Yes it's Thursday. I always submit a little early because even with stay-at-home my schedule is a mess. *sigh*

I had to choose GOG's free games as the link because the Epic site is getting hit so hard that I literally couldn't link it. The Fark server was throwing away the URL because it couldn't reach it.

Oh, FFS.  I literally just bought GTA V (not the online version, fark that) yesterday off the Green Man Gaming 10th anniversary sale.  Okay, I only paid around C$12, but it wasn't a Steam activation or anything, it was farking Rockstar's own social club activation which needs their own stupid launcher.  Gah.

Oh well.  I got Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Deluxe off the GMG sale earlier this week (UPlay activation unfortunately, but whatever) for under C$25 so I can't complain too much.

Glad i'm not the only one getting errors on Epic.  Was hoping to play GTA V today, but I guess I can wait another day or two.

For beat-em-ups, I was never much of a fan.  That being said, I dusted off the old wii and hooked it up the other day after re-discovering it in a box in the basement.  My daughter and I have been going through the Super Smash Brother's Brawl campaign, which is a lot of fun.

Time to finally play GTA Online with all the flood of newbs, I won't stand out so much!
Ace Combat 7 all week.
Simpsons and Xmen arcades immediately come to mind. Final Fight was the SNES staple, Battletoads, Double Dragon, Golden Axe... does King of Monsters count?

Consider the amount of petabytes trying to fly out of their servers right now at over 60-80 gigs a pop?
I forget how much the install is, but it is pretty big.

Hahahaha. I thought it was just me. My gaming notebook died last night* with Satisfactory running so I thought I had corruption when the launcher was bugging out this morning.

*I accidently unplugged it and even though "check the simple issues first" is my personal troubleshooting mantra, I neglected to notice while trying to get a boot and being presented with a variety of BIOS and OS error screens.

The catch is that you'd have to install the Epic launcher, which has had credible accusations of being Chinese Beijing spyware.

Oh, and the fact that their website is overloaded, so people can't even download it in the first place.

Yep, Tencent, ie the Chinese government by proxy, bought 48% of Epic which catapulted them back into relevance.  The mad king sweeney claims that he retains creative control over the company.  What about the other controls beyond creative?  Who cares it prints money and stuff right.  Just keep giving out content for free, like facebook and all those other free platforms do.  All good.

Any ways we're dragging a gaming thread into the mud and mustn't do that, despite my shared annoyance with Epic Bribes eating many titles I'd have liked to buy and had on my steam wishlist before they were poached.

For what it's worth I have a whole bunch of games on the Epic store.  I haven't paid for a single one of 'em.
Don't really plan to.  Their store sucks but some of the games I've gotten for free are decent.

Okay it took a long time but I was able to get GTA V using the Epic Games launcher. The website is still DOA.

I am sorry so many people are having so much trouble. You have a full week to claim the game. I imagine it will be fixed by later today or tomorrow at the latest.

2020-05-14 3:23:46 PM
I try to link a free game every single week from a selection of what is available at that time. I usually browse

https://old.reddit.com/r/freegames/

and pick one that way.

GTA V was the elephant in the room. If I didn't mention it people would have raised eyebrows. If I did mention it people would say "that's nice and all but their website is down due to the volume of requests."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Finally had time to play this past week AND I got 3 free months of Xbox Game Pass from Newegg so I've been having a lot of fun. Loving Gris, Streets of Rage 4, Worms WMD, and especially Moving Out with the family. Moving Out is absolutely hilarious in it's simplicity. Enjoying Just Cause 4 however I'm noticing that there's something missing from the experience compared to Just Cause 3. Not sure if it's the overall gameplay or the lackluster visuals. I remember Just Cause 3, with it's flowering fields, being so much prettier. I dunno, it's been a few years since I played it so maybe my brain/memory is making sh*t up or maybe I'm not far enough into the game yet. Also finally picked up RE7: Biohazard Gold Edition on sale for PS4 so I'll be scaring myself sh*tless this weekend late at night in PSVR. And since Hello Neighbor is free on Game Pass my 8yo wants to play it together at 3am (she likes watching YouTube videos of people doing this and wants to try it herself) so I said sure. Tried the Epic Games launcher to pick up my free copy of GTA:V and after receiving the error message I was able to log in and everything was in Portuguese! Wasn't able to download the game though I can wait.

I don't know if it counts but Overlord (2008). You get to be the evil Overlord you always wanted to be. You beat up peasants, halflings, dwarves, elves, trees, unicorns, chickens and any other damn thing you please. Not least among the fun aspects of this game is burning down an enchanted forest.

So, this week I have this to contribute to the "what am I gaming" thread:

I tried to find a 1080p 24"-32" TV locally but none to be had, so a 40" it is.
"Hello Vizio, my old friend. Seems I am buying cheap again. I'll enjoy you until something burns out, then it's the end..in silence."

OH, believe me, that thought ran though my head. However, as these will be at my parents house while my Dad is in hospice, the idea of transporting an arcade cabinet at some point in the near future isn't that appealing. Hell, I still have to somehow get my dining room table tossed out (it weights a ton).

I was shocked how small a Pandora Box really is. You can see it next to a PS Mini Classic in my pics. While it's about the same height as the PS, it's slightly narrower and not as deep. It isn't even as big as the knockoff PS controllers that came with it. I would say if you buy one, get one where you can switch the smoothing filter on or off (maybe a scanline filter too).

I am on the fence about getting RDR2. Many sources claim that it is a great game, but I am afraid that it will turn out to be nothing more than endless fetch quests, but set in the time of US westward expansion.

Is the game that much different from GTA and other open world sandbox games that it is worth getting and playing?? I seem to tire quickly of a game when it is the same missions over and over. I tried The Outer Worlds, but gave up rather quickly because, at least to me, it was basically the same as Mass Effect, just different locations, and the same kinds of quests on repeat.

I have been having an extremely hard time lately finding a game that will keep me interested enough to play it through. Accordingly, I have been especially gun shy about purchasing any new games.

I occasionally play Warframe, but quickly tire of basically doing the same mission over and over. FFXIV, same thing; and leveling up is a pain in the ass. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is Skyrim in old Europe, and like Skyrim, fetch quests.

Maybe I am just impossible to please when it comes to games. I am destined to leave a trail of unfinished games in my wake, in search of the non-existent (at least to me) perfect game.

Mostly playing Dragon Quest VII and Animal Crossing.  Also started diving into the Bloodstained update.  There's a built in Randomizer now which makes it a lot more fun to replay.

Favorite beat-em-ups:  Probably the Dynasty Warriors series.  I like the historical period, like how absurd it can get, and love killing 2000 enemies in a single battle.

Except 9.  fark Dynasty Warriors 9.

2020-05-15 8:28:48 AM
X-COM Long War still rages on.  I got another base assault done and used the boost in raw materials, along with the constant UFO attacks to finally get my Demon with a Plasma Cannon.  I dropped something big with relative ease and got MOAR Elerium so I have 2 more Demon's in the que, along with 8 carapace armor and 8 kestrel armor, upgraded Arc Throwers, and several Pulse Lances for my MEK troops (thats the best gun they are going to get, I'm saving my Alien Heavies for Sniper Rifles).  I have 8 so far (heavies, not snipers) and will soon switch to killing the Muton Elite rather than capturing them.  I really need the third item slot.  During the week I made more plasma rifles and plasma carbines, so now all of my Infantry have Plasma rifles, all of my medics (along with being psionic) have plasma carbines, and most of my rocketeers and engineers have a plasma something.  The next big push is going to be 10 reflex cannons.  Lets get those assaults with double-tap up to snuff!

And I've been playing World of Warships Legends each day, getting 1 win so I can get my Daily Doubloons.  I also snuck into the ranked games for the first time ever with my Akatsuki (long range torpedo destroyer) and I have had the most amazing luck.  I've played 5 or six matches, and so far won them all, many with 3 or 4 kills.  My worst performance was trading my ship for a cruiser early in a match, but my team carried the day.  I am rank 8, which I'm sure is poor, and I have no doubt that I am simply lucky, but it is a very different playstyle from the regular matches.  I'm going to play more this weekend and see where I hit the wall in skill.  So far a lot of the players are falling for some really basic torpedo tricks and not doing basic precautions.

One Must Fall is without a doubt my favorite beat-em-up, but I have a warm spot for the Dead or Alive series.  Yes, I'm a dirty old man.

2020-05-15 8:56:02 AM
So I tried Epic last night to see if I could grab GTA V (yes, I know, I already bought it the day before, but at least this way I don't have to load Rockstar's goddamn launcher) and got it without a hitch.  I haven't actually downloaded it yet, I'm gonna wait a bit to do that because it's freakin' enormous, but I was able to "purchase" it at any rate just so it's in the library.

Oh, and as for favourite beat-em-ups, I was not really into a lot of them, and the ones I really enjoyed are pretty old school.  Karate Champ in the arcades, International Karate (and IK+) on the 8-bit Atari and Atari ST, and side-scrolling deals like the Double Dragon series and games like it.  Never really got into the hardcore beat-em-ups like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.

Oh, the old arcade D&D games were real good.

2020-05-15 9:01:53 AM
Managed to get GTAV just fine last night from Epic. I think I have a pretty large chunk of games from them thanks to their free games program. I think I've spent a grand total of $20 there when I bought Untitled Goose Game.

Currently trying to argue with my bank, which keeps flagging my purchases from fanatical.com as fraudulent activity. It isn't I'm legitimately trying to buy the Assassin's Creed games that I don't already have (IV, Rogue, Origins Gold Edition, & Odyssey Gold Edition) just to have the complete set before Valhalla drops at the end of the year.

As to the side note, it's not a genre i play much, but back in my mis-spent youth, two games did kind of dominate couch multiplayer.

The first one was on my friend's Mega Drive (known in the US as a Genesis) and can be summed up in one sentence "WISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE!" - I remember doing the first couple of Altered Beast levels over and over again

On my old Amiga 500, it was all about the Lee brothers in the original Double Dragon. I think we only got to Marian once, and I, unfortunately, lost the fight between the player characters at the end.

Now, back to this week's gaming. I didn't do much. LucklessWifeder got a new laptop and is trying to set up her Twitch channel. I'm probably not supposed to share that she's trying to figure out things at https://twitch.tv/FoFacy and has been playing Farming Simulator 19, which I also took a quick look at, playing the first of the six tutorials.

Outside of that, I played a Dungeons & Dragons one-shot. This one was vampire themed and set in the basement of a missing mad scientist's library (which also contained a mysterious mirrored labyrinth). Our DM told us to level up what had been level 3 characters to level 6 for this one. I carried on with my trusty Goblin Beastmaster Ranger and his companion animal wolf. Our rogue figured out that marking the mirrors with her dagger would allow us to find our way out of the labyrinth and back to freedom once we dealt with the reason villagers were going missing (spoiler: vampires!).

Once the party confronted the head vampire, my ranger was charmed and unable to fight. After a very one-sided combat thus far, the vampire had wounded most of the party and had morphed into bat form. Once initiative came around again, I wasn't able to break the charm, but the DM said that my wolf wasn't charmed and could take whatever actions. I said he was going to jump up and try and swallow the bat with a bite attack. I got my only good roll of the game, and so the vampire was defeated by the power of lupine digestion.

How are we this deep into a gaming thread that has Stardew Valley in the headline and no flame war about waifus?

Let me light that match and say that Abigail is hands down the best. She just seems to have a much more developed backstory than the other bachelorettes. It goes pretty deep, especially when you find out the Wizard is her father, not Pierre.

More FFVIIR, but on Hard Mode and actually playing with a serious materia setup instead half-assing it like on Normal. Just need one final Chapter 14 Resolution to do and then off to Hard Mode. Favorite beat-em up? Turtles in Time or River City Ransom.

Playing though the Mass Effect series. Have Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion lined up for afterwards. Considering picking up Stelaris afterwatds, but their "We think you should pay $160 for a 4 year old game and its DLC" model has preventing me from giving them any money so far. Still need to play through Bioshock3 also.

Got some HumbleBundle games too.

Maybe I should quit my job and spend the next 3 years catching up on video games.
