So basically WE'RE the coronavirus of Earth.

ColonelCathcart: You tell me how we *arent* the virus

Agent Smith's little spiel aside, we don't share that many characteristics with viruses.

We're much more analogous to bacteria.

DarkSoulNoHope: croesius: Any bets on how many people spout the "humans are the virus!" dreck in here?
Well when we say "save the Earth", we don't really mean it. What we actually mean is "save the ecosystem that allows humans to exist", we're selfish like that, but it still doesn't mean that money is more important than the environment since money doesn't exist without humans.

Money doesn't exist without the environment, because we don't either.     Money is ultimately created from the environment, it has no meaning without the resources to back it up, and the worship of some farking dumbasses who believe that made-up things and conspicuous consumption are "worth" what some other brain-dead   capitalist pig says it is.  And then the Consumer says, Oh boy, Oh boy, it sure is! and validates this fakery and his own besides, since he now owns things that are "worth" so much more than the stuff that OTHER guy bought.

And none of it is worth a dime when your life-supporting ecosystem collapses, because THAT'S what we needed to pay for, and it was too much work and we're too lazy, and we'd rather sit on our porky asses and condemn extremely poor people to death making things for us that are "worth"  a lot, but kill off their life support systems.  But hey, were still sitting pretty around here.  Right gang?  Why, we're the most worthy bunch of people on earth.  You can tell by how much we command to be at our disposal--4 earths, last I heard.  But by now it's probably 5, due to the further degradation of our now worthless planet and our natural, not artificially-enhanced consumption of anything that we think is "worth" anything.  Which is always more stuff, and never the earth itself, even though it produced all of us, everything we have ever used, made billions of us fat and sassy and then, like the ungrateful asshole we are, we kicked Mother Earth in the face and told her that we did it all by ourselves.

Moms pissed, and the coronavirus is just the beginning.

Mom was ranting that this means that we have to all die now because of the immense guilt of how we've been treating the planet.

I never understand where she gets this crap. I don't even think FN is pushing a narrative like that.

MythDragon: But how are we supposed to enjoy the beauty stuck inside? I really want to take a flight there and take a taxi to see it. We all should go travel to see how pretty it is without all the pollution before all the travel makes a bunch of pollution.

Baby, we did. This is the downhill slope.  Now start living with it.

croesius: That sounds more like corporate greed than humanity itself. But, what do you propose as a "cure" for humans?
Who gets the "cure" first?

Hoarders--that is, those with the money.
Maybe stop giving them all of yours, and we could get started.
Unless you're just "worth" too much, that is.  You should probably just die, since your way of thinking doesn't allow for a living planet, and we're over you.

I am, for sure.  I think most of fark would rather just keep killing everything, and kill off the future, than admit that they farked up.

Rapmaster2000: I've seen this several times though, and of all the ones I've seen, this is the worst one at the point it's trying to make.
1.  The photos aren't at the same time of year.
2.  The photos aren't the same perspective.
But this is a pretty halfass job.

Agreed.

CBS?

OK. Carry on.

Oh, so you're one of those "fake news" conspiracy eco fascists, huh? Trump 2020 pal!

Really though, I sense even a bit of filtering was done to some of those in addition to the obvious March/June comparison thing.

Ya. Okay.

You tell me how we *arent* the virus when many of us are making many more than 2.2 children, driving F350s, burning down amazon and other forests to sell wood for pennies to China, fracturing the earth to extract the last drop of oil, burning coal and stripping mountains, and being horrible farking people in general when we are in large numbers.

That sounds more like corporate greed than humanity itself. But, what do you propose as a "cure" for humans?

MAGAts, and they've lined up for the cure.

Before and after pics only really work if taken from same location.

I rather a continuum of these pictures everyday, from the same spot.  Instead of showcasing undoubtedly cherry picked very bad shots with the best current shot, show what a difference smog and pollution controls have every single farking day.  Otherwise we'll get jackasses in saying that Jakarta had a bad weather system that day and you really need to look at the week before.  See, nobody needs catalytic converters, its just fake news.   Beside battery packs are the real polluters.

I've seen that or one similar.  Very telling.  I just wish we had day bay day photos from the same place.  That would 'sell' better than a graph to many people.

I'm sure there's some scenic overlook cameras around these major cities that could be time-lapsed into giving a pretty great chronological progression.
In fact, I'm fairly surprised I haven't seen any yet.

BafflerMeal: Enjoy it while it lasts.  Because people aren't changing.

/Can see about twice as far through the Black Forest compared to normal.

It might if my employer is any indication.  The lower utility bills, janitorial supply bills, snack costs, it's getting their attention.  The work goes on, but the costs have been pushed into the homes of the workers.

I can easily see the argument being made to force employees to work from home, especially if the company is only leasing real estate.  Shrink the home office down to a reception area and one conference room and make everyone double or triple up if they think about coming in.

You don't get a raise, but the gas and maintenance costs you are saving on your vehicle can go towards you paying the extra utilities bills at your home.

These pictures are mostly of different angles, exposure, distances and sometimes even different locations.
It is not very scientific at all.  NYC looks more like an illustration than a photo.
I would rather see prolonged exposures taken from the same distance at the same time of day.  There are plenty of satellite or traffic cameras that save pictures to the web that could be used for that.

dothemath: croesius: Any bets on how many people spout the "humans are the virus!" dreck in here?

Well, we are responsible for every environmental disaster. The Earth is an amazing set of self correcting processes that we try our best to fark up.

This is what folks cannot grasp. The planet and its systems are a self-correcting solar powered machine that will fix itself after almost any destruction if given enough time. Problem is that humans are not giving the machine that time to fix itself.

Take two home depot buckets, two hoses and a power drill. Start filling the buckets with water at the same rate with the hoses. Drill enough holes in bucket #1 to let the water out at the same rate as it goes in, and #2 with fewer holes. #1 reaches equilibrium, #2 spills over. That's what humans are doing to the earth's ecosystems... it's not what they are doing as much as how quickly it is being done. The systems can't absorb the damage as fast as people are causing it.

Honey I get your anger, but why are you such a misanthrope? You're a human being too, and honey, that lump of metal and plastic you're using to type your responses isn't among the most environmentally friendly things to make.

Eat vegan, wear only responsibly harvested cotton clothes, and ride your bike to work all day, but by merely existing, you are contributing to the problem. Your couch, your sheets, your t.v., the cup you drink out of, the medicine you take for anxiety, all that involves some process that extracts materials and minerals of the earth. and it's never been pretty or neat. We used to do the same shiat here. We still do it. We just exported the dirtier and overseas. You know, the shiat that actually harms the environment? So we still get what we want. We just don't get to dirty our own water as much.

We need to do better. We need to reduce our carbon footprint. But applauding the rapid demise of humanity just because you can "hear the earth silently crying," doesn't make you hyper aware, and connected to the deeper truths of the universe. It makes you sound like a whiny, misanthropic asshole with very few friends.

Get drunk, get on Tinder, and find you someone who will give until it physically hurts you. You'll feel better. It might even make you a more positive person.

ColonelCathcart: Catsaregreen: Albert911emt: No pollution means no capitalism, which means more socialism, which means things are better for people at the bottom, and slightly less better for people at the top, and that's just plain, old-fashioned communism!!1!!11

Yes, I'm enjoying this socialism right now. I've gone from making $5,000 or $6,000 a month to less than $2,000. And since I'm still working, I get no government help (I'm self-employed). Also, I've owed/pre-paid federal taxes the past few years so it'll be months before I see any sort of socialist check that will eventually bankrupt the U.S. and/or slam us with Zimbabwe-like inflation rates.

BTW, I'm sure the skies were clearer during the Black Plague - so what's your point? Should we go back to those good ol' days?

Sounds like your bootstraps aren't strong enough, Mr. Self Employed.

I'm sorry to hear that you probably don't qualify for your Obamaphone or Obamacare either because you make so much money.

You used to live a 4-5 thousand dollar lifestyle. Now you live off of $2000 a month?

Me and my disabled sister combined make 2100 a month. Don't sweat it tho. I'm still working. I'm a janitor, and happen to support essential personnel. I mask and glove up everyday. I need my money. I used my stimulus to pay bills, and then stocked up my house with groceries from delivery. I can't afford to get sick. I'm 51years old.

You can live off $2000 a month. It isn't easy, but you can. My house used to be my dad's, and I still pay mortgage, but we refinanced under my twins credit and got a crazy great rate.

I get SNAP benefits, which is Medicaid and $86 dollars a month in food stamps. My sister, who makes $13 dollars over the limit in disability payments, gets $16 a month. Sometimes I gotta call my twin, who is a nurse, and also still working, to help us out. She pays my cell phone and car insurance. She's my best friend, and has always been more generous to me than I deserve.

So here's what the financial experts tell me to do to "stretch" my money. Keep your electricity bill low. Get rid of cabl. Stop eating out, don't go to the movies or clubs very often. Don't drink or smoke, (although my gummy edibles treat my PTSD.)

Cut down on driving so much. Go to work, come home. Get used to not being able to water your lawn. And pray you have a sibling like mine, who just poured $3000 towards repairs to fix my 2007 HHR.

i have have an undergrad in Mass Comm by the way. I have a master's in Communication. Yes I got them at brick and mortar schools. I worked 11 years in my field. I've had my undergrad since 1991. I also suffer from PTSD.

Our healthcare system sucks. Our safety net is inadequate. In times of need, we should be able to turn to social services for help. But we can't rely on it. Not even in desperate times like this, even though this is what it was made for.

You never know when you're gonna need your government to step in and help you. It's funny how life works that way sometimes. Buck up honey. You will survive.

Now start clipping those coupons.

1) I (used to, now I'm home bouncy drive a plug-in hybrid

2) I recycle all my trash that can be recycled

3) I wear my clothes until they get holes in them

4) I eat responsibly grown food

5) I have had the same phone for many years

6) I'm getting solar on my house in a few months

7) I compost

8) I don't buy tons of Chinese shiat

I am not part of the problem
