Cmdr. John Fage, a spokesman for the 3rd Fleet, said the USS Nimitz is bringing many of its sailors aboard the ship to reduce their chance of being exposed to the virus as well as to more easily monitor their health for potential coronavirus symptoms.

Y
es, by all means, lets bring those sailors back on board a ship we know to have an outbreak of Covid 19.

No. With my own country falling the f**k apart, I have no use for gloating over some other country's problems, and regard it as a deflection. Sounds like a good way to waste time, thought, and effort.

I can assure you I'm absolutely not gloating, because no one in their right mind would be.  I'm actually mildly concerned what happens when a country's military begins falling apart due to attrition, what it might cause the nation to do, and what are the consequences to every other country around it.

Midway had the potential to be a good film.  If they had stuck purely to historical persons and events, it would probably be up there with films like Tora! Tora! Tora! and A Bridge Too Far.

Throwing in that completely unnecessary star-crossed lover plot with the pilot in love with a Japanese woman and her parents being interred simple ruins the film.   And it's largely ahistorical, too:  mass internment of Japanese-Americans didn't happen in Hawaii.

If you're going to make a film about the battle of Midway, then make it about the battle.  If you're going to make a film about Japanese-American internment during WWII, make the film about that.  Mixing the two was an exceptionally stupid idea.

I mean, would A Bridge Too Far been as effective a film if there was a fictional sub-plot about the parents of Robert Redford's Jewish girlfriend being held in a Nazi concentration camp, and him attempting to rescue them?

Of course not.  That would be completely stupid.  Pearl Harbor levels of stupid, and completely unnecessary in telling the story of Operation Market Garden.

Midwaysuffers because of that subplot.

They played that goddamn movie every day on the ship's propaganda channel during deployment when I was on the Nimitz. Just awful.

Well it does get to show a lot of cool things about aircraft carriers.

I'm pretty sure the only areas shown are in Hotel Nimitz. Nothing below the flight deck.

But it did show a lot of the planes and aircraft onboard and when I was a kid it was impressive to think of all that hardware on one ship...

It's cool until you have to listen to the planes take off and land, and then realize they're mostly murdering innocent people at weddings.

There is no such thing as "Social distancing" on a ship. In the destroyer I was on, the berthing areas were very crowded. The racks were three high, and barely shoulder width apart. I'm surprised there are ships WITHOUT cv.

Just taking a flyer here, but when you are aboard an aircraft carrier, the last thing you want to see is all the cool things it does as portrayed by hollywood.

It's working as designed.   Just because you don't like who is in charge doesn't mean it's rotting.   It just means you don't like who is in charge.

I mean, you're not one of those third standard deviation wackos who think that Trump is going to declare himself president for life and suspend elections, are you?   I certainly hope not.  While we may not always see eye-to-eye, you don't impress me as that type.

We've got an election coming up in a few months, and then at the very *WORST*, you've only got a bit over 4 more years to endure.   It'll go much easier on you if every so often you stop, take a deep breath, step away from the cable news channels and political websites for a bit, and just carry on with your life instead of being perpetually enraged and outraged by what you know who who is doing all the time.

Yes, because an approximately 8,000 to 14,000 ton WWII escort carrier is an adequate simulation for what would happen to a modern 100,000+ ton supercarrier.

As someone that was on the Nimitz. Yes, it is. A modern navy should be exactly three kinds of ships. Attack subs, nuke missile subs, and conventional missile subs. The bubbleheads are right, everything on the surface is just a target.

As someone who understands the concept of "displacement" and "relative size" and the concept of "power projection", no, it isn't.

This is like someone saying back in the 1960's that we don't need bombers anymore because we've got missiles.

I'm a lot more curious about our boomers. Submarines are a lot better insulated from the virus' getting on board in the first place, but if it does get on board, subs are almost uniquely vulnerable to rampant spread and having enough of the crew incapacitated to render the sub ineffective. And it's a much bigger deal to return to port.

What would happen to them in the first 30 days of the next war? There's what we want to happen to them, and what the other side will have in mind.

In a fight with a modern military, they would try to keep the carriers as far away from action as possible. They'd try to establish air superiority and have anti sub patrols, but that wouldn't do any good. Anti sub measures don't really work, because even if you do find a submarine, they'll just run away. All the detection technologies are essentially acoustic, so the sub will know if they've been found.  The carriers would be targeted by submarines or antiship missiles. The ships have limited antimissile capabilities, but can be easily overwhelmed by multiple targets. Hell, a supercarrier can be sunk by a determined crew of a speed boat if it could get close enough while shrugging off machine gun fire. But in all likelihood, they would just torpedo the carriers and all other vessels with submarines. Subs constantly win wargames when allowed to perform realistically. The US has only been able to maintain the myth of naval superiority, because we've never faced off against a modern military. Look at the USS Cole, that was little more than the aforementioned speedboat. Every ship in the navy is a glass cannon.

What do you think those 80+ aircraft on the carrier use as fuel? And where do you think that fuel is stored? L O farking L. JP5 don't give a shiat about displacement or relative size. Jesus farking christ. I'm pretty sure I can't tell you where the storage tanks are, but they're not safe. I had that shiat in my drinking water.

Underestimating other nation's military capabilities is a form of American arrogance that has gotten us in deep shiat before.

Here's the thing about modern warfare and carriers. They're not valuable. Modern carriers don't have armor and are easily sunk by submarines. They're purely for show and would be completely useless against an adversary like China or even Russia. One thing I learned during battle control drill was to get ready to kiss my ass goodbye if we were ever attacked.

Well, no and yes.  I was on the Carl Vinson back when the Lincoln went into service.  The Lincoln had a deeper draft due to kevlar armor at the waterline and downward.  All subsequent carriers were to be outfitted with kevlar and the then-current carriers would be refitted during overhauls.
