(Stamford Advocate)   Barter is back, baby. What am I bid for a bar of Yardley's Ginger & Sassafras soap, or a 2oz bottle of hand sanitizer, or a batch of homemade edibles? Got books? I'll trade premium for those. Watch out for land mines and stay on the marked path   (stamfordadvocate.com) divider line

Hand sanitizer is back in stock now.

It is hilarious at my local grocery store. They are getting theirs from a local distiller and it comes in vodak bottles that say Hand Sanitizer. I need to get one just to put in my bar.

I actually thought it was a reference to this guy, sans biting monkeys.

The Greatening can be exchanged for a sack of barley

I trade pieces of paper for goods at my local grocery store. It's one of many stores in the area with similar arrangements.

Huh.

And yet, I took all my beaver pelts to Sierra Trading Post the other day and they asked me to leave...

I don't know if I want exactly what you have but if we exchange what we have for something representing its value maybe we can barter with that.

Farnham's Freehold was Heinlein writing bad Heinlein fanfiction.

Pretty much any local craft distillery is doing this now.  Our local one sells it in their liquor bottles with a different label on it or in gallon milk jugs.  They are selling at a similar price per ounce to what you would have found sanitizer at pre-COVID.

Basically they do not run out of the stuff unless someone wants a several hundred gallon order. If you want more than 20 at a time they simply ask you call ahead.  We wanted 4 gallons for my office and they said just come on down we have plenty in stock.

One by me you can drive up and buy it from your car. You can get  4 oz bottles or buy it by the gallon.

Or you could quit organizing your life around buying things, and suddenly most of these "shortages" wouldn't even exist.

Or you can keep doing what youre doing now, since that is an evolutionary end, and probably what all of you hope for anyway--the end of thinking and the installation of a consumer unit that will operate just like most of you do now--like cancer.

Hmm you may be on to something. Like you give me goods, then I'd write you a note promising a certain value of goods, then you'd take that "note of promise" (we'll work on the name) and give it to someone else and they give you goods. It's like barter but we only have to carry paper and not our whole inventory.
