You
Don't
Say?!

I'm sure it's just coincidence.  Margin of error, extra-late reporting, found some lost records, inflated numbers, just got a new batch of tests and are testing people who needed them like, two weeks ago, it was an intern's fault, shoulda stuck to fetching coffee...

Maddow showed a graph last night of new cases in the U.S. but excluding NY/NJ/CT

Even with some states fudging their numbers, it was pretty much a 45 degree up-slope.

Not surprising at all.  Two weeks ago, when Captain Pike announced the reopening, I was hoping that the numbers wouldn't go up but I was still skeptical.  Any hope I had was steadily dashed over the last two weeks as I watched the how the "no mask" people behaved.

It's the Republican way.
Don't get what you want? Blame the Democrats!
Get what you want and it backfires just like every sane person on the planet was telling you it would?  Blame the Democrats!
But whatever you do, never, ever, ever self reflect on what really went wrong and why.

Yes.

Will we? That mostly depends on the news-entertainment industry's willingness to give air time to the discussion.

Is this beyond the expected increase due to the increased testing though?

Florida has been "partially" reopen since May 4th. I say "partially" because the restaurants around here didn't give a f*ck about "25% capacity" and threw their doors open. The restaurants have been packed. Now is about the time we start seeing the repercussions of that.
My hygienist's daughter is a nurse at one of the local hospitals. They closed their COVID unit for a whole two days before needing to reopen it. Good times.

Things that don't lie:

1.  The proliferation of a newspaper's obituary section
2.  Mass graves
3.  Public health officials that aren't held at gunpoint by Trump

This is going to happen in Wisconsin soon, and probably Illinois, because they are going over the border to booze it up. I really like my governor Evers, but having a republican controlled legislature sure makes him look bad. Full blue states I envy you.

the DC metro area too. MD started reopening last week and today is a record high for daily infections. after a week of 800ish per day we have had 1800+ in the last 24h.

There was no reason to think the numbers would go up, the question is whether hospital capacity has been or is likely to be exceeded. I don't think we ever planned to be locked down long enough for no one else to get the disease, because it's going to be way too long before we get a vaccine. AFAIK no one was ever planning to be locked down that long.

Which does not mean that anyone should start having big gatherings again, but sensible reopenings really could be in order in some places and under some circumstances.

A couple of states have already decreased the # of C19 deaths because of over counting, more are to follow.  AZ was up a little, but only because of a 'medical blitz' where a ton of testing was done.  The % of positives to those tested actually went down.

Let's check in with each other 2 1/2 weeks after Memorial Day- We can sit and commiserate the foolishness of the new numbers, and lament as to why it never NEEDED to happen.

That weekend is gonna make things VERY nasty in the near future

You can't blame this on the re-opening. There's a longer lag than a week. This was already going up and up, and they re-opened anywhere. Prepare for the curve to get even steeper in 1-2wks as the effects of the opening, ahem, go viral.

I'm sure the Governors of North Carolina and Arizona, just like Texas Governor Gregg Abbott did when he got caught on a hot mic admitting as much, that they knew this is exactly what would happen.

And if you think that's bad, for years they have considered your children acceptable losses for their NRA donations.

Since re-lockdown is off the menu, we'll see:

1) What the potential for exponential expansion may be.
2) Whether this is really an urban/blackfolk disease

For numba 1, we've not seen another other nation, much large a massive one, decide to just throw doors open carefree and do nothing. For numba 2, taking out the explosion in New York, it's actually killed mostly white folk and Asian folks.

Other words: Good luck!

Pure graph angle doesn't matter because it can be skewed by the proportion of the X and Y scales. We need to look at the growth rates or do comparative analysis of the rates compared to those of other areas, or the same area and other points in time.

Better yet, make the Y scale logarithmic and see what the derivative is - the rate of change is more telling as to the efficacy of our mitigation measures.

That's all out the window if we get a sudden increase when the "reopen" wave starts to hit.

Actually, that was Georgia. Florida is the one that fired the person in charge of their Covid data collection because the numbers were accurate and DeSantis didn't want people to get accurate numbers. But I totally get how you could confuse the two.
