TL/DR

....if you thought Trump could still win, your best move would be to give the economy the biggest short-term boost possible with massive government spending, then worry about cutting it back later. Doing nothing now, even if you're planning to promote cuts in a year or two, suggests only that you think the Trump presidency is all but a lost cause.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not just that there's no sincere sentiment underneath the Republican reticence to do too much to save the economy. Republicans are genuinely fearful that people will be too thankful if government helps them too much and that the crisis will make the passage of stronger safety-net programs more likely in the future.

And as for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he's nothing if not practical. If you think Trump's chances of reelection are dwindling, why would you try to save the economy now? Imagine if you passed measures that made the recovery easier but Trump lost anyway. Then Biden wouldn't have such a hard time, and Republicans getting a huge backlash win in 2022 would be less likely. Better to keep everyone miserable for a couple more years. McConnell can just confirm as many hard-right judges as possible between now and January, and consider his work done.

That means, perhaps above all, resuming the deficit fear-mongering that was such an effective tool to hamstring Barack Obama's presidency. It also means adjusting their policy and spending agenda to the defensive. They aren't bothering to talk much about new tax cuts or anything else they'd like to pass. Instead, the focus is shifting to cutbacks and constraints. "Automatic spending cuts as the economy improves" is something a Republican would want only if there's a Democrat in the White House. It shows that that's precisely what at least some of them are anticipating.

Hilarious.  Trump will fight them every step of the way, as if they want to hamstring Biden, it will cut back on Trump's current thirst for power.  He won't accept that he is going to lose.

Truthfully, the best thing that could happen in the next few months is McConnell stepping off a sidewalk and being run over by a runaway bus.

Anything that would take that scumsucking piece of shiat out of the Senate would be a win at this point.

I was just thinking this today.

It would totally be their MO to give up on Trump, let Biden win, and revert to their former two-fisted tactic of complaining about everything he does while blocking everything he tries at every step.

It's the one thing they do extremely well.

That was a weird thing I saw on fox.

They had poll results that showed approve/disapprove for dumpy/Biden. As usual Biden was ahead where it counted but they added up the scores and dumpy had a higher percentage overall. Higher for what I didn't catch but I have never seen anyone add the results like that for a final score.

I hope I explained that correctly. It was bizarre.

I have a succinct quote that illustrates my view on this point.

The liberals of the world are trying to make the world better for everyone.
The conservatives of the world are trying to make the world better for themselves, and screw everyone else.

A secondary part of this statement is to point out what Meriadoc Brandybuck said to Treebeard:  "You are part of this world, aren't you?!"  Because in doing so, he was pointing out that the entire world is connected.  And whatever happened to those people will eventually happen to everyone in the world.

Conservatives don't realize that we are all connected.  They only see the short term.

Anyone who thinks this election is a shoe-in for either side is probably a bit clueless.  There is a lot of time left.  Both Trump and Biden have extreme cases of foot-in-mouth disease that can strike at any moment.  The economy is bad, but it probably would have been a bragging point if the pandemic had not happened.  Trump's rabid base has not even remotely given up on him and will show up to vote which makes the GOP operative's giving up outright silly especially given that demographics that oppose Trump have historically not been very reliable at showing up to vote.

I want to see Trump gone.  But I won't feel the election is even remotely in the bag unless the national polls give Biden a 10% lead consistently and the polls in the battleground state are very, very good from Biden with a huge lead in the projected electoral vote.

2020-05-11 6:21:15 PM
Worked in 2010, it'll work in 2022.

Conservatives can't fundamentally recognize the value of preventing something bad, so they'll never appreciate the stimulus whether we avoid a depression or not, and the death counts will lose all meaning in the next year so they won't even care that the money saved some lives. Conservative Democrats will run screaming to austerity as soon as the really bad numbers start coming out.

Republican electoral strategy is stealing the farking election; they damn well know they won't hold on to power without voter suppression and foreign interference.

Ideally the liberals would be the ones pushing for all sorts of changes to address the many issues of the world while the conservatives would be the ones pushing for caution and preserving the things that do work and the two groups would sort of balance each other with conservatives checking the more reckless ideas and liberals pushing the reluctant and cautious conservatives to concede ground to careful progress.  In america those conservatives are mostly the establishment dems, the progressives are the left wing dems, and the republicans are an insane frankenstein cult of religious loonies, con men, and rich assholes that think the gilded age is the ideal model for government.

GOP has gone all-in on Trump. All Trump has to do is call Mexicans rapists and murderers again and his voters will in droves vote.

Not exactly.

Based on 2016 numbers, 19.2% of the total popuation voted for the gop, and 20% for the dems.

So looking just at the gop there are three types of republician voters right now:

1) The die hards, these make up, i'm going to guess, 15% of the gop total voters.  These are the ones that will vote for you if you have an R by your name no matter what.  These range of single issue voters 'I don;t care what the gop canidate does, he supports pro-life legislation, thats good enough for me' types.  (the dems have the same 15% or so voters)

2) Trump loyalist: these are people who just support Trump, they don;t care about anything else but trump.  They vote R cause Trump says so.  (this number is fluid)

3) Never Trumpers, these are the gop that will vote gop down ticket but will not vote for trump.

There is a 4th catigory, the 'no longer gop due to trump)

Polls of the GOP shoe Trump with a 85% to 91% approval rating. this is tpyical obama's rating ranged for 77 to 91%.

now, one reason the approval for trump is so high, and the gop lost a lot of seats in 2018, is the 4th catigory, the walk away GOP.  Trump and his bot army likes ot talk about the walk away dems, but i suspect there are a lot of gop who walked away after trump won.

The other issue is, the gop alone doesnlt win crap, they have 19% of the vote.  Its the 61% of independants that pick the president.  I suspect that a lot of them gave trump a chance, because why not.  And have since changed there mind.s  This si what will doom trump.  It won; take much.

I suspect the election to go one of two ways, the economy bounces back and is roaring in nov, turmp wins by the skin of his teeth again, i'm talking 271-290 EC votes.

Or the EC count si am seeing are true or get worse and Trump lose sin a land slide.  The indies will decide, but i am fairly certin the gop party has shrunk.
