Nerd nuke:  KOTOR is hugely overrated. Most of the plot and just about every side quest is recycled from Bioware's Neverwinter Nights.

The top of that list looks about right.  Rebellion would have been a lot higher if the tactical battle system had actually been finished.

My dad bought himself an N64 for SotE.  I played the hell out of it when I visited him that summer.  When he sold his console later on, he gave me the game.

I have tried on 3 separate occasions to play KOTOR.  Originally on PC.  Then the Original XBox.  Then on the iPad.   I don't know what it is I just CAN NOT get into this game and year after year I'm TOLD it's the greatest Star Wars game EVER.

I just finished Fallen Order and while it's not the best Star Wars game ever, it's so much more enjoyable to me.
Loved Force Unleashed....not II as much.

Grew up with Dark Forces (maybe the first first-person-shooter I ever played?  Maybe it was James Bond Nightfire?) and was disappointed it was wiped from existence with Rogue One.  Loved it.  Mysteries of the Sith?  Loved it.  Why can't they remaster THESE games?

Even loved Racer (fun racing game, wouldn't rank it as a great Star Wars game)

But I can't play this damn KOTOR.

Maybe, since it's backwards compatible, I should try it AGAIN, on the XBox One?

I know, I know!!!  KOTOR is an RPG.   But it's also Star Wars so I WANT to try and like it.  I haven't played/liked an RPG from day one.  I tried Fallout:  New Vegas (which my 18 year old tells me is THE best RPG he's ever played).  I got like 15 minutes into it and couldn't handle it.

Teras Kasi wasn't that bad. I enjoyed it well enough when it came out. Sure, it wasn't a great fighting game, but it was a Star Wars fighting game, and it had some neat unlockable costumes and characters.

At the very least, it was better than that game where Darth Vader turns out to be a scorpion or some such BS.

The Force Unleashed was really annoying because of the terribly implemented platforming. It was just way too easy to slide off of a platform a fall to a cheap death, which was stupid for a character who was a highly trained Sith. Games like Uncharted handle the platforming a LOT better, where your character catches themselves on the edge before they fall. In Force Unleashed I'd often fall off a platform an die simply because I slashed with my lightsaber one too many times.

The fact that they have the SWTOR MMO ranked higher than "Star Wars Galaxies" completely exposes this list to be absolute drivel.

Also, "X-wing VS.Tie Fighter" should certainly be higher ranked.

Droidworks was "Edutainment", I believe, which was a specifically-excluded category.

There's a footnote at the end of the list:

*OK, not quite EVERY Star Wars game ever. For the sake of my sanity (and your precious time), handheld and mobile games are out, along with pinball, browser games, TV games, expansion packs (remember those?), that Star Wars game that was only ever released in Japan, and anything branded as 'edutainment'. I've also just given the first system (or systems) that a game appeared on, rather than list various conversions.

Bingo. A Star Wars game with player built everything, a 32 class grind to unlock a Force Sensitive character, Rebel vs Empire PVP, Bounty Hunter vs Jedi PVP, a shocking variety of mounts, a Space expansion, home decorating, and the fact that you could be a mayor of a player town was a major drain on my time in my twenties.

Majorly broken and absurdly unbalanced, but a great player experience.

It's worth another shot. It might be the combat system that's giving you trouble. It takes some adjustment. It looks like action RPG combat. It controls like action RPG combat. It's turn based combat with results coming purely from stats and hidden dice rolls. I had the same problem with The Witcher, and after an hour of slogging through room after room of nothing but combat and cutscenes I quit the game. I know there's an RPG in there somewhere, but I never saw it.

If you don't like RPGs your never going to like KOTOR. KOTOR is a great game but it is very much an RPG first and a Star Wars game second. The gameplay itself is basically ripped from D&D 3.5 down to stats and character turns with only slight modifications for Star Wars powers.

Also your 18 year old is wrong, Witcher 3 is the best RPG followed by the Mass Effect series (specifically 2 and 3 although 1 does a fantastic job worldbuilding) and then you have New Vegas.

Of the limited number that I played (all PC games, all solo):

TIE Fighter was and remains awesome. I keep a Win98 box up and running just for games like that. I still remember the TIE Fighter demo that came on a 3 1/2" diskette and played that for months while waiting for the real thing. Wrote several custom missions for TIE Fighter and still play them from time to time.

X-Wing was almost as good but I'd rather fly for the Empire and the Secret Order.

For me XvT is in third place in that trio, perhaps because I was not very good at it.

Racer is a lot of fun. My son and I used to play head to head all the time.

Aforementioned son loved KOTOR; I never really got in to it.

I installed a custom character chipset on my TRS-80 Model 1 because it came with a TIE Fighter game.

The best RPG of all time is Planescape: Torment.  That is the RPG that all lesser RPGs must bow before in silent reverence.

I always have some reservations about recommending the Mass Effect trilogy.  Each game had its strong points, and when it is good it is really, REALLY good, but each game also had some unpolished or weak areas that dragged it down.  Above any of the Mass Effect games I'd put Skyrim, Chrono Trigger, and FF4, 6, 7, and 9.  Maybe Morrowind as well, which if remade would be the best Elder Scrolls game ever, but feels somewhat dated today.

If you happen to have it from one of the many SW sales, the original 2004 Battlefront just had multiplayer servers restored. The original version of Battlefront 2 had the same thing happen a year or two ago

Dont. The first one is trash compared to the second one. Storywise its a good game, but mechanics and items and everything thats actually rpg related will feel incomplete and pointless compared to kotor 2

But skimming through the pile of shiat the author made its pretty obvious they just looked up rankings for star wars games and then just wrote garbage to justify placings on the list

thanks for the heads up.  Leading into the now time i picked up an xbox, which was my first console since N64 and this game came with it.  I played through the game in a couple days and it's quite good, though the big story arc is pretty obvious because in order to stay cannon there isn't much else that could happen.  Still definitely worth the play though.

That, sadly, is the case.  I can NOT get into RPGs and I can't understand what draws people to like them.  My son LOVES the things, it's all he plays.  He just started Outer Worlds (which I'm told is Fallout in space) and it just looks AWFUL.

Oh fark this list right in the ass. It's not worse than the Jedi dueling game for the paddle controllers and quite frankly,

Technically RDR2 is slightly RPG since it has a morality system and you actually get to make some choices that semi matter. And that is the core of what i find engaging in RPGs, that you get to interact with the world in engaging ways and meaningful ways. In a game like Mass Effect you get more or less the same story each time but you get to decide how to approach the story and get different outcomes as a result. Meanwhile with a game like Doom you get the exact same experience every time, maybe you can try different playstyle but you will still fight the same bosses at the same times and for me I get almost the same experience as having played the game from watching someone play it which isn't the case in a good RPG.

This isn't to say that Doom is a bad game its just a linear game which to me is fundamentally boring, sometimes good gameplay and story save them but even then I really never play through the game more than twice as by then I've experienced everything there is to experience in the game and it no longer holds any interest.

2020-05-05 10:47:39 AM

Anenu: Technically RDR2 is slightly RPG

I know what you're saying but it's VERY slight (I'm annoyed I have to eat, for example, and brush my horse).
But I alternate between an open world, do whatever I want type type like RDR2 and a more linear story, like Jedi: Fallen Order.
I can't follow up an open world with an open world....I need to cleanse the palate, as it were.

But what I don't like is an enemy standing in front of me and then I have to open a spreadsheet of weapons and stats and damage and yada yada yada.  It's just never been my thing.

Truth be told, I think I'm just not smart enough to figure it all out.  My son, luckily, is very smart which is why I assume he loves them so much.  He HATES first person shooters (I would rather spend all day playing Call of Duty than 10 minutes of Mario: Thousand Year Door)

Did you install the Repaired/Restored content?

KotOR2 was rushed out the door with a lot of content, especially at the end, deleted. That is why the third act is so short and dull. The content was actually on the disk, just written-out. The mod linked above (you can also get it through Steam Workshop if you got the game there) will re-enable that content.

I second that motion. Playing the restored content mod makes the endgame bearable. I am still pissed at Lucasarts for pushing them to make the holiday deadline instead of finishing it properly. It would have absolutely surpassed the original in every way.

I've played probably 80% of these.

I take issue to Jedi Power Battles being so low on the list.  That was a fun 2.5D side-scrolling beat-em-up

Aside from a few others I'd shuffle around, it's pretty close yeah.
