That's BUDGIE smuggler - I think it's an Austrialian slang term.

As in "Ah, wearing some budgie smugglers, are ya? Brave man!"

So they were smuggling meat and it wasn't filled with drugs? Is this a regular thing people do all the time or Covid related?

This has been going on for decades it's not really bologna like we think. It is actually a type of summer sausage and has a more bacony flavor (the correct name is actually. Salchichon) Mexicans love the stuff and it can be expensive and hard to get legally in the US.

All the time. Been going on forever. That and Mexican soft cheeses. People are nostalgic and want items that are harder or more expensive to get in the US.

Dumb question perhaps here, why is it so hard it import it legally?

Why do I feel this was a plot from a TV show?

Seriously, I think I saw something about Mexican sausage smugglers and thought "That's a thing?".

So, it has come to this.

I suppose Mexicans are as brand-conscious as anyone, but it seems like a U.S. processor could make this sausage here. Maybe under license or something to get a "correct" looking brand label.

I wonder if the problem could be that sometimes salchichón is made with horsemeat. That would stop it from being imported.

Nah this stuff doesn't. It really isn't that much different from bologna but it is a bit. The "Street value" always seems to be about 60 bucks for an entire package of it (or 15 bucks a quarter). Here is a recent facebook posting selling some: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/186181412611126. You can also see the premium that illegally imported cheeses go for: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/582505455895297, https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/658871174879907.

This reddit thread describes the practice pretty well. https://www.reddit.com/r/shiattyama/comments/2cqe9t/i_used_to_buy_illegal_mexican_bologna_ama/

Again I don't really get the appeal. For the price you can get much better processed meats, but it is a nostalgia thing.
