Does anyone seriously believe that contact tracing apps will stay confidential? Every police force in the world will be salivating at the possibilities they offer.

Yup. There's no way in hell I will ever download such an app. MILES too open to abuse.

When the capability to put a GPS into a cell phone happened, it wasn't long before the government started pushing for it for E911. All in the name of public safety. New rules being enacted shortly will require GPS. Doesn't matter since at least 85% of carriers use GPS to comply with e911 anyway.

Contact tracing will become mandatory. They will deem it a public safety issue, and one hell of a Christmas present to law enforcement.

Remember... Not one innocent man has ever been convicted of a crime he didn't commit, so if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about!

Washington State is making this mandatory for reopening your restaurant. Only resturaunts though, no other businesses need to do it, but they promised the data is impossible to abuse.

If they actually follow through with this batshiat crazy idea... wow.

I wonder how many of my favorite restaurants I'll lose.

Bet you carry a smartphone with you every where you go, don't you?

Honestly, I am constantly being yelled at by all my relatives and contacts for not answering calls or text, because I left my phone at home in the bedroom. I hate being tethered to the thing and only have it with me when "I" think it may be useful, which is mostly in the car, but still rarely. I really don't care if other people think that I should be available to them at all times. So good luck tracing my locations with it.

And yet not as bad as not knowing the difference between "woman" and "women."

Like nails on a chalkboard.

freetomato: I knew a Federal Air Marshal who was stalked by an airline employee. She tapped into the schedule that the DHS shares with the airline, and managed to "coincidentally" be on all his flights, seated right next to him.  Once he figured it out, crazy woman was fired. I imagine she is on a watchlist now.

I'd very much like to know how many flights it took that federal investigator to figure it out.
If the N was >2, he is dangerously incompetent.

Hell I knew someone in their teens who did this years ago, father and daughter came in to buy a TV, signed up for the store rewards program which gave him all he needed to find the daughter on Facebook and try to hit on her. Which creeped her out enough to tell her dad who called the store and the guy was out of a job. Hopefully he learned a lesson.

Whelp, we said this would happen in the thread a day or two ago.

No shock.

However, unfortunately, it's still more important to contact trace covid cases, so all we can do is try to improve security around that data, and beat the crap out of people like this guy in dark alleys.  Fortunately that's my hobby anyway.
