, people used to buy RTSes because they could appeal to huge audiences across a huge range of modes, and in the year 2020, you don't need to pay money to play tower defense or dota or that degenerate hellspawn that became the hilarious thing known as "autochess", which means "this game you already played, but with blast processing" is pretty much the only way to make the genre profitable.

Makes you wonder if Blizzard is going to finally get around to doing a remaster of Warcraft III.  I sure hope so.  The company cares about its fans and I can't see them screwing it up.

Yeah I did a lot of that too. I gave the spy Tanya's guns, made a medium tank that shot lightning and moved so fast it wouldn't clear fog of war. My favorite though was I made it so you could build explosive barrels. So you just build them all the way to the enemy base and shoot one on your end.

RAEdit.exe was amazing.

I always wanted access to special units for custom maps, I wonder if you could make an entire civilian faction with buildings, vehicles, Technicians, etc.
My favourite thing about CC:RA was all the crazy units the Soviets had, especially anything that launches that giant fireball that does all sorts of collateral damage.

After RE3 I don't have much faith in EA's ability to make a decent RTS...units sometimes wouldn't even exchange fire and their pathfinding was utterly terrible. I've never experienced anything in a game like when you'd get Natasha (Soviet commando sniper) locked in stutter-step constantly re-adjusting her lock on a moving unit in perpetuity. I enjoy the RA series, but mistakes like that are pathetic and should never make it past an alpha build.

I am sorry but, despite my deep, deep love for Westwoods games (Dune 2000 was the one I grew up on but also played lots of RA2 and Tiberian Sun and lesser amounts of their other games), Total Annihilation is inarguably the best RTS ever made.

Probably because they can't see any way to wring more money out of it so get some good PR.

Anybody willing to buy the game before, will not change their mind because of the released source code, they will still buy it.

Good on them for doing this, but it isn't because they are changing to be nice and consumer friendly.

I mean it is an RTS.  It's also an FPS.  Purists hate it, though.  I expected this response.
