While I'm happy that my neck of the woods isn't doing things like the Swedes, I don't think they're doing this because they're reckless or stupid. I think they've run the number and decided they can cope with the fall out. We'll know in a year or two how successful they were.

Wow, I was under the impression they were going all out on all the other best practices, to make up for the fact that they did hardly any closings. Guess not.

We shall see, but I do not think this will turn out well for them.

I was supposed to go to Stockholm at the end of May for a week's vacation.  Doesn't look like that's gonna happen.

My flight was canceled and refunded, so that's taken care of; the hotel room was a nonrefundable, advance payment rate, but if I have to eat a few thousand kronor because Sweden has become a realm of pestilence and woe, well then I think I'm OK with that.

Well, I just walked down Danforth, one of Toronto's most important streets.

Every single Lyft and Uber driver had a mask around their neck but not face. They park in the streets north and south of Danforth and wait for calls. They have no face covering between calls. So they are going to be a vector that undermines all of our quarantine efforts.

Since Uber and Lyft have decided to avoid all liability and all legal regulation, I imagine the only way to stop that is to arrest the drivers until Uber and Lyft shut down their apps. but that ain't gonna happen because Trumplike people are in charge of key desks throughout our police and provincial government.

There is no social distancing happening in restaurants. Foot traffic is down, but the restaurants have people in crowded lines inside and outside.

Toronto is about to get a second wave. Thanks to Uber and Lyft infecting people who are trying to quarantine (and avoid the TTC subways and streetcars for grocery shopping etc) and the restaurants letting people crowd around while they wait for take-out, we will be screwed.

It isn't Doug Ford's fault. Doug is on tv every day pleading that we maintain lockdown. This is the fault of people saying warm weather kills the virus (despite the fact that Spain and Italy were overcome by infections in sunny outdoor cafes and sport events).

It wasn't like this last week. Something really big happened between then  and now to get people out of the house and I am not sure what.

Foot traffic is way, way down, but east Toronto is in big trouble. Danforth looks like that picture of Sweden in the article.

It has no cases the same way some guy on TV a while back said we'd soon have no cases. Where'd that dimwit go anyway? He's probably too ashamed to show his face after saying such dumb shiat.

I saw an interview with their chief medical officer. He believes isolate is just delaying the inevitable. He is only suggesting measures that ensure the ICUs are not overwhelmed like in Italy, Spain, and NYC. Anything else is just avoidance of a reality all countries will have to face.

I am not saying he is right. That is just his belief on the most effective way to manage the pandemic for Sweden.

Time will tell whether Sweden's response was the right one. It's not totally unreasonable to think that if the medical capacity to care for people who are actively showing symptoms is there, might as well expose everyone, because they're likely to get exposed eventually anyway.

There are obviously a lot of issues with the above approach, including that it just seems inhumane to vulnerable populations, but we haven't seen the full economic, mental health, and social impact of social distancing, either.

Well, at least this puts a dent in the "we can't do universal healthcare because we're more (diverse) than Scandinavian countries". (for the implied meaning of diverse).

Turns out our diversity is the same as theirs - there's a big group of idiots in the middle/south.

Remember how many pro-government run healthcare people first said how covid showed that it proved the failings of private healthcare. (Which ironically they used examples of some countries that use private/public healthcare)

I said that had nothing to do with it. It was a leadership issue and being prepared that the healthcare system didn't have that much to do with the spread. What was needed was testing and locking down people. Yes people need their Healthcare but how that was provided was not some driving factor.

Italy has WHO's 2nd rating for best healthcare and they were having people just die.

A country with shiatty handling of covid transmission is going to have it's healthcare sector overrun no matter how it is being paid. But people wanted to push their ideology over reality.

(and before I get the normal attacks. Now where here did I say one was better than the other. All I said is ANY system will get over run if you handle the transmission poorly and covid is just proving shiatty response to it and not being ready for a pandemic gets you screwed. )

Yeah, I read an interview with him where he was talking about herd immunity. Not every virus results in acquired herd immunity, and many are only short term immunities. But he put all of Sweden's eggs in that one basket. Since there is still no evidence for it (according to WHO), and a lot of strains of nCov-19, that seem like a bet that is slowly beginning to lose.

Swedes might win, in a way, if it turns out there is a long term acquired immunity in people who get it. Maybe.

They may both be bad, but not in the same way. Bad as Sweden is, they do have a social safety net to absorb things. The American response is just stupid across the board.
