middlewaytao: Psychopompous: Here's my nightmare scenario: Trump and the Republican establishment keep pushing the "Polls and election results are fake news unless they skew red" mantra on their followers, right up to election day. Trump has no choice in the matter. He is a malignant narcissist who lacks the capability of self doubt. Trump loses massively in the popular vote, but the electoral college count is very close, and there are states requiring a recount, electronic voting boxes with faulty readings, and so on. Trump rants about election fraud on twitter, uses phrases like "boogaloo" and relevant QAnon code words, because the Twitterverse is Trumps world now. There are plenty of right wing nut jobs out there in the boonies who have been hoarding guns and ammo for decades for just such an occasion. The misconception I tend to hear from Liberals is that such an uprising would be a simple matter of sending in the Army, or drone strikes. How simple was it to put down an insurrection in Afghanistan?

There are not enough people to do any real damage, most of them who would be willing to pop off are already protesting and identified.

This is the complacent attitude that scares me most. Paintball games have indoctrinated people into thinking war is an activity in which both sides know when and where the battle is going to start. I recommend Che Guavera's "Guerrila Warfare", and John Nagl's "Learning to Eat Soup with a Knofe" The very last stage of an insurgency is the part where your armed supporters make public displays of force. There is a long phase of arson, sabotage, assassination of small town officials, planting of IEDs, and random mass shootings before you to the phase where insurgents start publicly parading around in regalia. Here is another nightmare. Asymptomatic carriers of Covid-19 exist. What if a Flu Klux Klan person realizes that they have become an asymptomatic carrier, and decides to spread the disease to all the Libruls he can? I can also see Anti Vaxxer asymptomatic carriers deciding to intentionally spread the disease as a way of promoting herd immunity. All such activity would benefit an insurgency by sowing distrust, disorder, and disruption. Remember, the population of the cities is larger than the rural areas, but the rural areas have the cities surrounded and all of the food comes from the rural areas. Cut a few supply lines and the cities starve. The rural folks can at least pretend to be able to fall back on gardening, fishing and hunting if the supply lines get cut.

This

For all the ideals any country has it all boils down to who's willing to fight for their world view more.

One 1/3 will fight for American values, 1/3 will fight against Americans values and 1/3 will stay home.

President Lysol's base is and always will be 1/3
The revolutionary war was won by 1/3 of  colonialists.

Pick a side

Difficulty: the cable TV still works.

You're not wrong.

1/3 is motivated to protest with guns, 1/3 likes rights for minorities women but generally have decent employment and really can't be bothered, and 1/3 won't even have a disruption in their broadcasting.

Tomoko: What will happen if Twitter just bans him the day he leaves office so he can't Tweet anymore.

Never happen.  He's violated their rules ten-thousand times without any action.  Plus, it would have to happen when the election is called to be of any use.

2020-05-15 1:24:36 PM

ElwoodCuse: A far more likely scenario you should worry about is the large number of mail-in votes making it impossible to declare a winner on election night at all

He'll declare victory election night, then the mail ballots will come in and he'll claim voter fraud and try to get them thrown out

Harlee: gunga galunga: Would Fox News as a company be on board with it? I don't know about that. Sure, the most sycophantic of the Trumphumpers may be screaming "coup", like Client #3, Frau Ingraham, and Judge Lush, but I kinda suspect that Rupert Murdoch is tired of his network being a cheerleader to a pathetic moron and would be glad to switch the narrative to focusing on how Joe Biden is an even worse President that Obama.

Lush Rimbaugh would be good with a Biden presidency. I used to listen to him. He has explicitly said many times that Democrats in control mean better ratings and ad revenues for right wing talk radio personalities.

He'll be dead soon

I've given this a lot of thought.  Our armed forces and reserves are full of white nationalists, getting training to stab their nation in the back when the opportunity presents itself.  Die Hard 2 is not a total fantasy and I fear for the "replacement comms guys" who get double taps when the shiat hits the fan, before the bastards are taken down.  As for those who are already trained and out, or never in and think they are trained, let them get mowed down and hope the collateral damage isn't too great.  Hell, half the police forces in America have body armor and MRAPS these days.

He who has the most guns, and the greatest willingness to use them, wins.

The sad truth is that the right-wingers have the most guns, AND are frothing to use them. Sure, some liberals may have guns, but they're not the ones with the huge arsenals, and spending EVERY weekend shooting on the range. They're not the ones with the ready-made militias comprised of like-minded neighbors who have turned their guns into a culture.

America is swirling down the tubes. I predict a LOT of violence as we near the election, and even more if Trump loses, and starts demanding recounts. We're not getting out of this anytime soon, and not without blood running in the streets.

C'mon, cut them some slack - it's not like they're not trying - "Bursima" went nowhere, and their new "Obamagate" isn't gaining traction.   "Shillary" is the only thing they had that ever worked.

He also can't fire someone for investigating him. Or ignore subpoenas. Or personally profit from his office. Or intimidate witnesses.

He has yet to take over any state's operations, which is where the election sits. I take it your state is going to give up their own power?

Plenty of GOP led states are opening up their economies and risking their citizen's lives against scientific advice because it makes Trump happy.

Yeah, just imagine.  He could get somebody from MI6 who hates Biden to write up a bogus Dossier that he's in collusion with say China.

Get the FBI involved to investigate.   Leak it all to the press and have several high ranking members of his administration go on tv and repeatedly tell us any day now the smoking gun is coming out. Maybe get a special council involved.

The whole world could believe Biden is an actual Chinese agent.  Even if Biden wins the election, the fallout would make things extremely difficult for him.

But surely stuff like that can't happen in America.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Mueller Report was often Trump would try to get people to do things like fire Mueller (some of those obstruction of justice things u guys always talk about)

Only to repeatedly be told fark off I'm not doing that. Read the news lately?  The guy can't pass gas without a staffer leaking it to the press.

And if it isn't leaked, it slips out in his continuous stream of consciousness twitter feed.

There has never been a US president LESS capable of circumventing an election than Donald Trump.

COMALite J:Two corrections:

If the election does not happen and events play out as described, is there a mechanism for holding an election sooner than November 2024, or would the US government continue on for four years with an acting president? Would it also be six years with a third of Senate seats empty (November 2026) and two years with no House (November 2022)?

Would it also be six years with a third of Senate seats empty (November 2026) and two years with no House (November 2022)?

It's never happened, but since "shall act as President" is the terminology used, it stands to reason that the person would only be effectively keeping the seat warm until a valid election could be held. Election Day is set in an 1845 statute passed by the 28th Congress, not in the Constitution, so it could be temporarily or permanently changed by an Act of Congress ― only there'd be no Congress without a House.

We do know that vacancies in the Senate can be filled by the States (some by special elections, other by Gubernatorial appointment, and presumably state legislatures could also get a say if they so choose to alter how their state does it ― prior to the 17th Amendment, it was expected for all States to appoint their Senators, just as they were supposed to appoint their Electors to the Electoral College), and that the Constitution requires equal suffrage of the States in the Senate (not even a Constitutional Amendment can alter that ― it's the one and only remaining restriction on what even a Constitutional Amendment could do), so the Senate may not remain so small nor in Democratic hands, though presumably the President pro tempore who holds the office on January 20 would become Acting President. With no House, there could be no new or acting Vice President, since while the President (and presumably Acting President) can appoint a new Vice President, unlike any other Presidential nominee, both the House and the Senate have to approve (see Ford replacing Agnew).

Vacancies in the House can be filled by special election, so the States could hold special elections to start filling the House back up. This would take time, though, and would be unlikely to be done enough to have a quorum in the time between January 3 and January 20, so there'd still be no Speaker since a quorum of the House has to elect a new Speaker, or to vote on legislation.

One possible solution would be to have the States appoint Electors without electing them (the way it was originally done, and no Constitutional Amendment has changed this ― basically the political parties imposed the system we currently have and have had for the past century or so and think is the normal) and, once the House has been rebuilt through special election enough to have a quorum and pass election authorizing a special Electoral College election day, elect a new President and Vice President. Whoever that is would be fully President, #46. But his or her term would only last until the next Inauguration Day, though, if there were less than two years remaining in what would've been the then-current, s/he could run again for up to two more terms.

We can look back to 2016 to figure out what he will do if he loses. Trump anticipated losing the election then, so he had an army of lawyers ready to go in each state that he might have lost. They would have filed a blizzard of meritless challenges to the results. These would have worked their way through the courts and been thrown out. In the end, Trump still would have lost.

Images of Trump barricading himself in the Oval Office before being perp-walked out by the Secret Service are just fan fiction. It's not going to happen.

Hold on now. I have it on good authority from no less than Mitch McConnell that former Presidents should keep their mouths shut about administrations after theirs. Although in the very next sentence he did admit he doesn't see Trump ever doing that.

Honestly the back to back hypocrisy whiplash is insane to see at times.
