(Twitter)   Oh everybody look at Sweden. Isn't it so great that they never shut down and kept their economy from imploding? What? Their per capita death rate is now WORSE than the US? Well I'll be. Who saw this coming?   (twitter.com) divider line

And that's accepting that Sweden has a generally healthier population and with far better access to healthcare

So that twitter handle doesn't have bajillions of cases of covid where people are croaking all over the place, which I mean fair enough, it's just a twitter account, twitter accounts can't even get covid.

Not "Australia" - "The Australian". As in, the newspaper that was touting Sweden as a model for infection control.

I really think it's counter-productive to keep showing the death rate on a logarithmic graph.  People who don't know what that means (and there are a lot of them) keep saying that we're beating this virus, and I'll bet the logarithmic graphs are a big reason they think that.

Yes, I understand the Y-axis would be huge if we kept it standard, but I really don't see a good alternative.

For those what like numbers, The Hopkins data have Sweden at 33.98/100,000 and the US at 25.71/100,000.  Also, the Swedish mortality is now higher at 12.4% to theUSs' 6.0%.

India is claiming 0.19 (!)/100,000.  I have spent some time in India, and I'm just assuming that's a reporting issue.  Holy Frijoles is that going to be a monkeyfarm when the actual data hits from THAT.  The Indian infrastructure and population density are not going to do them any favors on this one.

You'd think a mortality rate is a mortality rate.  I can understand a higher % of infections in countries that don't practice a proper lockdown, but a higher mortality rate when you catch it?  What causes that??

OK. Compare Sweden to it's neighbors: Denmark, Norway, and Finland.

Keep in mind when you do that that Denmark has five times the population density of Sweden, which should make transmission easier, and yet-whose per-capita death rate is worse?

(Hint: It's Sweden's).

Generally, it's the population.  Italy was so hard hit mortality-wise because there is such a large elderly population in the area where it started.  Or populations with higher comorbidities (obesity, high blood pressure, etc) have a harder time than healthier populations

There are other factors too, though, like the number of ICU beds and ventilators available, as well as the number of trained medical personnel available in a given area

2020-05-14 10:02:17 AM
Think of this another way. The US has bungled the pandemic response so badly that it's not much better than having done nothing.

Many things.
- genetic predisposition (doesn't seem to be the case here!)
- overall health (probably not the case)
- access to health care, when needed (this is a problem for many in the US, and could be in Sweden if their hospital system is overwhelmed and people can't get the treatment they require)

Need more details about the specifics.

Journalist sending the tweet is from Australia. The @australian is referring to the The Australian, a newspaper

I guess that the tweets author is calling out that some in Oz are advocating opening the economy like Sweden?

Yes, and he also said everything needs to be open now.  That's the opposite.  He's doing a move where he just says things and people remember the things they like and forget the things they don't.

This is what carnival barking is.  Oh, you don't want to see a two-headed dog, we've also got a bearded lady.  You don't want to see the lady, we'll we've got a strongman in here too. And freaks!

Likely its just people not reporting non serious cases. Sweden is very rural, and doctors still make house calls. Most cases are probably told to just stay home and while they may get some at home care they never receive actual test kits or entered into the database until they are on their deathbeds. Their positive test rate is about 20% right now which is also way too high.
