It's looking more and more like Biden might be the winner. This is good news for... deficit reduction.

This land is your land, this land is my land,
from the nursing home, to the intensive care ward,
from the federal prisons, to the VA hospitals,
this virus sucks for you and me

As I went shopping, with a mask on my face,
I saw beside me, a red-hat laughing
He was hording, more toilet paper
Giant aholes need more it's plain to see

This bill also lets wealthy people who make money from dividends and royalties claim the earned income tax credit, which is an anti-poverty provision. pic.twitter.com/5Q7fFabjtd

Even some of the good things are bad. There's an anti-price gouging provision. Except that it's enforced by the pro-price gouging Federal Trade Commission, and it seems to allow the FTC to block state attorney generals from bringing actions under this section.

tax credits: a mess, complicated, easy to mess up, ready for all sorts of scaling back

you'll never guess what option made it into the bill that's the *starting position* for negotiating with a party that would rather see the world burn!

I mean, the House still has a job to do, even if the Senate refuses to do theirs.

Be nice if they decided another impeach vote was in order, or any line that amounts to "This President is unfit for office in this time of crisis and we are submitting a vote of no confidence in this time of emergency" You law talking types can figure out what applies, no doubt there's a laundry list to choose from, starting with "Criminal negligent homicide" and working from there.

mint the coin. $2000 for everyone. pelosi out

2020-05-12 3:54:35 PM
Let it pass the House and fail in the Senate.  Every sitting Senator will have to defend to their constituents why they failed to support it, and McConnell will have to justify to his constituents why he wouldn't allow a straight up or down vote on it.

How much more could congress really give to individual Americans?

Isn't the Treasury empty? Or will they hope China and other nations will continue to buy the debt?

2020-05-12 3:56:49 PM
LOL

Why is it so hard to give people money?  There's an election in November.  You have carte blanche from the public to buy their votes.  Jesus christ what the fark.

2020-05-12 3:59:48 PM
Look, we all know the do nothing Democrats are going to force this bill through on a partisan vote and it's going to be filled with such claptrap like "ensuring that all people have equal access to these funds". We all know who those "people" are and the hard working Republican men in the Senate are going to have their hands full trying to reason with the fake news media and their disingenuous agenda. We need to rise up in support of the true American party against the Democrats whose bill will convert everyone to communism and should not even be considered lest it stain the Senate chambers with its socialism.

2020-05-12 4:00:49 PM
Passing a bill that's about 20 words long giving everyone in the country $2,000 per month only to be held up by the republican senate is about a perfect scenario as dems can wish for.  WTF.  Just give people the money and let republicans defend holding up a clean bill.  Why are you making this so hard.

Trump already lost his re-election campaign. There's just no way he can win with 30% unemployment and 150,000 deaths.
/still going to vote for Grandpa Joe.

Treasury is never empty. Congress can appropriate as much or as little as it would like, since we issue our own currency.

Because Joe has laid out a clear, concise explanation of what he would have done differently to stop the virus, and a detailed plan on how the country will get back to 3% unemployment.

Now THAT is sarcasm.

You don't need to bailout banks and landlords if you just give people money to pay their rent and mortgages you stupid farking assholes.

Can't believe I get called a russian bot all day because I said democrats are bad at politics.

Massive tax cut for the rich, tons of money for the lower class.   Seems like a real humdinger of a plan for the middle class.

3T$? Neat the 2020 deficit will reach 5 trillion at the end of the month.

2020-05-12 4:11:58 PM
They need to make the bill simple by having only one thing in it. Just give Americans another stimulus check! That way the repubs will have to vote against giving Americans money and can't blame it on something the bill contains.

Politics is the art of the possible.

Just giving money to everyone isn't possible in America. America is too fundamentally broken as a country to allow that.

Theory Of Null: They need to make the bill simple by having only one thing in it. Just give Americans another stimulus check! That way the repubs will have to vote against giving Americans money and can't blame it on something the bill contains.

Yup make the bill 2-3 lines.

Every american who earned less than 100 000$ in 2019 gets 2000$.
Every unemployed american gets 500$ more per week for the next year.
Anyone working in a hospital gets a 1000$ bonus per week.

To fund it, we do a special one time 30% asset tax on billionaires.

2020-05-12 4:36:06 PM
They added in poison pills because of course they did.  scrap the hot mess that is the original cares act, give a temp UBI until its over.

2020-05-12 4:38:16 PM
And when the Republicans vote this bill down along party lines, thus farking over the American people in the middle of a genuine health and economic crisis, the Democrats running against them can say "Now, see? If I were your Senator you'd have gotten that additional $1,200 per person, and your small business employer wouldn't have to shut down and fire you."

Maybe that turns into votes for Democrats running against Republicans for Senate seats. Maybe not. But it will give John & Jane Q. Public something to think about.

And no, the Q doesn't stand for QAnon. Those people are hopeless.

Then they can accuse the Republicans of delaying relief for average Americans.  The Republican priority is a liability shield for business which shouldn't be necessary if it is so safe to reopen. And if businesses follow safety and health precautions they should have nothing to worry about.  Meanwhile workers need help.

Dusk-You-n-Me: Pelosi put the corporate lobbyist bailout in her new legislative proposal

And that's how these negotiations have been working.

There are four members of Congress who have input: Pelosi and McCarthy in the House; McConnell and Schumer in the Senate. That's it. Anybody else is just flapping their gums for free press back home.

The above bosses will draw this up behind closed doors with Mnuchin, plop the mess on legislators' desks and give them maybe an hour to read it, if that.

I will be surprised if there's even a roll call vote in the House. Anybody who objects (so far it's been only AOC and a few hardcore deficit hawk Republicans) will not even get the chance to register that objection on the record.

They still haven't figured out remote voting. And they don't want to.

2020-05-12 4:44:25 PM
There's some bad stuff in there, but it's mostly good, and a lot of families really need that extra 6k in direct payments, so I'm for it, even though I think the bill could be better.

Actually the real sticking point is the GOP won't pass it if it doesn't include indemnification for businesses against liability for thier employees and customers dying of covid because they opened too soon. Not a real popular idea with the Dems or anyone else with a functioning brain.

The money quote: "The bill would give relief to wealthy residents of high-tax states ..."

Democrats buttering up their wealthy donors. Government gives them money and it is kicked back in the form of campaign donations. Same Democrat playbook as always.

Bill contains a tax cut for the rich, thanks, Pelosi.

Contains bailouts for lobbyists, thanks, Pelosi.

Contains COBRA subsidies going directly to insurers, not a Medicare expansion, thanks, Pelosi.

And put Bernie's tax on Wall Street transactions.  Wanna play the market in volatile times? Wanna engage in high-speed trading to make millions every time stock prices change by a penny? PAY FOR IT.

Taxing the trades will help kill volatility and slow down the collapse of the market as the bankers and hedge fund managers decide if they really want to have to pay Uncle Sam on every trade.

Pelosi truly is the patron saint of the Centrist.

"Put on a good show, make people believe you're good, but don't actually try to do good things -- demonize the people who do, and spitefully taunt and ignore the future of your party."

$3T total "for the people". So the percentage of this that will actually make it to anyone outside the 1% is:

a) 5%
b) 3%
c) 1%

/ trick question since Yertle will sit on this like every other bill since 2018
