True, but Gandalf's powers were far more focused on smoke and fire than anything else.

He had trouble with other things as shown by his difficulty opening the doors to Moria and the locking charm you mentioned.

He also knows how to use a sword. Could Dumbledore?

That was only the beginning of the fight between Gandalf and the Balrog, though.

Of course, Dumbledore could apparate whereas Gandalf had to ride a horse. And Dumbledore beat both Grindewald and Voldemort in duels, Gandalf lost to the Witch King and Saruman.

Dumbledore would destroy Gandalf. Gandalf has practically no spells compared to Dumbledore. Magic in the Harry Potter universe is just *vastly* more powerful and flexible (and easier!) than in Middle Earth.

This is an interesting question, which I will attempt to answer in the nerdiest way possible.

The magic in Harry Potter is not the same as the magic in LOTR.  For that matter, neither is the fighting.

If the magic were removed, or was only the LOTR kind, Gandalf would kick Dumbledore's ass.  Because he can actually fight with a sword and stuff.  He beat up a Balrog on his own!
But if magic of the Harry Potter kind could be used, Dumbledore could defeat Gandalf without much effort at all.

Gandalf's magic was relegated to very simple manipulations of the physical world.  He could make fireworks, and move things.  He could make a ship out of smoke. But he never used it in battle.  Wizard magic in the Harry Potter world is all about spell casting.  And they could cause some serious harm to each other.  Plus, they could teleport and shapeshift.  They have a single spell that could kill a person dead.

In the end, the problem with answering this question is that one wizard would have to be in the other wizard's world, and deal with those limitations.  Without knowing that, it's impossible to answer.

But going in the spirit of having them fight each other with the faculties of their world at their disposal, because Dumbledore has his magic, he would easily defeat Gandalf.  Because Gandalf would only have his sword.  His magic wouldn't compare.

Gandalf has magic plot power that allows him "enough" power for any situation when hobbits aren't looking.

Dumbledore has magic plot power that lets him maintain his "super powerful wizard" status, but still needs Harry to do the actual wizarding.

All the more reason to go with Gandalf, he expects to get screwed and is more likely to get his opponent drunk then slit his throat in the night.
/ or just poison him.

That being said, everyone knows Rincewind would win as long as he had the book.

Gandalf wins if he can take Dumbledore to ground. Mostly though, I think they'd sit around discussing techniques to manipulate the easily influenced that follow them.

The fight would end after the first 10min of the first episode and then we would have the best wizard buddy cop comedy show of all time.

Winner winner.

Magic use by the good guys in LotR is very subtle, less about big flashy spells unless it has to be, and more about a battle of wits and wills. Sauramon defeated Gandalf because Gandalf was shocked by his betrayal, unfocused, and fighting what was at the time a stronger will than his own.

Gandalf vs the Balrog is Gandalf going full at it fighting an equal. That fight took 10 days, with the battle at the peak alone taking two of the 10, and created what distant observers took to be a violent storm.

People who've only watched the films don't get that Gandalf is a demigod who literally has the creator of the world on his side. The actual god of the LotR universe brought back Gandalf the White to finish the work. But the point, Gandalf's job, wasn't to show up, put the whammy down and solve everyone's problems. It was to guide them to solve their own damn problems.

Gandalf had no chance against the lich king because Sauron pretty much designed that farker to kill the other demigods like Gandalf.

Dumbledore may be a magnificent wizard, but he's still just a man. I'll go with the demigod thanks.

Granny Weatherwax would wipe the floor with both Gandalf and Dumbledore using Headology.

Archchancellor Ridcully would avert the fight by inviting them to a large dinner at Unseen University.

Are you kidding me? LotR fans dress in armor and wield swords and axes. They ride horses.

Potter fans wave twigs and yell in latin. They "ride" broomsticks by sticking them between their thighs and waddling around.
