I haven't missed it. Very few ads. Far less repetitive Fark Poltab stories.

With any luck, we'll come out of this refocused on the truly important stuff.

It needs to be limited to 90 days before election and funded by the government.

COVID-19 is the only thing that might actually influence the election. Pre-pandemic does anyone really believe minds were going to be changed? Everyone had already chosen sides and there is no middle ground. Maybe enough people dead, unemployed, or destitute will actually change some minds. As tragic as it is, COVID-19 might be what saves this country.

/But probably not

Normally less campaigning would be a good thing, but in this timeline it's not exactly great there's no presence running counter to Trump's constant TV appearances.

Y'know, out of all the shiat that's happened so far, I think we should keep this one somehow. I don't know specifically how you'd truncate campaign season without breaking something useful like mud-slinging and digging out closet skeletons, but for now, let's pickle this particular slice of 2020.

It's easy to truncate. Just cut out everything after the decimal point.

The Trump MAGAts aren't going to vote for a Democrat even if Trump personally came to their house and gassed their entire family. COVID-19, mass death and an economic collapse aren't going to change their minds.  I'm seeing that in the Trumpers in my orbit.  They'll believe whatever it takes to justify their unwavering support, even if it's wildly at odds with reality, because it was never about reality at all--it's about faith, and there's no arguing with faith. Even if it directly harms them and those close to them.  That's about 40% or so of self-identified conservative voters, which is about the floor of this administration's approval rating.

What it MIGHT do is galvanize opposition from the left, and among those undecideds who voted third party or just stayed home in 2016.  The ones who weren't redcaps, Those are the ones who will decide this election.  Those are also the ones that this administration will be fighting hardest to keep away from the polls in November. Conservagelical Republicans don't win elections very easily when EVERYONE shows up at the polls, remember?

Not only do ratings-$$$ CNN etc let him do this, but they let him actively suppress information such as when Dr. A was asked about the effectiveness of Trump's malaria fantasy.  Trump didn't let him answer.

I swear I will never talk to a Trumper again after the 100k+ people die from his willful ignorance.

I like the UK way, I thibk it is 6 weeks total. Granted, they have a lower population, but the only losers if it was shortened here would be .... ad companies. We could save perhaps 500 metric tons of paper alone.

(1) Making limits on campaign season runs smack dab into the First Amendment, on free speech and free association grounds.  The government telling people that they cannot talk about politics and/or get together with like-minded people for a political purpose is rather clearly directly against RAW and RAI of that particular piece of the Constitution.  And ultimately, candidates, whether challenger or incumbent, are private citizens when campaigning.  Gagging them for political speech is going to require some rather heavy lifting.  And any limiting is going to inevitably require the government to tell someone they are not allowed to talk politics in public.  You really want the current crop of Yertle judges - the median of which thinks the Federalist Society is a pinko commie hippie commune - to be deciding what is allowed political speech?

(2) UK elections are parliamentary, which is much different than US elections.  You are voting more for a party platform over there than you are for the particular idiot standing around with the giant Best In Show Butter Churner ribbon on.  Party membership is a rarity, requires you pay for it, and requires yo hew much closer to the party line than anything the Us has.  Hell, we routinely have candidates from a particular party running against pretty much the entire party ethos.  6 weeks is fine when you are just sizing up someone who is going to vote a certain, known way 99% of the time.  Trying to suss out someone who's plans can be wildly divergent from any sane reading of the party platform is a longer-term process.

Seriously, what subby said.  Most civilized nations can run an election in two or three months.  The US is a fairly large area, so I'll give it a bonus month, make it four tops.

There is zero reason to have it run 15 months.
