Good list but it's missing Indiana Jones 4.

I'd argue that Gremlins 2 and Evil Dead 2 are parodies of the originals.

Also, Galaxy Quest.

The reason most of those hold up is because they aren't topical comedies. They don't rely on jokes about what's currently trendy, which means the jokes can still land no matter what year it is. Not Another Teen Movie is probably the only one on there that relied on topical humor and it was still pretty damn good before they drove that genre into the ground with all the bullshiat that followed. Plus it had Captain America in a whipped cream speedo.

I have a few quibbles here and there, but this is surprisingly close to just being a list of all my favorite movies.

Here's the list:

1. Airplane! (1980)
2. Young Frankenstein (1974)
3. Murder By Death (1976)

I don't get it. I thought Disaster Movie's ingenious parody of The Love Guru was a timeless gag that would have fans quoting decades from now.

8. Johnny Dangerously (1984)

I don't consider Johnny Dangerously a parody. It's a gangster comedy with more hits than misses, but I don't see how it sends up gangster movie cliches.

I saw a chunk of the second or third Scary Movie around 2003 and it had already-dated references to things like malfunctioning Firestone tires and Florida ballots going missing.

I guess Dr. Strangelove is more a satire of the Cold War than a parody of Cold War political thrillers. Plus maybe a little dated to the Cold War, even if the humor holds up.

Top Secret!  is a truly unheralded gem.  Not just as a parody but as a comedy in general.  Here's a great discussion on the film and the rules of comedy the Zuckers used.

That one was dated as soon as it came out given the changeover from deep penetration (giggidy) missions to ICBMs.

But I agree, it's more of a satire. Same with Team America. That's not parodying any specific media but government policy and attitude.

Don't Be a Menace deserves to be on the list

Incorrigible Astronaut: No Tropic Thunder?

Wife and I watched that just a few weeks ago (it had been a few years). Still holds up, even though the "one guy playing a bunch of people in fatsuits" is no longer a thing (thank god).

And Les Grossman is one of Tom Cruise's best roles. I wish we would've gotten a spinoff movie of him. I could listen to him scream at random people for hours.

And they did it 4 years ago. I can't off the top of my head think of a movie from the last 4 years - other than Deadpool, which is a brilliant parody of modern superhero movies - that belongs on the list, but... yeah.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was on TV the other night and was great still.  Rachel Ward's breast kept getting out of alignment though which was distracting.

The fatsuit thing was because it was a parody of Weinstein. It's such a great movie.

I've come to accept that I just don't 'get' this movie. I feel left out. I wanted to like it. I want to be in on the joke. I like the entire cast. And I LOVED Janeane, especially when this came out. I just couldn't sync with it.

The movie is averageish. The TV shows WHAS: First Day of Camp and WHAS: Ten Years Later are way better.

I can't view videos from the work computer, but if you search for it, I'm sure you'll find it.

I forget what it was for, but there is a short of Les Grossman on the set of Risky Business screaming at Tom Cruise to do the "Old Time Rock 'n Roll" scene in his underwear. Very well done.

mjbok: Incorrigible Astronaut: No Tropic Thunder?

Not a parody.

I do think maybe that it's more a satire of Hollywood/Satirical retelling of the making of Apocalypse Now than anything else. Definitely can't call it a straight parody of an action or war movie.

bhcompy: Don't Be a Menace deserves to be on the list

While I find opportunities to quote that movie regularly, it doesn't hold up for younger viewers. A (small) part of the parody is having seen the other movies that they parody. I watched it with some high-school age kids, and they didn't get probably 25% of the jokes. It is a parody not just of those movies, but of "West Coast Gangster culture." That culture was at its peak with the upswell of west coast rap and related cultural touchpoints. It is now almost completely out of the popular world.

"Do...We...Have...A...Problem" still worked for the kids, sort of. "Hurry up and buy" and the rest of the Korean grocery scene of course made no sense, as it is a direct parody of Menace. Same with having a ton of beepers and calling each other from feet away, and plenty of other jokes. Crazy Legs was a direct parody of the wheelchair bound character, etc, etc.

I love the movie, and am not putting it down, but it does not deserve to be on the list, unfortunately.

I also dont think Team America holds up well AT ALL. But I didnt think it was that great originally. Had a few high points, but overall not great.

And WHAS was absolutely not funny when it came out, and when I tried to watch it again a couple[?] years ago when it was on Netflix. couldn't make it 15 minutes. Crap movie. But it allows me to guess the age of the authors that it was included.

Yeah, not necessarily cliches; it made fun of a lot of things that have been used only once
