Why would I wear one of those?  It would obscure my Mohawk.

dittybopper: kryptoknightmare: I know Firefly is like the internet's sacred cow but I tried to watch it a few times and it just wasn't for me. It was fine and all, but I kept finding myself talking back to the screen saying the same thing over and over:

Three space frontiersman ride up to the crew on horseback wearing cowboy hats and holding laser guns made of wood. One of them says: "Y'all best be awares that we don't take kindly to strangers 'round these parts."

Me: "It's like a western in space, I GET IT".

Then they plan and execute a train robbery...in space!

Me: "Western. I GET IT!"

Then they have a square dance in a wooden barn where everyone is dressed like Little House on the Prarie.

Me: "I ASSURE YOU I GET IT!"

And on and on. But I might be wrong, that was a really long time ago that I watched it. Should probably try again.

The whole point of the series, which you apparently *DIDN'T* get, is that the future isn't going to be like Star Trek where everybody has all of the new technology and benefits of society, but there is going to be a significant dichotomy in society just like there is today and has been throughout all of history.

The Western theme isn't an end unto itself, but a way to put that idea into a known context for the viewer.

Also, I'd like to point out that the "laser guns made out of wood" were actual "gun" guns.  You do get to see a few laser guns (and other high tech guns) in the series, but mostly people are armed with "old tech" because guns at that point are an old, reliable technology.  Hell, technically, guns are a 700 year old technology now.  A gunsmith from a couple centuries ago might marvel at the capabilities of a modern gun, but they'd be able to easily grasp their principles of operation.

Oh, and the laser guns shown don't have a scrap of wood on them.

Same thing when you see stuff like horses.  If you're on a back-assward moon on the "Rim" (ie., the outer reaches of the system) you probably don't have the cash to buy spare parts or to by a new agricultural vehicle.  Horses, on the other hand, are self-reproducing, and as long as you keep them fed and watered, they keep working.   Something like a Tesla TractorX needs technology to keep it working.  Something that's in short supply on some worlds in that universe.

It's really not that groundbreaking of a concept. Everyone got it. Most people were bored with it after 2 episodes.

PanicAttack: It was a product of its time.

Every TV show is a product of its time.  This is a silly argument.

I mean, I'll watch stuff like The Twilight Zone and appreciate it for what it is.  I don't harp about the silly special effects or the sometimes trite and formulaic stories.

I just sit there and imagine this is a line in a porn film:

Then what are you whining about?

Also, you clearly didn't watch that closely, based on your "laser guns made out of wood" comment.

You seem pleasant

Generally, I am.

I usually suffer fools in silence, and with politeness, in person.  Online?  Not so much.

Having said that, if you've taken offense, I apologize.  However, I must point this out:

Is this satire? Are you a parody? Because that's the only way this isn't the most pathetic thing I've ever seen

Maxwell Smart: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Chief: I don't know. Were you thinking: 'Holy shiat, holy shiat, a swordfish almost went through my head'?

I would think something very similar to this, except remove the world "almost", and obviously replace head with chest
