(DCist)   Good news, everybody (really): Virginia cities now have the authority to take down confederate statues. And they're gonna convene a commission to consider whether or not they want Robert E. Lee's statue in the US Capitol any more   (dcist.com) divider line

"Virginia has the second-most Confederate memorials of any state, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. (It has 110 to Georgia's 114). Many of the statues were erected in the late 1800s and early 1900s during a time of heightened public interest in Civil War commemoration [during Jim Crow]."

They should all blown up.

No more memorials to traitors.

Northam was the "he's no better than a Republican" candidate during the gubernatorial primaries. Periello was the progressive one. And yet, an entire raft of progressive policies have been signed into law: nonbinary identifiers on driving licenses, universal background checks and one-gun-a-month limit, no voter ID... they're planning on raising the minimum wage and allowing teachers to unionize.

Because he's no better than a Republican. Just like Biden will be.

Good. And where every one previously stood, a six-sided die shall be rolled to determine what statue is built in its place. One possible slate of options:

1-African American (notable individual or themed statue)
2-LGBTQ American (notable individual or themed statue)
3-Native American (notable individual or themed statue)
4-Abraham Lincoln
5-the Roman figure for virtue, Virtus, as depicted on the Virginia flag (with breast exposed)
6-Greta Thunberg

You'll be pleased to know that there is serious discussion about how to handle the Confederate statues on Monument Ave., everything from enclosing them in structures designed to put them in context, putting them below street level as museum pieces, and removing them altogether. The Valentine Museum in downtown Richmond had several proposals on displays for public discussion and vote. Perhaps a monument to Heather Heyer would be warranted there, in addition to one in C'ville to replace that Lee statue there.

While I remain extremely disappointed by the blackface controversy (I mean, what the actual f*ck) as well as Justin Fairfax' sexual assault allegations, I have been very, very proud of my state of late showing the way forward in a time of darkness.

Auction them off. If the racists want them so bad they can keep em in their own homes.

Hand guide to the historicity of civil war monuments:

1850-1890 mildly racist but possibly just memorial to dead locals
1890-1920 pretty racist but it was a different time -possible historical significance in a museum in context of Jim crow era south
1920-1940 very racist
1940-1970 extremely racist
1970+ plaid levels of racism

Nah, people need to remember what they represent and understand the assholes who put them up. Remove them, put them all in a park dedicated to Black History and let scholars research, document and tell the story about them.

Destroying them allows the assholes descendants to pretend their beliefs are different than those of the past, when in fact they are the same.

If the monuments are truly important to the people who would see them stay, they can still go visit them. I bet none of them will, because they simply are not as important as they have been claimed.

The difference being that with the exception of the usual maladjusted right wing nut jobs, Germany has faced up to it's terrible legacy of Nazism, has confronted its past, and and has the appropriate laws to prevent this perverse ideology ever taking hold again.

Whereas here in the United States, we have devised redlining to create and reinforce ghettos, we have created drug laws to keep disproportionate levels of Black people incarcerated, we have allowed foul and cowardly racist organizations to flourish, we pretend the statues to subjugation are about "heritage" and we have a President who actively supports Nazis and Nazi propagandists.

So, not quite like Germany.

Maybe keeping a very select few of truly historical value. Because they have proven, time and again they're using them to facilitate their bigotry. They've weaponized these objects. Let's not make it an easy situation. They want another statue of their defeated generals? The broke-ass b*tches will have to pay for the monument AND the land.

Old and busted:

Forget everything you learned about President Abraham Lincoln. He was really a blood-thirsty despot guilty of killing innocent civilians and destroying the South.
At least that's what a few vocal Southerners say. And that's why -- 138 years after the end of the Civil War -- they are feverishly opposed to a bronze statue of Lincoln and his son, Tad, being placed at a national park in Richmond this spring, a stance that brings to mind novelist William Faulkner's maxim: "The past is never dead. It's not even past."
The war of words has become so heated that some of the sculpture's foes have used rhetoric that many other Americans might find extreme. For example, a few have likened a Lincoln monument in Richmond to a statue of Adolf Hitler in Israel or an Osama bin Laden likeness at the site of the World Trade Center.
