Having spent a few days in jail myself, I really don't think anyone who spent more than a few months in jail would take any offense to this joke coming from a 130 lb white lesbian.

This is just another example of people taking offense on behalf of other people.

"Woke", a term that originally meant "aware of how invisible structural racism affects everyday life", has quickly morphed in the hands of right-wingers to "lefties complaining about racism", to "lefties complaining about any issue of privilege," to "lefties complaining about literally anything," to now, apparently, "anyone complaining about anything."

People making fun of a rich lady for whining about how tough her cushioned, gold-plated, mansion-dwelling life is? That's not "OMG WOKE", that's what people have been doing -- hell, that's what Fark's been doing -- since the first zero-self-awareness celebrity first opened their mouth to complain about how hard their life is in front of a microphone.

Paul Hackett: When the "PC police" go after "liberal Hollywood elite", the world has indeed turned "upside down".

If you are pretty liberal , the liberal Hollywood elite are pretty ripe for complaints.  Hollywood liberals love democrats, abortion, gay rights, ACA, etc, but one thing they love above all that is money.  And the industry they work in and love is a mess.  The fricking US military is better racially integrated than Hollywood, the industry is full of people who do anything to not pay taxes and is a text book case of income inequality. Less than 10% of the actors make most of the money and the amount the top stars make in comparison to those who staff the food services on set would embarrass the average CEO.  And then there is the whole worship of rapists like Polanski an Weinstein.

Youtube/Instagram/Facebook comments and random people on twitter do not count as real people.  Just like with literally everything else that has supposed 'outrage', you'll know when it's real.  Generally, it isn't.

All that drives the media these days is clicks and views and for whatever reason outrage over outrage is all the rage, so they dig it up wherever they can find it, no matter how manufactured.

It was a joke. Not sure why that's so difficult for people to understand. She wasn't actually making a comparison, she was making a joke. The punchline is right there in the article.

Whether or not it's funny is a matter of taste, but there should be zero question about whether or not she was even a little bit serious, because the answer is obvious: it was a light-hearted quip and nothing more.

The only tone deaf people here are the ones complaining about this.

In some cases, sure. But look at some of the responses.

Not sharing the sense of humor is fine. I thought the joke was pretty lame, too. But it was pretty evident she wasn't claiming her life is miserable or genuinely comparing herself to a prison inmate, she was just reaching for the same "we're all stuck inside, this stinks" quips we've all been making or feeling. It may not have landed, but it's clear what she was doing.

Anyone who thinks she was making an actual comparison and wasn't just making a quip is the very definition of tone deaf.

That she is, and that's as far as she went. Does anybody have the right to expect more from her? Of course not. She also never claimed to be the leader of any community. For a brief moment, her personal interests and those of  the LBGBT community aligned and she got to capitalize and build her brand. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT either. Presently, she has an established media empire that she won't jeopardize by offending/alienating of her mainstream audience.
So describing her as "woke" is laughably idiotic. (But they already know that)

The difference being that those top ten actors wouldn't make what they make if they didn't make even more money for someone else. The minute they stop becoming a box office draw, it' straight to Lifetime. You can't say that about your typical employee fleecing golden parachute wearing CEO. Now if you want to talk about how much studio suits suck then I'm on board.

I mean, that'd be pretty normal shock humor in a random stand up act. Ellen's act is a brand that's obsessed with being g rated and inoffensive, though, so in the context she intentionally created for herself I can see where a remark that's a pretty farking shiatty thing to say wouldn't come off as being funny because it's a shiatty thing to say, just... shiatty.

Humor is 100% context, context can strip away comedy value as easily as it adds it.

Yeah, the joke was perfectly apropos as she, and all of her followers, are aware she's camped out in a 15 million dollar pad. The gay part was what I thought was funny. THAT'S how you make a joke.  Self deprecation/awareness of a situation, and still have a sense of humor. I like Ellen, and think she does, or tries to do the right thing. There, I said it. Come at me bro.

Unscratchable_Itch: Wait, you're telling me a professional comedian tried to make a joke but it wasn't all that funny? I've never seen that happen before.

It wasn't a professional comedian, it was Ellen DeGeneres.

Cagey B: Did someone make an insensitive joke? Sorry, I was too busy scraping the coronavirus out of my eyeballs while the President steals medical supplies for kickbacks. Didn't catch it.

*mic drop* This, pretty much.

This seems like a stretch for people to actually care about.  I'm sure she doesn't think it's actually the same as prison.  No one likes being cooped up though, even those in really nice homes.

advex101: blame talk radio (of all political stripes) and the 24 hour news cycle.  When you have 24 hours to fill you have to talk about something and biatching is something that people love to do.

Bslim: Nurglitch: Bslim: Oh and another thing: Ellen is about the furthest one can be from whatever "woke" is being defined here. She's always been what they call a corporate team player, not a loud advocate for anything, one of the "good ones" The pre-murders O.J. Simpson  of the LGBT community.
On the other hand it's people like Ellen that get our foot in the door. The thin end of the wedge, as it were.

Huh, I"ve never paid much attention to her politics.
So I don't care, I'm sure she will survive it. Fark, Ellen has a backbone. She was one of the first people who had a career and came out of the closet. Don't argue with me--it was a big deal. She was on the cover of Time for it.
Sure, everyone suspected anyway, but whenever that was, it took balls. Late 80s?  She was in a hit TV show at the time. And I think it slowed her down too--I think she had to go away for a few years.

dittybopper: Flappyhead: pkjun: dittybopper: pkjun: "Woke", a term that originally meant "aware of how invisible structural racism affects everyday life", has quickly morphed in the hands of right-wingers to "lefties complaining about racism", to "lefties complaining about any issue of privilege," to "lefties complaining about literally anything," to now, apparently, "anyone complaining about anything."

Which illustrates the folly of the concept from the very first beginnings.

When you make everything about racism, sexism, or whateverism, this is the inevitable result.  You don't get to biatch and moan about other people biatching and moaning when your whole raison d'etre is biatching and moaning.

This is like a kid playing with matches, then claiming he only started a small fire in his bedroom so it's not his fault the house burned down.

Not really feeling like "duh, libs, of course we can't ever talk about racism, because otherwise people are mean to Ellen DeGeneres for complaining about being stuck in her mansion" is really the level-headed analysis you think it is.

Keep in mind who you're talking to.

Keep in mind it's not people like me complaining about it, either.   I think the joke was actually pretty funny, and I didn't take offense in the least.

And I'm willing to bet that the people who complained about it vote "D" reliably, or if not, go even farther left.

Ah yes, the old chestnut that liberal minded people have no sense if humor.  Now do the one about how magazine restrictions is an assault on civil liberties.

It was the early 90's and it was a very big deal at the time.  People can downplay it but it made international news.  It was another thing that helped normalize gay culture in the 90's.

fusillade762: Mugato: This is what passes for offensive nowadays? Lighten the fark up, Francis.

I dunno, "everyone in here is gay" could be seen as a thinly-veiled prison rape joke.

Hell, I got a "will my ass be as sore as in my dreams? I hope. I hope." Deleted by a mod for being a prison rape joke despite the thread being about a guy going to Mexico for butt sex.

I guess everybody missed it in March when somebody posted a huge "Tell me your Ellen horror stories" thread on Twitter. Turns out she's a Stallone-type celebrity, the "the help is not to look at me or address me directly" kind.
