Good. It's a start, but it is usually awesome when there is positive news about vaccines. There is still work to be done but this is a big step towards having the coveted vaccine.

Is that an American company?

This worries me.  If it an America company, how much will the vaccine cost (in a Dotard admin?)  Also, if it is not an American company would Dotard even allow the vaccine in America or would he insist on an American company being the one to produce it?

Answer to one is we don't know. Answer to two is yes. He can't win re-election without it. Until a vaccine is deployed we won't be back full normal.

He would probably try to make it so Americans get it first (which is understandable) but then try to extort other countries before we share it with them.

Also, we won't be back full normal until that orange goblin lies stinking in the Earth.

Looks like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has a "non exclusive license" for the thing.  They've probably already producing it and expect to distribute it sans profit (of course, they are paying $100 million for testing, so they might not just give it away).

Probably gonna sell it for 10 000$ a dose/insurance companies are gonna pay them that and we'll all get a 200% raise in health care premiums in 2021.

Any way you cut it, we'll get screwed no matter what.

Unless a self less employee at Moderna leaks all the data to the world for free and gets his life destroyed because of it.

IMO this is the expected outcome at this stage, and nothing to be too excited about yet. It will take time to find out whether the antibody response is going to be protective, and take a bigger/longer study to evaluate side effects.

Gee, is there something injectable that we can use to try to stop this?

So I've grown to distrust pharma companies, publishing before all neutralizing antibody tests come in seems awfully convenient, either they're "rechecking" negative results or someone had a reason to goose the stock a few days early. 18% neutralizing antibodies is better than nothing, but it would be a lot better if it were 80+%.

HIV+ people develop antibodies to fight HIV too.   In fact, the presence of those antibodies is usually the first indicator that someone is HIV+.       But having antibodies, alone, doesn't automatically mean that patient can now defeat the virus.

Don't get your hopes up folks.  It's far too soon for anything like this being of any use to anyone.  Barring conspiracy theories about this being an engineered virus, which is unlikely to the point of impossibility, there is no vaccine waiting in the wings nor is there likely to be at any point in the next two years at the earliest.  Miracle cures are utter b.s. just hunker down and wait it out.

Antibodies or nanobots?

2020-05-18 12:35:46 PM
Not just to be a downer but getting a vaccine to produce antibodies is the easy part.
There are attempts at HIV vaccines that readily produce antibodies.

Now the good news here is that the antibodies are targeted to a key protein that may block the virus's ability to infect new cells. And it seems to work to do exactly that in the lab. But we'll have to be cautious about whether it does it well enough in people to arrest the spread of infection.

Side effects include grade 3 systemic symptoms. WTF is that? Google doesn't know either. Could an expert please explain what "grade 3 systemic symptoms" are? Are we talking about a mild fever and possibly a rash around the injection site or are we talking about symptoms that are as bad or worse than Covid-19 itself?

If there's one thing i've learned on Fark it's that correlation does not == causation. Therefore it could have been a number of things that created these antibodies, not the vaccine. Also, having antibodies might have caused these people to take the vaccine, rather than the other way around.

Also, this is a tiny study therefore it means absolutely nothing (Farkers remind us of this any time there is a small study they don't agree with).

Fark never disappoints. Potential good news that could save hundreds of thousands of lives, But they are worried it might gain Trump a few votes.  Can't all these people who are dying understand they are giving their lives  for the great good.

I'm sure we'll here about when Donald told the scientists how to come up with the cure. He told them about it before the virus left China, I'm not sure why it took them so long to make it.

No one is worried about the "votes", they're worried that he'll screw with it or demand to make a personal fortune on it.  Wouldn't be the first time he's done it.

Notice that nowhere in the post is there anything about the election, votes, polling, public support, etc.

RNA vaccines have a very, very short shelf life (hours to days), and none have yet been approved for use in humans. Hopefully this is a first in the field to be deployed (without zombifying the recipients), and hopefully they can figure out a distribution plan/method that allows folks to receive this in a wide geographic area.

So you are hoping for more dead bodies because someone somewhere might think Donnie Trump or his moron son-in-law invented it!   Did you know that wishing against a credible vaccine makes you one of the worst people on Earth?   Don't worry, if a vaccine is developed, it won't be  in wide release until after the election.

First off, why is Fark where you're learning basic logic?

Second, if 45 people are developing antibodies in a 45 person study, and a control group in the general population you examine shows no one with antibodies, there's a high statistical likelihood that the vaccine is inducing it.  General population isn't showing antibodies spontaneously, so...

And finally, as far as we know this is a good study done in a reproducible way from a reputable firm.  The smallness of the study isn't a concern unless they are advocating for mass distribution tomorrow, which they're not.  They're basically saying "we've got a candidate here".
