What does the US gun lobby have against the lockdown anyway? Do they not realise that if millions of people die from the virus, there'll be fewer people either to buy guns or to shoot them at?

I think they're also against anything that reduces ammo usage.. like staying at home and not shooting people.

MorgothsDishwasher: And, behind the gun lobby, Vladimir Putin?

It's going to be interesting to see what happens if the combined effects of the COVID-19 outbreak in Russia and the collapse of oil prices really seriously threaten Putin's survival, or even lead to his downfall.

I don't trust anyone who'd take over in that case any more than I trust Putin, but at the same time, I can't help thinking that it wouldn't be good in at least some ways.

The gun lobby has absolutely nothing against the lockdown, specifically.  For the past several decades they've primarily been a funding/advertising wing of the Republican Party that is not bound by the more restrictive aspects of election & fundraising law.

Now, even with that said, during normal times, the gun lobby would probably just quietly sit this one out for two reasons. One: the people who run the gun lobby are anything but stupid, and surely realize that when this whole Trump train derails, they are going to need as much cover as possible to distance themselves from him (especially when it comes to the coronavirus stuff).  Two: If the gun lobby has any sort of political philosophy, it is heavily rooted in the whole textualist, federalist, states rights stuff, and being opposed to local governmental control of public health policy just totally flies in the face of their long-held public positions on the10th amendment.

However, this has been happening behind the scenes for a while now.
https://www.npr.org/2020/04/21/839999178/secret-recording-reveals-nras-legal-troubles-have-cost-the-organization-100-mill

It's a long story, but basically the gun lobby leadership is involved in a huge internecine squabble and they're absolutely hemorrhaging money.  No grand political vision, just a panicked cash grab.

Furthermore, there's a pretty good chance that multiple of the parties who have thus far been bitterly fighting each other mostly behind the scenes have all sorts of dirt regarding unethical or illegal behavior.  If one or more of these parties reaches the "no-farks-left-to-give" stage, or feels like they're not getting enough of a payday on the way out, they could potentially go public and blow the whole thing up.

I live in a red state, own guns, and like to hunt and fish.  As such, a notable amount of my on-line and real-life friends and acquaintances have political views that are very...different from mine.  I was also rather involved in competitive shooting as a youth and even had an NRA membership for a time.  Many years later, I'm still on those mailing lists and get the political and fundraising literature.  I'll spare you all the details, but even in normal times these are all a steady source of cognitive dissonance, which I am long-accustomed to seeing.  These days it's just truly mind boggling.

2020-04-25 11:08:29 AM
It's not so much a gun lobby as a gun vestibule.

2020-04-25 11:27:28 AM
They're foundationally compelled to kill as many Americans as possible. That's just what you get with fetishising a murder weapon. Kids don't join the Parrot Association and want to peck people to death; murder toys just bring out the worst in people.

/Wouldn't mind a few murderous African Greys to deal with these farks, though.

2020-04-25 11:39:11 AM
I noticed that these NRA types who are legendarily known for being anti-federal government and pro states rights are having rallies and protests targeting..... state governments.

Hmm.

I wonder why they suddenly aren't protesting the federal government anymore. They have their guns, they have their 2nd Amendment, but when it's go time... they have nothing to say. Nothing at all.

It's almost as if something has changed. What could that be?

And I wonder what they'll do when a Democratic President takes office next January.

HMMMMMMMMMMMM.

How are these protesters allowed to have semi-automatic weapons on the steps of state capitol buildings?  You couldn't do that at the White House; the Secret Service would be all over you.  How can they do it at the state buildings, or in front of governors' mansions?

So again Trump is doing the bidding of Russia in order to destroy America.

For many of the the rank and file, sure, this is about their masturbatory apocalypse/civil war/whatver fantasy.

For the leadership of the gun lobby, this (like whatever support they may or may not receive from foreign entities) is a cash grab, plain and simple.

Of the 34 website addresses registered, only 16 are linked to active pages, with five tracing back to one family in the American Midwest, the Dorrs.

Fark user imageView Full Size

These laws are not loose enough for the Dorrs, who are ultra-conservative pro-gun political campaigners active in a number of US states. Three Dorr brothers - Ben, Aaron and Chris - are especially involved in political campaigns criticizing the Republican Party for not being conservative enough on gun laws and on abortion laws. However, they are strong supporters of Trump.
Earlier this year, the  Republican Party of Minnesotadescribed them as "scam artists" who are "actually just building their own brand and raising money."

True.  However, they've always been calculatingly careful to stoke the fears of the rank and file just enough to keep them outraged, a little* dangerous, willing to protest on a weekend, and liable to open their pockets. This time, however, might be a bit different since they are currently in serious need of a cash infusion and seem to be acting a bit more recklessly than they would be inclined to in normal times.

* - "little" in this case is, of course, a relative term
