(Washington Post)   Woman goes $600K in debt to buy wholesale masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and face shields to give out for free to hospital workers. Probably not the smartest thing to do but it's the thought that counts   (washingtonpost.com) divider line

You know, if you give those things to non-hospital workers it would help cut down on the infection rate making their jobs easier as well.

Moar like:
1) Buy PPE on credit
2) Get press attention and start a GoFundMe
3) Profit

$600k might have been a bit much. But, depending on how far and wide the story makes it (and, if it's on Fark, it's already circulated on Reddit 10 days ago and FaceBook last week), she could pocket a couple million off this scheme!

Where did she find $600k worth of PPE to buy?

You haven't been able to buy a mask or respirator in this country for two months.

There are exactly zero available.

I smart person would realize a pilot has to fly a training flight on a regular basis to remain qualified both legally and skill wise.  As such, they had to fly the planes anyway.

I know it's hard to go around the paywall and actually read the article, but a lot of you in here probably ought to know a little about this woman first. She's done this before, after 9/11. She realized that people need whatever gear and equipment NOW, not after all the fund-raising is over. She also saw that there were specific needs that individual workers had that can be hampered by a bureaucracy that's trying to deal with hundreds or thousands in a crisis, that she could handle, and went out and did it, and worried about the fundraising later. Once the needs were met after 9/11, she went out and raised the money to pay for it. She's doing the same thing this time, and she's also leveraging some of the relationships she formed during 9/11 with various businesses that worked with her. She's the sort of persistent, "I'm going to get this done no matter what" type of person, who has the right mix of energy, friendliness, firmness, and "motherly guilt trippiness" to pull this off. Good for her.

Also mentioned in the article is Housing Works and their CEO, another angel, Charles King. They've been working tirelessly to get PPE in the nands of health workers, get homeless into hotels (and helped clean their rooms), and helping to honor those who have died.

-Home equity line of credit.  She did the same thing during 9/11.  Help first and fundraise later.

-Hospitals don't want to look bad and stick to their "only vetted supplies" excuse to reject them.  She also wants the distribution filmed to raise awareness and have documentation for when she eventually fundraises.

-The obvious insinuation is that she's doing something the government can't. She's "cutting through red tape".   For those particular workers, she did exactly that.    But, it's faulty logic to believe she wouldn't run into the same problems the government is facing if her operation grew.   It's one thing to get some of your distributor connections to throw a few crumbs your way, get volunteers to sort, bag, and distribute them to a few hospitals.  It's another to meet the ongoing needs of tens of thousands of hospitals, nursing homes, essential government operations and offices, and first responder headquarters.    Could the government response be better?  Yes.  Could they have been better prepared?  Yes.   Is she helping fill in some gaps that are getting overlooked?  Yes.   Every case of supplies she gets doesn't get distributed somewhere else, so she's doing what she can to advocate for her city.

I'm not going to take food from some rando handing it out on a street corner. I don't want anything from some rando handing it out on a streetcorner. The rando could be evil or insane, and have adulterated the products in some fashion. Hospitals are not going to look bad for not taking unvetted supplies. They're going to look smart and careful.

This woman may or may not mean well, I don't have enough information to say. But for PPE, there needs to be some control on the supply chain to ensure it's safe and usable.

I can't by for myself, but I can buy for the medical industry.
Still, it is only charity if you can afford.
If not then you are giving away someone else's money.

Even if that were the case, I would not be mad.  She is doing what our government SHOULD have been doing in the first place.

As it stands, this is the 2nd time she's done this (the first was in the aftermath of 9/11).  Back then, she payed off her debt by selling part of her art collection.  She will likely do the same thing here.

Unlike food, PPE can be more easily inspected for quality and safety. And these hospital workers are reusing masks and stitching together socks in order to protect themselves, for fark sake, since their hospitals can't or won't.
This woman works with reputable companies that provide legit PPE made in America, she has proved herself before in 9/11. And she wants that photography crew there to demonstrate complete transparency.
