I read the comments from the CVFC's Facebook page and... they're overwhelmingly positive. Sad this has to happen but it is the right choice and I'm really glad that the community is supportive of this decision. This will be the first year we don't take our annual family vacation to the island. Upsetting but necessary. I'm really gonna miss getting my hands dirty cracking crabs at Steamers and riding bikes on the Assateague trails. I was hoping to at least be able to order some Pony Tails salt water taffy from their website but they're closed until further notice.

I was there last year, but for work.  It was so nice to see the ocean and real trees again after so many years in Colorado.

It is a great place to visit, especially off season. Took Mrs Alt there for her first trip a few years ago. Been going since I was about 7. Crabs, crabs and more crabs.

Assateague? *reads Boobies*Yep. I remember camping there when I was a teenager. I believe it would have been on the MD side but It was the 70's so I was stoned. I'm afraid to rtfa or look it up. I prefer to remember it as it was, instead of seeing what it may have become.

I'm from Maryland and I thought they were wild animals? Do they just make a show of their migration or is it a forced crossing of the water? I took a wild pony cruise once but I don't remember any details about the fest and it was Maryland, not Virginia.

/The volunteer fire department on Tighlman has a crab fest twice a year for fundraising
//hot tip
///hope thats not cancelled

I'm always down for a VFD fundraising meal. Holding a catfish fry is great draw and BBQ is a great second.

I was counting on this to get my yearly fix of pony Parmesan.   Free range pony is so much better than veal.

Technically they are wild animals. They've become very acclimated to people though. I've not spent a lot of time on Chincoteague but on Assateague Island, you're not supposed to interact with the ponies at all. Kind of difficult to do when you're sitting on the beach and one walks up behind you and pokes its muzzle into your back, looking for something to eat.

The migration itself is pretty much a show. Folks on horses herd the ponies out of the trees and guide them down to the water. Then they follow boats across the channel. It's quite a sight to see a hundred ponies splashing about.

Here is a pretty good, short video:

My family has been going to Assateague since before I was born (I was -2 weeks old my first trip and I will be 50 next month) we used to meet up with other big families we saw that once a year. Now we all have families on my own and we're still going. No place makes me feel more restful or at home than that beach.  However, none of us are even thinking about going this year.  None of us hate our families or each other that much

Plenty of ponies on the Shackleford Banks (NC) as well.
Used to fly CAP missions to count them. The ponies get their shots every year, and wormed by the ex-Bankers.
The stories of the removal of the Bankers from their homes on the islands are sad.
Visit the Core Banks museum on Harkers Island.
