(National Review)   Rich Lowry of NRO wonders why Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hasn't gotten his participation trophy for skewing his state's death toll. It's like taking a shortcut to the one-mile mark in a coronavirus ultramarathon   (nationalreview.com) divider line

So, your best argument against the Florida Governor is, well, he's somehow hiding thousands of bodies from us?

Really?

Is it that incoceivable that Florida got it reasonably right?  Certainly compared to New York and New Jersey ("Let's force COVID-19 patients into nursing homes.  What could go wrong?").

Are you talking to anyone in particular, or are the voices in your head spilling out onto your keyboard?

Jesus. Nary a word of any sort of criticism in TFA. I did not know that de santis was such a smart leader. Don't believe me? It says so right in TFA.

What kills me about all of these "ha ha more people didn't die so you were wrong" things is:

1)  people still died, and perhaps we could have diminished those numbers had we taken greater caution for a longer time

2)  I wouldn't want to be counting those chickens yet, and certainly not so brazenly

Everything is two weeks in arrears, at least, when it comes to this virus.  I'm certainly not rooting for Florida to be worse.  Pride is not part of it, nor is the desire to gloat.  But I don't think we're in a position, today, to say "See you were all wrong and everything is awesome!"

Plus I live here.

I'm starting month four of isolation next week, because I care for a highly-vulnerable, elderly, sick parent.  So I'm stuck whether I like it or not.  I want to be free just as much as everyone else.  And I may not be until a solid vaccine is available.

I would be delighted if it were less serious than we thought.  But I'm not foolhardy enough to proclaim victory at this point, as Rich Lowry is.

DeSantis is a farking idiot regardless of how many people die.

Not sure how this is in any way unclear.

The headline seems to indicate that subby is aware of how full of shiat Rich Lowry is, and yet subby went ahead and decided to spread this bullshiat anyway.

With all respect, subby, this kind of hate-fueled bullshiat is every bit as dangerous to our nation as COVID-19. Please stop purposefully choosing to be a vector of disease.

Right there with you, man.  Although I have family here, and I will have to have contact with some of them.  My 88 year old dad needs my help soon and that I cannot refuse.

Meanwhile, if the Corona doesn't get me my wife is surely going to murder me soon.

I'm sure there were opinion columns between the 1st and 2nd wave of the 1918 pandemic making all kinda happy talk about how they handled it so well and so few people died.  And then the 2nd wave was so much worse.

hmm lets see? dimwit open up his beaches, party goers got infected, and spread it to other states. Yeah so much good decision making.  So, it isn't just that hes fudging the numbers.

And as for the FOX/republican  (Fopublicans? yeah that works) talking point New York forced nursing homes to take covid patients. Kind of a complex issue. But, if you care  about the detials - they had to put these people somewhere, only facilities that could separate the patients safely could take them.  Of course the whole thing got screwed up.  Sometimes you have to make bad calls.  Of course if you are trump, that's most of what you do.

The GOP just keeps moving those goalposts. I'm assuming now that there is no level of death that they won't try to normalize and/or pretend is a triumph.

All of these things happened and contributed to the undercount. But there's one other thing that made Florida different, and that was the weather. January, Feb, March and April are our peak season when we can open up our doors and windows and enjoy the outdoors. We weren't cooped up indoors like people in other states. Also, I am of A Certain Age and I and most of my friends took this seriously and stayed home.

Florida is now open and people are running around like idiots acting like the all clear has been declared. But we are now starting our very long and hot summer, when we do what people up north do in the wintertime -- we stay inside. So I expect numbers to go up this summer in Florida. We haven't seen the worst of it here yet.

If one of their first moves was to act forcefully to keep the coronavirus out of the nursing homes then that was indeed a very smart move. With limited resources you need to put those resources where they will do the most good. Let's see how the rest of things play out.

Out of one side of the MAGA crowd's mouth:  OMG CHINA RECKLESS DIDN'T TELL US HID NUMBERS WANT TO KILL US ALL?

Then out of the other side:  What's the big deal with red state governors fudging or altogether hiding the numbers?  It's not like they mean anything.
