I've made them before. You really don't need 'lard'. In fact most Tortillas you get..even from the Mexican mart.. have lighter/cheaper non pig based fat in them.

The quality of my diet has gone way up under quarantine. Tonight, it's sauteed shrimp and zucchini over the most scandalous green, arugula, and risotto, with hot buttered toast from a loaf of bread I baked a couple of days ago.

My mom's tortillas are awesome. Using anything but lard is sacrilege and will get you slapped. She'd kick your ass for even proposing such an idea.

Olive oil tortillas will only end in tears. I blame Rachel Ray.

Damn that looks good. We're not eating quite so healthy.

The missus makes small hard rolls (I call em baseball rolls) that we occasionally don't finish. I took 3 of them, cubed 'em, and made bread pudding. 5 jumbo eggs, cinnamon, 1/4 cup brown sugar and a tbsp amaretto. 9 x 9 pan, 400 for ~30ish minutes.

You also don't need a tortilla press for flour tortillas. A rolling pin will work fine.

I use vegetable shortening, and they come out great.

Yeah, me too. I have rendered beef fat and bacon grease, but no lard in the house.  Sometimes you gotta work with what you got.

The lard never caused the pig any trouble.

If you're not using lard it's just any flatbread and you don't need a press to make them

Peak 2020?

I didn't see anything saying they were sourdough tortillas.

And then there's a question of what fillings would be most appropriate.  Topped with a sprinklng of green onions that you re-grew from the base, obviously, but what else?

Nothing beats a homemade flour tortilla.

But they can be a bit of a pain to make.  So I use these:

They aren't quite as good but they're a fraction of the effort, and they're way better than the pre-cooked ones in the store.

Made some a few weeks with Crisco. Tasted just fine. I'm sure lard would be great too but didn't have any on hand. I don't usually use Crisco but butter was one of those "I don't know if this is gonna be scarce" things, so I grabbed some just in case.

Hmmm, haven't tried tortillas yet.  Been making pita regularly, though.

Back in my fraternity days one of our new brothers was (still is) mexican. Our eating habits werent great, plenty of top ramen and box mac and cheese and rice with a little meat thrown in.
Nacho showed us how to make flour tortillas from flour, water, salt, and butter, we'd make up a large batch of dough balls, freeze them and bring a few out each day and roll them fresh. Add a bit of butter and sugar when hot, they were delightful and cheap and delicious. He also showed us how to make asada, carnitas, machaca, pinto beans, and other mexican goodies, all of it way better than the typical college diet. Bless you nacho wherever you are today!

That was great.  I make tacos like that all the time but hold off on the homemade flour torts.  My dad used to make them all the time so I guess it may be time for me to get into it.

But the tortilla press is fun dammit!
/two pans work well as a makeshift press if you don't wanna spend any dollars on one.

I can't even imagine trying to use a tortilla press to make flour tortillas.
