Well, thank you for your service subby.

I'm in California and got EDD a few days ago. I applied online and didn't have any problem. Not surprised that the phone service is crap, tho.

Did you try turning it off and on again, submitter?

If only they had access to people who would be interested in a part-time job of fielding calls.

It's nothing new. I had to call in for my father's EDD SDI(disability) claim months ago before shiat hit the fan. Same thing would happen. Would say maximum holding was reached and would hang up. The trick was to keep note of your number choices to the automated system so you could blast through it and try quicker without listening to everything. I remember for my need it was 3,3,1.

Don't thank Subby. He clearly didn't fix the problem when he had the chance. This is all Subby"s fault.

Well if you had read the article:
"EDD spokeswoman Loree Levy said the agency is now trying to hire 1,500 people, and redirected another 1,300 to help with claims."

They are trying to hire but unemployment from the pandemic is paying people up to $4000 a month to sit at home. A guaranteed extra $600 a week on top of the regular unemployment. They get that through July unless their place of employment opens up. Its going to be real hard to recruit for anything that pays under that for a while.

He said he dealt with them, never that he worked for them or did business with them.

Jokes on the people on unemployment, as CA's fund will run dry in a few weeks.

At that point, CA will have to borrower to fund unemployment. The fun doesn't stop there.

Could be Florida.

To be fair, anyone in their right mind would be yelling at the costs it would have been to scale unemployment in the timeframe it needed to, with the additional complexities added in.

You're forgetting, or uneducated on, what it's like to work at a call center. I worked customer service for an insurance provider for about a year, and had cancer wished on myself and my family at least once a month. No matter how genuinely nice, friendly, and helpful you try to be you'll still wind up hearing some of the most vile and hateful things coming out of peoples mouths just because you can't immediately do exactly what they want. I got less abuse in the 11 years I worked an internal IT helpdesk for 2 separate companies. Unless it was a guaranteed permanent job with excellent benefits making at least net $35K I wouldn't take it and I would tell almost anyone else to do the same. It's a thankless job that will suck the life and joy out of you and give you the most bleak outlook on humanity.

I'm not sure where you live but in a lot of parts of CA and the east coast as well (Boston, NYC) getting whatever measly fraction of your pay with an extra $600 isn't really much to live on, especially if you were low wage to start with. Housing in these areas starts around $1400 a month.

I was furloughed for a little over a week in Washington State, and I wound up getting $1390 per week, which is less than I was making but wasn't going to put us on the street. I was pleasantly surprised how fast the processed my claim online as well.

I filed online when I lost my job last December, but there was a problem, and yeah, getting a live person is near impossible. Hours were 8am to noon, and most calls went just the way the article says: you go through the phone tree, then get told they are too busy and get disconnected. Other times you get put on hold for HOURS - and this was BEFORE the pandemic
