I am also going to go out on a limb here;   US intelligence informed #45 as soon as the infection started.  The President did nothing.  He is 100% to blame for the severity of the response and flaming right wing morons and anti-government types despite the fact that he is in fact responsible and is the face of the government.

I live in a red Middle America state and was a (socially distant) out side birthday party for a 9 year old. The dads were all standing in a giant circle, about 5 or 6 feet from each other. When the conversation finally got to politics, I heard more than one dad say "I can't vote for Biden, but I can't vote for Trump either". I am not one for supporting "not voting" but in this case it is the best your going to get if normal GOP voters stay home

When I get a sinus infection, I get a bad smell with no external source, and a bitter taste in my mouth.  The first time it happened, I wondered if something had crawled up my nose and died there.

I seem to get them about once a year lately.

The WHO repeated China's assertion that there was no evidence of human to human transmission in mid January.

Tedros should be sacked for that alone.  On wonders if there are suitcases of cash from China behind that.

I've been behind on reading The Economist, and it's instructive to go back to early January and see all the information that fat fark had from China, WHO, and his own people that far back and he STILL treated it as a nothingburger.

I'm sorry, but that sack of shiat cannot use the "nobody knew" excuse. He was beaten over his headferret with it, and willfully ignored it.

That was in mid-January. Nobody else knew anything about it except the doctors in China. There is no reason to think they were deliberately lying.

If only there had been another pandemic response team in China, perhaps from a large wealthy nation, that could have independently assessed those claims and determined their veracity.

Too bad Trump had fired all our responders in China, so we had to wait till the epidemic hit America.

The Chinese government has relentlessly suppressed information, I'm skeptical if how much access more people in China would have had, especially given the snow job they did on independent observers.

If you trust anything the Chinese government says or does, you are a fool...

What information was WHO allowed to go in to make a determination?

Oh. That's right... They have no authority to do things like that, and have to depend on member nations.

What WHO did *NOT* say was "there is evidence that it cannot do human-to-human transmission." Which was all they could do.

Subtle difference, but important in science.

And your evidence of this is...

For that matter, what's your evidence of US's biosafety management? It took the CDC 3-1/2 years to talk about a fairly large breach.

Don't assume that China is somehow slapdash with biocontainment and the US is somehow better and more transparent about it.

They punished doctors who tried to speak out and lied to their own people and the world.

They shut down the lab that release the virus sequence information.

They continued to insist there was no evidence of human to human transmission long after they knew it was a lie, many weeks later.

They had their ambassador to the U.S. post an editorial full of lies, where they now claim that the CCP released the viral genome sequence and that the doctor they punished was a CCP hero acting under CCP orders.

This virus evolved in bats...

Then it infected a new animal, and when it spread in the new species (pangolins maybe) it mutated.

THEN it got into the human population.

Unless the researchers in the Chinese lab was collecting viruses from the pangolin population to see if any of them happened to come from bats originally, then the Wuhan biolab probably didn't have this one.

Oh ok.  Post the evidence then.  I mean, it would be stupid to base such a huge claim without any hard evidence, so you must be 100% to make such a claim and belittle people who question it.

Are you posting here to whitewash China's record on this???

Are you posting here to whitewash Trump's record on this by childishly attempting to shift blame (for a global pandemic - who's the blame for the 'flu every year?) to anybody else?

They punished doctors who tried to speak out and lied to their own people and the world.

Punishment of dissidents, while abhorrent, is something the Chinese have always done.  I don't dispute that they lied to their own people.  However, I take issue with the claim that they lied to the world.  That presupposes that they were able to determine a huge amount of data on the virus at a rate faster than anybody else did or could when they became able to do so.  Is your argument then that the Chinese were super-efficient, plotted out how this could impact the world and then made a conscious malignant decision to do just that?

My counter to that would be why is that more realistic than they were caught on the hop by it, that local authorities attempted to gag doctors for purely personal political reasons (you don't progress in the Party if your region is full of dead people for example, or you're implicated in a health issue) and it was only when the scale of the problem became known to the Party leadership did news start to come out.  See, your supposition allows no time lapse for information to flow from very localised sources, tightly controlled by local authorities, to the highest levels of the CCP and for them to then formulate a plan to destabilise the entire planetary economy, including their own, for what exactly?  I suppose it's possible that it was revenge for Trump's ridiculous, unwinnable and crippling trade war, but the itself presupposes a level of immaturity and pettiness that are not observable traits of the CCP.

They shut down the lab that release the virus sequence information.

After it released key information?  What MONSTERS!  You must know of some very noble work that lab was destined for, or you have proof of some nefarious reasoning behind the closure.  Please provide your citation.

They continued to insist there was no evidence of human to human transmission long after they knew it was a lie, many weeks later.

When did they find out?  You must have some proof to accuse them of lying, so please provide that.

They had their ambassador to the U.S. post an editorial full of lies, where they now claim that the CCP released the viral genome sequence and that the doctor they punished was a CCP hero acting under CCP orders.

Again, citations needed.  This is quite a common request, I'm really surprised that you haven't provided any citations.  (Ha, not really!).

No, I'm here to point out that for the past 30 years, we had teams in China to independently check both WHO and Chinese reports of epidemics; that was how we were ahead of SARS, MERS, and H1N1 among other things, without having to blame either WHO or China for our lackluster response. We had our own people checking up, and as a result, it didn't matter if WHO was "ignoring" reports or not.

Now suddenly, after Trump pulls our response team, we discover both WHO and China can't be relied on; but somehow that's not Trump's fault? Why is it that he cannot be blamed for doing things that get him into trouble? And why is it that people who constantly bleat about "personal responsibility" can't seem to take any when it's time to do so?

Trump dropped the ball hard on this. He should own it and move on to step two.

This statement truly shows your understandable ignorance.  You think it means that if you screw up, you personally take responsibility for your actions.  That is flat wrong.

What it really means is if there is a screw up, you find a raging liberal that is personally responsible for the current situation.  All that is know is that it can't be a true conservative because if they are one's personally responsible, its pretty obvious they were only deep state RINO there to make the movement look bad.

True, but both are still failings of Obama according to Trump. Early on in the pandemic, Trump derided the poort response of the H1N1 virus and however many people died then.  Today, we know that Obama set up the Trump admin for failure by depleting everything and keeping Trump too busy to notice for 3 years.

At the end of day we can surely all rest easy know that know matter what we know its not Trump's fault.
