"Ain't No Sunshine" was the first song to ever make me cry. It's still my lead-off hitter in my "Blue Period" playlist, and I just might listen to it right now. RIP sad song man

Q: How do you make a duck a soul singer?
A: Put it in the oven until its bill withers.

My dad's favorite joke. One of my favorite singers. Sucks man...

We lost a true Great today.  Bill Withers impacted my musical growth more than any other artist.  He was a good man who cast a long shadow.

Rest in peace as the Angels give you a standing ovation.

Youtube YCnVrjdgyAk

I was at this concert. Stevie Wonder inducted Bill Withers into the RRHOF. They edited out the bit at the beginning where Stevie Wonder started playing in the wrong key then re-started. He joked something like, "I couldn't read the music."

Wallace Roney, Ellis Marsalis Jr., Bucky Pizzarelli, and now Bill Withers. What a shiatty week.

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with "Sunshine." There was a period back in the mid-to-late 90's when every two-bit "producer" would bring his latest ... protégé in to the studio to record a demo, which invariably included a rendition of "Sunshine." I must have played on at least twenty awful versions of that wonderful song.

Bill Withers - Grandma's Hands
Youtube qv5pagal-ls

Grandma's hands  Clapped in church on Sunday morning
Grandma's hands  Played a tambourine so well
Grandma's hands  Used to issue out a warning
She'd say, "Billy don't you run so fast"  "Might fall on a piece of glass"
"Might be snakes there in that grass"  Grandma's hands  Grandma's hands  Soothed a local unwed mother  Grandma's hands  Used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands  Used to lift her face and tell her She'd say, "Baby, Grandma understands"
"That you really love that man"  "Put yourself in Jesus' hands"  Grandma's hands
Grandma's hands  Used to hand me piece of candy
Grandma's hands  Picked me up each time I fell
Grandma's hands  Boy, they really came in handy
She'd say, "Matty don't you whip that boy"
"What you want to spank him for?" "He didn't drop no apple core"

....But I don't have Grandma anymore  If I get to Heaven I'll look for- Grandma's hands

This makes me sad.  I only discovered Bill a few years ago.  He's not my usual sort of music at all, but I love his stuff.

/World Keeps Going Around has one of the best bass lines ever.

Bill Withers is one of those songwriters who was way more popular with musicians than he was with the public at large, which isn't to say he didn't have a dedicated fanbase.  When I was deeply involved in the Denver local music scene in the early 2000s, there were I think at least 5 bands active in different genres that covered "Use Me."

Pretty sure I saw this article through Fark originally.

Yeah.  My mediocre cover band played this as a special request during our last show on 2-29-20. I can't stop thinking about that night, and what a different time/world it was compared to now.  I learned/listened to this song so much leading up to that night...

One of my all time favorite opening lyrics:

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I wanna spend some time with you

Farewell Bill. Thanks for the music

Yup.  There was a disc that featured the originals that Fatboy used on several different songs that brought me to "Left Handed", now one of my favorite BW songs.  Norman knows his music.

Well, this news certainly sucks. Besides being the best thing to ever come out of Slab Fork, West Virginia, Bill Withers not only stands tall as one of the best singer-songwriters of his time, but a truly fine man who encouraged and supported his fellow stutterers throughout his long life. May he rest in peace today, and may his family know the joy of his memory and all of the beautiful music he left behind.

Goodbye, Mr. Withers. You not only wrote part of the soundtrack of my youth, you let me lean on you enough to learn that all of us are stronger when we live and work together than by trying to do everything alone.

\ hoping you see your grandma's hands again

I first heard the name Bill Withers in my early 20's, but i had unknowingly heard all of his hits by then. And what songs they were.I'd heard "Use Me" "lean On Me" and "Ain't no Sunshine," unaware that they were all by the same person. Taken individually they're all impressive solid songs. But realizing they are just a few of many by one person, mindblowing stuff.
He not only wrote his stuff but also played many instruments, produced and engineered his own albums. He only produced one album that wasn't his (aside from two tracks for the Pips)

RIP funk-soul God.
