I had an old manager who used to say Baking Cakes in conversations about projects progressing forward. As in "Now we're baking cakes!"

I wanted to slap him, instead I would fire up the management bullshiat generator for my email responses

Two suggestions (from someone with scant cake experience who did this for his mom's birthday a month ago):

1) Find a poundcake recipe and make some layers.

2) Find a buttercream recipe and make some of that.

3) Combine those into a cake-shaped thing. If the layers are thick I'd recommend slicing them horizontally into more layers.

Poundcake is easy and people really like it. Buttercream is, well, if you're unfamiliar with buttercream I will leave it to you to learn about buttercream by making some and then eating the results.

Don't try to overdo things.

When frosting, apply a thin skimcoat to all sufaces and allow to set, 5-10 min. This prevents the crumbs from migrating to the surface of the decorative coating.

Red Velvet and German Chocolate are my only two suggestions.

Duncan Hines over Pillsbury. Both over Great Value.

The Funfetti doesn't add anything flavorwise but is a nice touch for the young-at-heart.

Red wine chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream.

I made this last year for my Mom's birthday. I'm more of a cheesecake baker so I had never piped frosting on a cake before. Other than looking a little wonky it was outstanding.  I made her a banana cream cheesecake this year.
