Presidents, dating back to the start of the modern polling era after World War II, have generally been competent.

Donald Trump isn't benefiting from what political scientists refer to as a "rally 'round the flag" effect

Most Americans realize the flag he wants them to rally around is not the American flag.

Most Presidents haven't had to deal with disasters of their own making.

As many of us foretold - his "rally 'round the flag" moment was short-lived and is now moving back to sports-team-like loyalties.  He'll be consistently back in the 41-42% range soon.

I'd get behind him. To shove him into a prison cell.

not yet, no

when you are sitting at home (or wherever) watching another being sworn in as POTUS?

Then.

He makes it worse when he allows Dr. Fauci to speak. The contrast in intelligence and competence between the two is glaring.

Dr. Fauci for Time's "Person of the Year"!

He's in the 40-45% range in all 6 polls mentioned. And dropping. As the deaths keep piling up, as the feds pull all funding from drive-through testing sites on Friday, as his press conference rallies get more and more unhinged, I can see him going below 40.

Well it is a white, blue and red flag, which is kinda like America's flag!

We shall see.  I'm not that optimistic about the critical thinking skills of Republicans.

He also equally loves the red, white and black flag that was popular in the late 1930's to the mid 1940's.

What the article actually demonstrates is more like "just like every other President in an emergency, Trump had an approval bump.  It's mostly over now."

Trump isn't a president. He's a grifter pretending to be a president. That particular charade has blown up in a rather deadly manner. Anyone who wants Trump reelected is a death cult zealot who enjoys inflicting unnecessary suffering for their own amusement. You know, republicans.

Everyone who is capable of understanding Trump is bad already knew that.

This election will, sadly, not be decided by the informed and engaged, or the hyperpartisans that made up their minds months or years ago and don't need to be informed or engaged.

The question is whether what's happening gets people who wouldn't be caught dead in the PolTab riled up enough to do something, and if they decide what to do is elect a Democrat. And not just a couple, Blue Wave numbers that can override whatever farkery the GOP is going to pull.

If they don't decide Democrats can save them, they won't bother. They'll shelter in place or put in a vote to burn it to the ground in feeble hope that what comes next will be better.

We've got to tell them we can fix this and they can help. And they are not good listeners with well-developed critical thinking skills. Their tiny attention spans are being saturated with all the hopeless, scary news they see whizzing by, and unlike the rest of us they have no idea what to do about it.

Even if we ran the best of all possible campaigns, this would be a dice roll with too many variables to predict. Don't stop pushing, don't give up... and don't do the other kind of giving up which looks like becoming so certain you're going to win you don't need to do any work.

I don't even know what "work" looks like in this situation.

We are in for a rough ride here and nothing is certain. I wish it wasn't like that, but here we are.

Our elections have been unfair, and increasingly so, since 2000. The GOP has been boiling the frog for a long time now.

There's really no comparing this to 9/11 or a war just because it's a crisis. But if he's on TV every day lying his ass off, I could see morons start to believe his lies and this winding up being beneficial to his campaign if the death toll falls below the 100,000 goal he set up for himself.

Well let's see most modern presidents didn't tell the country they would be on their own and say they take no responsibility in front of the press. And most normal presidents wouldn't let OAN anywhere near the white house press room but here we are and people get to see daily temper tantrums when he gets asked softball questions. It is probably why most people are listening to their state and local leaders and ignoring the president right now, unless they are complete morons like Trump, then they are farked.

Next time someone gets in your face about some political topic, simply retort with "BOW WOW WHITCHA BOW WOW WHITCHA WHITCHA WHITCHA". You will win, every time.

BizarreMan: Most Presidents haven't had to deal with disasters of their own making.

I notice they left Katrina off their list of disasters.

While Katrina obviously wasn't a disaster of Bush's making, he still blew it off and acted like it was a light rainstorm. Trump is following that script so closely, we're only missing the "Brownie, you're doing a hell of a job" quote.

Piggy McTinyhands is such a total failure, he makes brain-damaged Reagan and shiat-for-brains Bush the Lesser seem like Rhodes Scholars in comparison. He's incapable of capability, and pathologically unable to permit anyone else to receive any attention or credit.
