Amazing, they managed to write that whole article without saying what kind of con it was. The tweet at the very bottom hinted it was some kind of gaming con, but that was it.

Holy crap

This doesn't look good for DragonCon. They probably need to cancel meeting space, inferstructure etc.
And I bet the guest list is backing out too. Sad because for some of the vendors it's their biggest day of the year...some just have boxes of comics and swag they pull out of the garage for cons.

Next, Trump will attempt forcing conventions to continue

It's a GEN Con, duh. I mean, it's right there in the name of the thing.

Somebody let him know about the furry cons that don't want to reopen.

Yes, because we all know what the Lake Geneva Wargames Convention means on the tin.

(My poor sister; she is one of the workers at their central command; the one who dresses up as a Sith.  I will have to go buy her some Pepsi and Vodka today.)

Dude, you can't call them that anymore.   The proper term is "tyransvestite".

And with that cancellation, Indianapolis's total deodorant sales and bath water use will be no different than if GenCon went on as scheduled.

I'm just going to assume it's for genders. It used to be about male and female for decades but now the field is wide open so to speak.

Yes, but the food trucks are going to be bankrupted.

Here's how I break them down:

Gencon - Large gaming convention centered around boardgames and RPG's.
Dragoncon - Party convention centered around anything fantastical.

I'm a comic book con person rather than a gaming con person but the strip club I spend time at actually sends dancers to nerd cons and events in Chicago and Indiana. A sizable minority of the dancers are giant nerds and the competition to be one of the five or six dancers who go is actually kind of intense.  They do wear event-appropriate cosplay. I'm not sure if they go all the way to Gen Con but I know they do at least six shows between Rosemont and South Bend. They hand out free passes and swag to people while they're there, and I know a lot of other performance venues (e.g. Burlesque shows) do the same thing.

Literally the first time I walked in to my local Deja Vu, a dancer was sitting at one of the front tables reading a hardcover Dragonlance novel. I've played Magic the Gathering and Last Night On Earth at the club with on-duty dancers.

Anyway, a lot of dancers are nerds and it's entirely possible that the Indy strippers ain't making money that weekend because they're already planning to be at the con.

Convention for board games and roleplaying games (like Dungeons and Dragons).

This saddens me. This will be the first one I've missed since they've been in Indy and my son has been going with me since 2012.
Several years back, I saw Gary Gygax, walked up to him and shook his hand, thanking him for the enormous positive influence his creation had had on my life. That was the year before he died.

/no, he didn't roll and say, "It's a ... pleasure to meet you!"

likefunbutnot: Anyway, a lot of dancers are nerds

Yeah, no. I imagine a few are. Somewhat. The basic fact that a dancer is typically attractive, and bold enough to show her goods off for money, precludes most aspects of "nerd".

That said, I was making jokings. You're aptly named.

Hoping that things are calm enougvh by October that the Memphis Comic Expo can go on. It's the only show I attend since it is almost completely comic oriented. The guest list this year looks really fun and I've come to know several of the regular attendees. Getting to miss out on that Saturday would be a real shame.

No doubt others in their respective cities who have lost their events are going to miss the pleasure of geeking out with their fellow attendees.

2020-05-19 4:41:37 PM
I always run a few events at Gencon and Im pretty bummed because Ive spent a lot of time preparing one of them. But there is always next year assuming were not all dead of the rona by then.

2020-05-19 4:46:30 PM
Why is anyone acting surprised? No cons are going to be happening this year. No concerts either. Any group acting like they can reschedule to later this year is lying to you and to themselves.

2020-05-19 4:57:44 PM
While expected, and the right thing, I'm very disappointed. I had gotten a room at the JW through the lottery this year. I'm local, but like staying downtown and making a vacation out of it.

What events do you run?

Shryke: Yeah, no. I imagine a few are.

You are underestimating substantially.
If you think about it, the Millennial-and-younger set grew up on Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Marvel movies. They played Pokemon games and watched Batman cartoons and to the extent that they visited big box bookstores, those bookstores had Manga sections. Go in to a strip club sometime when it isn't terribly busy and I'll bet you a lap dance you can find somebody in a thong who'd be happy to talk about Doctor Who for 20 minutes.

I don't know why you'd be surprised so many of them wound up nerdy, nor do I believe that their status as attractive humans precludes their interest in something like Gen Con. Being a nerd has nothing to do with looks or gender.

2020-05-19 5:08:02 PM
And now my second big trip of the year is a casualty of Covid19. Was looking forward to Gencon this year, was supposed to have been in Prague last month to fence Sabre. Alas, now all I've got is some shiatty travel vouchers to show for it.

That said, if it's the worst that happens to me as a result of this, I guess I can't complain.

Gencon is a ton of fun and one of the best organized cons out there (especially relative to something like SDCC...did that about 15 times before calling it quits even as a local, Gencon I didn't mind flying across the country for).

Fixed that for the 80's/90's decades.  Good luck finding a female at Gencon then.

DEF CON as well (which is, as a bit of a joke/meme, "cancelled" every year).  Looks like they're going to try to do an online con though, which could be amazing.

I normally skip the contests and games in favor of socializing, but if that's not an option...

I met him at one of the Milwaukee GenCons in the late 90s, right after WotC bought TSR.  I knew he had a reputation as a bit of an asshole, but the 3-4 minutes I chatted with him were rather pleasant - likely because we spent the time discussing Avalon Hill games.

Don't get me wrong, I'd genuinely have wanted to try to go this year since I live relatively closer and we've both developed a healthy tabletop/boardgaming habit but it's not happening. Hell, I may have to set myself up for a fight later since Awesome con wants to act like they'll be able to run in December.

/TMBG Flood 30th anniversary concert is going to have to be 31st or maybe even 32nd at this rate

Origins is rescheduled for October and there is a virtual Con on the original date in June. Should be interesting

Not surprising, unfortunately. I'm definitely glad I went last year though.

I wonder how this will change the game companies release schedules?

Gencon... one of the local catholic parishes sends their trainee priests to bless dice for gamers as an outreach.  Not certain if I ever ran into strippers there, something about not being something one asks, but, hey, I did run into the priests more than once.  And the biker bronies who do NOT appreciate anyone interfering with their granddaughters' games... who show up with a lot of biker friends who are Very Amused by the whole shebang.

Not to mention a big fellow who I could have sworn I saw in a HBO series GMing a RP game.  And I think he put on a goofy mask to go down to the live action dungeon.

The last five years alone the attendance was over 60,000/yr, with last year crossing 70,000.

I know it's fun to knock nerd stuff but it's a pretty substantial draw.
