Technically being dead is a stable condition too...

I am pretty sure that he will be dead for two days and they will be saying "the PM has been released from hospital; his condition is stable; he's in good spirits, feeling no symptoms, and doctors are now confident his case will not worsen."

I read on BBC that 2/3 of ICU patients with COVID ended up on ventilators, and we know what the survival rate is for that.

He's just hogging an ICU bed as a precaution. Probably blocked off a whole wing for him.

Yeah. We're running at about 10% fatalities because we didn't lock down early enough and we don't test and trace extensively.

Welcome to your world of tomorrow.

If it makes you feel any better, the US is probably significantly underestimating the actual death toll.

I'm not sure why that would make anyone feel any better, but there it is.

"He's more machine now than man."

One of my friends told me that the current guidelines at their facility are to prepare for intubation if a patient is on 6 L per minute of O2 by nasal cannula. There are normally several steps between that and intubation. Being in the ICU on oxygen is probably not a good sign, ventilator or not, government official or not.

6L/min by cannula is standard for anyone on O2. If you're in the ICU, you're almost by definition on oxygen. Perhaps you misunderstood a step.

No one else seems to see the UK's abyss between recoveries and deaths. It's 1 recovery for every 45 deaths. Every other country is just the opposite - far more recoveries than deaths.

That's about the max for nasal cannula. People who just need a bit of extra oxygen are often on 2-4 L/min. After that you're looking at various masks, maybe CPAP or BIPAP if they need more support, high flow oxygen, various other respiratory therapy interventions. Going straight from nasal cannula to intubation is not normal, but that's apparently become the recommendation at my friend's facility.

I'd be interested to hear what the protocols are elsewhere though.

It's all fuzzy numbers and best guesses right now. It's very likely none of the number reported are even close to accurate for anyone. I promise, the US is farking things up just as badly as the UK. There's no need to compete over who's worse. Both countries are run by incompetent government and largely populated with complete morons.

The US and UK have been following an amazingly similar path over the past few years, always trying to one up each other by making the worst possible decisions. Sure, the US got Trump before the UK got Boris but the UK actually left the EU based on a misinformation campaign and raw racism. Now, as is American tradition, the UK will hold our beer as we re-elect Trump for another 4 years. Then it's your move, UK.

I'm impressed with how it's progressing in Australia at the moment.  2547 recoveries and 49 deaths.  Considering half of cases are probably not reported (no symptoms or mild symptoms), then that is about a 1% death rate.

The UK is pretty much only testing frontline care workers and people admitted to hospital, and they're only admitting you to hospital if you need oxygen treatment. If you only have a cough and fever and shortness of breath, you'll never show up on the figures.

pkjun: The UK is pretty much only testing frontline care workers and people admitted to hospital, and they're only admitting you to hospital if you need oxygen treatment.

To be fair, nobody is admitting you into a hospital for COVID-19 treatment until you need oxygen - one, there's not enough beds, and two, other treatment for those still oxygenated can be done outpatient.

But yes, the only testing sick is underplaying the numbers. I think we're going to be surprised when we do get an antibody test and find out how many were exposed.
