"We talked about how academics and college athletics were inseparable."

No really stop laughing we are serious!

If it possible that the only place the Trump administration can feel at home with an equal group of lying scumbags it is the NCAA.  Plus the NCAA has managed to retain their slave labor population something the Trump administration only dreams of doing.

The SEC will open on time, insist on packed stadiums, and most of the student body will happily comply.

SEC student attendance has dropped yearly in the last generation due to many factors, and coaches don't understand that one factor is due to cupcakes.

Sorelian's Ghost: "We talked about how academics and college athletics were inseparable."

While I don't for a second believe they truly see it that way, they have to remain beholden to their language if they're going to continue to use it, since it's at the core of all their legal arguments. In a way, it may or may not cost them now.

AuralArgument: So are the Republicans going to state that universities are essential services?

I very much wouldn't put it past them to try to make all students go back to school for a silly reason that only benefits a few rich people (isn't that kind of in line with their overarching philosophy of making everyone do things for silly reasons that only benefit a few rich people?), but you're going to have a lot of trouble telling university presidents and staff they have to insist upon bringing kids back, and I think the system falls apart unless there's complete buy-in that it's safe to come back.

Furthermore, a number of universities are not only telling kids to stay home but saving dorm space if needed for hospital overflow. If there's any risk of a second wave that might strain healthcare systems again, they're not going to want students around for it.

Humanity found a way to climb out of the primordial ooze and live without college football until the last 150 years. We can find a way to do it again for a year.

And this was Tennessee's year. Oh well, just give them the crown.
