Yeah, coal miners are considered essential workers because about 15% of America still gets its electricity from coal plants.  That's way less ridiculous than my factory being open... we're considered essential because we supply hardware stores... not with stuff that people need to do emergency home repairs, but I guess people stuck at home might think it's a good time to insulate their attic...

I don't know.  Give it a while and I suspect America is going to take a hard turn left.  The economic impact of shutting down the US economy is going to be the worst since the great depression, and a lot of people are already wishing they had some sort of safety net... it's also mostly killing the elderly, and the president has visibly done a piss poor job reacting to it.

I'm sure the Democrats will find a way to farking everything up in the court of public opinion though.

Or they need to repair their insulation in an area of their roof that has been damaged by a storm. We have hurricane season and all of the Summer thunderstorms with their included tornadoes to look forward to before this is all over. Not to mention an entire winter as well since we are looking at 12-18 months for the vaccine. You're still vital. Be glade because a lot of businesses that aren't have their workers being laid off and are looking at bankruptcy unless they are in the magic orange bailout of donating to moron Don's new scheme to get rich quick; get re-elected.

Pre-existing lung issues mean you're at greater risk for respiratory diseases, yes.

Did this... really necessitate an entire article of its own, to explain something a five-year-old who's never so much as been to a doctor in his entire life that he remembers could logic together with ten seconds of basic common sense?

I guess all HuffPo's reporters are in quarantine so they're not actually receiving any real news.

I seem to remember 40 years back that there was a big fuss over Black Lung, the way the miners were treated and the billions the coal companies made off the backs of the miners. I thyought things had been improved drastically, but, apparently not. They've treated the miners poorly since mining for coal began, done billions of dollars of damage as coal slurry catch basins collapsed and flooded communities downstream, built these catch basins poorly and were the originators of the 'Company Town' where the Company owned everything the miners needed to live. They became so powerful, that the companies swung a major amount of political weight -- all in their favor.

Mining coal in America has been like working in the deepest pits of hell and few people with the power to do anything about it cared to. It has been a damn dirty job. Heavily polluting getting it out of the ground and heavily polluting to use in industrial quality. Even the burnt out ash is deadly. It can make the creeks and streams of the area run black.

A coal fire is what has destroyed the city of Centralia and is still burning today, deep under ground.

There has not been a correlation proven between lung issues and contraction of Covid-19.

However, it has been shown being male correlates to a much higher mortality rate.

Of course, she also consciously used a "pied-piper" strategy to increase the chances of Two Scoops becoming the Republican presidential candidate, because she believed - correctly -that he was the person she would most likely be able to defeat.

Of course, that ran the risk of losing and an imbecilic, malevolent, narcissistic man-child seizing control of the machinery of state. President Cruz or Bush or any other rider in the Republican clown car would have been bad, yeah, but nothing approaching Trump.

It was a gamble which increased the chances of her victory, at the cost of unthinkable destruction and suffering should she fail.

Which she did.

Not too smart, eh, Hillary?

My granddad had black lung and was retired on payments for it all his life. This was unusual for his area though legally required because a doctor had to certify the condition and the doctors were paid by the coal company not to.  They were ticked by wartime Selective Service classifying 4-F because of it and it having legal effect.

WTF you talking about? If you're talking about the virus, SARS-CoV-2, then yes, no one is immune. But the disease,COVID-19 affects those with lung issues and other underlying health issues to a significantly greater extent.

Heh, we actually make hurricane rated roofing adhesives among other things.  But we could produce that product, as well as enough stuff for emergency repairs with a skeleton crew.  The bulk of our customers are new construction/rehabs, and I see that slowing down in the immediate future.

My point wasn't that we're not essential, just that we're not as essential as people producing electricity right now.

Once again, these f*cking selfish assholes want to be treated like they're special snowflakes. Just a gentle reminder that from 1936 to 1996 West Virginia voted for a Dem for president in 12 of 15 elections, including in 1980! It wasn't until the coal mines started shutting down and people started losing hope that the voting record changed. If you want to bring them back to the Dem side figure out a way to bring jobs that will support a family back to the area. It might take a generation of flying planes full of cash to prop up their schools and other social institutions, but it can be done.
