arcgear: more bombs laden with the kung-flu

but seriously, I don't think any proper nation-state would resort to such war crimes.  retaliation is pretty much a foregone conclusion: escalation to mushroom clouds and lead vaults.

Which is why Trump's recent allegations about the "Wuhan labs" are so dangerous.  It directly implicates our own stated nuclear response...and the Chinese know that.

It's not like it's a farking secret...it's the underpinning of our post-WW2 deterance.

Donnie just flushed it away...and that's the BEST case scenario.

Riche: Kalashinator: Riche: Why hasn't anybody developed or announced a stealth cruise missile? You would be getting the best of both worlds-- blowing the hell out of distant targets with zero warning and zero risk of getting your crew shot down.

A stealth cruise missile wouldn't be cheap, but it would still be peanuts compared to the acquisition and operational costs of a fleet of stealth aircraft. I sometimes suspect the USAF has a modest stockpile and are keeping them super-secret.

Or decommissioned them:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-129_ACM

And there's still updated versions of the non-nuclear AGM-86, with a conventional one in active service and nuclear successor in the works to replace them.

Sweden/Germany developed the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KEPD_350

UK/France/Italy also developed the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Shadow

Could be more from other nations, but I didn't delve deeper into it.  Knowing how susceptible I am to wiki-walking, I'd wind up at the production of The New Yankee Workshop or some shiat, not knowing how the hell I got there.

Also, If you're prone to wiki-walking, stay clear of TVtropes unless you have an entire day to kill. That site is pure internet quicksand.

not enough beer: Cythraul: Ringshadow: We've had bombers that can cross the world with dangerous payload for decades. Why is this news?

It's news because it implies that China is slowly becoming our military equal.  And that when their economy gets strong enough, they will attemp to replace the U.S. as one of their major trading partners.  Then they will use that military might to go tell us to fark ourselves.

Not in a direct invasion of the United States, mind you. But more like China using its military might to invade other smaller countries to exert its will. You know, like the way the United States has been doing for the past 60 years.   And some of those smaller nations may be friends of ours.

They won't try to replace us as a trading partner. They need us to buy their shiat. I will also point out China has bought like 3 aerospace companies trying to build a reliable jet engine and their attempt at an airliner has been a farking disaster. The FAA and EASA have nothing shiat it down multiple times.

It would be wrong to underestimate the Chinese. They have 4 times as many people as the US, so for every outstanding scientist or engineer that we have, they can have 4 if they apply themselves to educating the population. Vast numbers of their people can live in substandard conditions but as long as they all produce something and contribute to the tax base, their national GDP can still match that of the US. The population may be dirt poor but the government gets paid.

Over time, they'll catch up and potentially exceed the West in technology overall. They're certainly giving us a run for our money. If there's anything history has shown us, it's that no one is untouchable, no empire is invulnerable and a determined group of people should never be underestimated.

This could be good in the sense of competition leading to more innovation overall - eg, the Space Race, better products, more economic competitiveness, etc. It could also be bad if it leads to war.

The people sent to fight wars generally don't make much noise about it because they've been told that they're "fighting for their country", but the only people who benefit are politicians and people who make money making weapons. Let's not have a war.

Strategic bombers are far more dangerous  in an anti-shipping role.

Why bomb LA when you can sink all the ships & slowly strangle Hawaii, Japan, & South Korea?
Combine this with attack subs, smart mines , & autonomous underwater drones, & you could enact a cheap/effective naval blockade.

Those are jet engine development years, not calendar years.

Why invade when you can get insane RoIs that exceed any threat-imposed tribute by hiring a lobbying firm?
