I think it's because it's simply unnecessary.

Besides, wasn't he based on Jimmy Durante?

Toucan Son-of-Sam? The cereal killer?

Looks like the Homestar Runner guys did that.

I don't like that over simplified style, personally, but it's not aimed at me, is it?

Just finished off a bag of these last week.

I think I'll make it through this crisis.

Meh. It's not my cup of tea, but its no worse than some of the animation I see aimed at kids. But if that's how the mascot is going to look, he needs to be on the box.

/ Seeing another mascot of my childhood change so drastically make me feel old and uncomfortable

I just showed the two pics to my 11-year old daughter.  She immediately picked the old style and said the new one looked weird.  Total demographic fail Froot Loops.

Worse than I thought before I clicked the link. guess I was expecting some feathered pixar type thing, which could have been an improvement if done right.

I didn't eat Froot Loops as a kid (Lucky Charms, FTW), so I don't really have fond memories of the old mascot design, but the new one just looks awful.

And at least give him (OR HER) a South American accent.  It used to have a sort of quasi- Cary Grant voice, and that just reeked of colonialism.

I understand an artsy type saying "Hey boss, I have an idea for Toucan Sam!" I even understand the boss saying "Sure, show me what you got!" I do not understand the levels of bosses that all said "Hell yes! That's our new look!"

It does look like they stole the design from a side character from Steven Universe or something.
I know it's fun to knock on Cal-Arts, and even more fun to knock on the knocking of Cal-Arts, but Jesus, especially after I got Netflix for the daughter during lockdown, I see all these cartoons using the exact same visuals.

It is because that is what you get when you design something to be as cheap as possible to digitally 2d animate.

I can't believe they designed a children's cereal character to appeal to the tastes of modern children and not the sentimentality of people in their 40s.

2020-05-14 3:32:46 PM
Might as well. When kids going to school now grow up they probably won't have any real toucans for reference.

Well, that's pretty interesting. As it is, Durante DID do promotions/promotional advertising for Kellogg's at one time so maybe that's where I got it from. Never heard of Coleman, though, but it seems they used his voice as inspiration. Somehow, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the schnozz was somehow related to Durante but they didn't go with it. Coleman didn't have a schnozzola like that.

CSB/  A number of years ago when we visited what used to be "Parrot World" in South Miami we saw a Toucan hanging out on a branch. My wife went to scratch its head and the bird liked it. He then "bit" her. However, the "bite" of a Toucan is absolutely painless...there is no way for the beack to clamp down like with birds who have smaller beaks. The edges, however, were raspy...kind of like sandpaper. Not many people can say they were "bit by a Toucan".  //end CSB

/we used to be the parents of many, many birds; Parrots, Cockatoo, Cockatiel, so many more. At one time we had about 17 of them in the house
//the vacuum got quite a workout what with the seeds being flung everywhere in "the bird room"

A tattoo shop here in Pittsburgh used Jimmy's catchphrase for the businesses moniker, perfect fit.

I think I preferred Quisp. And Count Chocula. And, for some reason, Rasin Bran especially when you got it all mushy with lots of milk...and sugar, of course.

Jeez..."the cereal days". Remember the "multi-packs" you could buy at the store, a pack of 10-12 single-serve sizes representing that many different flavors?!
