(The Morning Call)   Jonas Salk used his kids as test monkeys for the polio vaccine. A second dose was injected while pics were taken for March of Dimes publicity. Try and imagine this happening today   (mcall.com) divider line

Nah, we would use the kids of undocumented immigrants today.  And privatized prisons.

Jonas Brothers: curing crippling diseases since 1873.

Today's parents prefer to experiment with not vaccinating their kids to see how long it takes for formerly controlled diseases to make a comeback

Standing beside his two brothers, he braced for the injection. Two weeks later, they received a second dose while photographed to generate publicity for the March of Dimes, which was pumping millions of dollars into polio research.

"The point of that was to demonstrate my father's confidence in the vaccine," Salk said. "But ... it was also, from my father's side and my mother's side, 'Let's get these kids protected.'"

Luckily for the Salk kids their father wasn't a very stable genius and it never occurred to him to give them bleach injections.

Someone I knew who was VP of marketing at "a major pharma company", told us a story.  They were about to proceed to an initial phase I clinical trial and the CEO was throwing a big catered dinner party where everyone VP or above got a dose.
The evening ended with ambulances and vomit covering the floor.  Now that's leadership.

Why would it be unacceptable? Anti-vaxxers experiment with their kids health and well being all the time and it's acceptable...

Also unacceptable today: He actively refused to patent it.

/March of Dimes paid for it.
//I wonder who's paying for the Covid research at universities?

At least he wasn't injecting them with Lysol.

I have been to many parties that ended that way.

I didn't ask.  He did ingest a development batch of drug we were working on, and that was also pretty crazy.

Unlike the cowardly parents of today, who refuse to have their snowflakes injected with a highly questionable, possibly lethal vaccine.

So weak.

This is one of the guys eradicated polio thanks to the lawless state of health care at the time.
He tried to do the same for aids, but He was stopped by the need for liability insurance.

There's a lesson in there.

/the vaccines we have for corvid-19 can't be deployed due to regulations and liability.
/the wait for testing means the virus will probably mutate before they're approved.

Are you really so ignorant of the science that you think the reason we don't have an HIV vaccine is the need for liability insurance?

That's not the reason.  In fact, simply knowing how the virus copies itself within a patient is enough to understand, at a basic level, why there is no vaccine.  Jonas Salk could have been given free rein to test anything he dreamed of in AiDS patients for 50 years and he'd probably fail with that one.

No it doesn't. Let's not confuse vaccine safety with the Leroy Jenkins approach. Salk was able to test his vaccine on human cells. See Henrietta Lacks.

You don't go from dismissing the attempt to making a breakthrough without (literally) breaking a few eggs.
He believed it was worth testing but this was a significant roadblock to that. Maybe he was wrong, but the guy who made a career out of creating vaccines didn't buy into the basic level science against it. He was held back by a bank that knows nothing about science.

BullBearMS: Ummm... After animal testing, giving an initial dose to healthy people to see whether or not yhe vaccine is safe is still how the initial safety testing is done today.  Although we tend to use adults and get informed consent today.

To test for safety and efficacy, every vaccine goes through three phases of trials:

Phase one is the safety trial. A small group of healthy volunteers gets the vaccine candidate. You try out different dosages to create the strongest immune response at the lowest effective dose without serious side effects.

Once you've settled on a formula, you move onto phase two, which tells you how well the vaccine works in the people who are intended to get it. This time, hundreds of people get the vaccine. This cohort should include people of different ages and health statuses.

Then, in phase three, you give it to thousands of people. This is usually the longest phase, because it occurs in what's called "natural disease conditions." You introduce it to a large group of people who are likely already at the risk of infection by the target pathogen, and then wait and see if the vaccine reduces how many people get sick.

After the vaccine passes all three trial phases, you start building the factories to manufacture it, and it gets submitted to the WHO and various government agencies for approval.

Koprowski proceeded to test his Polio vaccine on 20 children at Letchworth Village for mentally disabled children, in Rockland County, NY

Koprowski reported the results of his Letchworth studies at a 1951 conference of major polio researchers, attended by both Salk and Sabin. When Koprowski announced that he actually had tested a live vaccine in children, many conferees were stunned, even horrified. Sabin shouted out: "Why did you do it? Why? Why?"

Recall Sabin's public outcry in 1951 when Koprowski announced that he used institutionalized children to test his polio vaccine. In 1954, Sabin sought permission to do the very same himself; asserting to New York state officials: "Mentally defective children, who are under constant observation in an institution over long periods of time, offer the best opportunity for the careful and prolonged follow-up studies..."

Seems about right. I used to work at Sears Portrait and people were always bringing their kids in for pictures right after getting shots. Then I was supposed to make these kids smile.

1) I'd trust Jonas Farking Salk over any of the Rump morons in power any day and
2) I'm more than willing to bet that Mr. Salk wasn't risking his kids, because he'd done the work.
3) Related to two, i'm sure he did that because, even now we're a Country of Morons who need convincing.

And finally, Salk didn't patent his discovery. He could have made billions, but wanted it available to everyone.

So, Salk = Awesome
Today = Bulls##it.

Just because his grave doesn't get regular visits doesn't mean he's unremembered.

-every biologist and doctor knows who he is
-he has a world class institute named after him
-the polio vaccine story gets told and retold in many classrooms
