And may be deadlier than all US wars combined before it's over.

Don't worry, we'll be having 9/11s every day soon.

What an odd metric to measure this by. A 'war' that's been going on for closing in on twenty years, the last few as far as I can tell just to keep feeding the MIC (while averaging 12-15 deaths/yr for those few years.

Compared to a pandemic that is just starting to get it's feet under it.

It's like comparing apples to Jamaican steel guitars

Well, there are more apples in the world than steel guitars, so...Chexmix math, Lib!

Math!

But at such a bargain compared to the war!

Do they come pre-adjusted for how much blame Hillary Clinton bears for this viral pandemic?

/ I heard Hillary Clinton was spotted in a Wuhan market just before the first cases, spitting on people. Study it out!

Covid-19 is serious business but this is a shiat article.

Might as well have been "Annual Flu kills more people than 9/11 + Iraq War + Afghanistan War Every Year!"

You mean blowing up farmers from a helicopter isn't as dangerous as a potentially deadly disease that spreads as easily as a common cold?

2020-03-30 8:11:38 AM
Maybe.  But HOW do you profit from a virus?  I'm buying up life insurance policies.  5 cents on the dollar.  My secret?  Well, you'll just have to attend on of my virtual Grifting Classes to learn.  I was like you, an out of work, sitting in his boxers farker.  Now I'm a rich, sitting in his boxers Farker!

Here's a hint:  Tell the person who is signing over their insurance policy to you that the dollar is being replaced with the Ruble.  Or anything.  Make something up, be creative and if they take cash now, they'll be ahead of the game.  Oh, don't worry about me.  I'm gonna flip all these policies as bulk and make a few pennies (hee hee) before the dollar tumbles.  And all U S insurance policies must pay in U S dollars whether they're worth a dollar or .000000000002 cents each.  Federal law!

From beyond the grave, LBJ must be thinking why didn't he pat himself on the back for only getting 60k Americans killed in the Vietnam war.

Was Afghanistan ever really a war? It's more like an occupation. Wake me up when the virus surpasses Vietnam, which they never got around to calling a war.

Isn't it weird how you spent the last 19 years humping a bunch of A-10s, but it turns out that the nerds you went to high school with are the ones who will save your life?  Not that you'll quit humping the A-10, of course.  To do so would be to admit your weakness.

This is a pointless metric. We should compare to annual gun deaths in the USA, which we've already decided is the minimum Price of FreedomTM

At the current rate, you can nap til around 4/20

2020-03-30 8:34:50 AM
One thing I haven't heard addressed in all this is how are America's guns doing. Can they be infected by this virus? Even if only a small percentage can come down with this and a small percentage die, we have more than three-hundred million guns so a lot of guns will die. If they don't get sick, what happens to them if their guardians end up infected? Are there any provisions in the two-trillion dollar bailout that will help the guns who now are stuck at home and can't go out to exercise their god-given rights?

2020-03-30 8:36:08 AM
Does that include all the suicides and drink/drugging oneself to death after their life falls apart because they came back damaged and the US abandoned them?

We've also passed the Spanish-American war to move into 11th place if we are comparing COVID-19 deaths to US war deaths...I just hope we don't take number 1 (Civil War ~750k). Number 10 is Philippine-American War at 4196 which I am afraid we will pass by Wednesday, probably sooner if Florida actually tests people.

With deaths doubling every three days (looking at last night's graph update on the Financial Times coronavirus page):

Days from today to Vietnam-level dead: Two weeks
Days from today to WWII-level dead: Three weeks

/Actually, 22.18 days, but close enough to three weeks
//If the doubling rate goes to every 4 days, just over 4 weeks to WWII
///Sad slashies

I think its used as a metric because the GOP wingnuts only seems to care about deaths from wars and/or terrorist attacks (only when brown) so people have this crazy idea that maybe if we compare it to wars they will start to take it seriously.

I'm not good with numbers, I need visualizations. So if the corpses were stacked end to end, how many times would they stretch across the Atlantic?

They would be the length of 4 CVS receipts.  So, 2.37 times.

Americans will use anything to measure with.

So long as it's not in metric.

Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if our "war president" was responsible for more American deaths than Vietnam.

Remember when you could wake up, watch the news, and not be immediately informed of half a dozen disasters that took place while you were asleep?

That was nice. I kind of miss that.

36,560 death from motor vehicle accidents.

2,813,503 registered deaths per year.

We'll be past that number in less than two weeks.

It's sick how easily we write off the number of traffic deaths now. In the past, we were horrified by it and required car companies to build safer cars, and later took action to reduce drunk driving. But now that lowering the number would mean investing in public transit, long-distance rail, and making more places walkable, allowing more people to work from home, we're like "oh well, cost of freedom I guess"

I want to know the assumptions of the model that predicts 100,000 US deaths.

The only variable we reliably know is US population - about 329 million, according to the Census Bureau.

To make the math easier, let's just say it's an even 300 million.

So... let's optimistically assume the case fatality rate is 0.5%, which is what Germany is currently reporting. 100,000 deaths = 20,000,000 cases, which means they're assuming 6.67% of the US population will be infected.

If you assume the upper bound of 200,000 deaths estimated by the White House, with a CFR of 0.5% that's 40 million cases, or 13.3% of the US population.

Now let's assume the CFR is similar to influenza, at about 0.1%.  100,000 deaths with a CFR of 0.001 = 100,000,000 cases, which means an assumption that about 30% of the US population will be infected.

I dunno, the % infected estimates seem low, but I'll admit I don't really know anything, I'm just some internet idiot doing algebra.

If only we had widespread testing of the population to do statistical sampling...

People actively die for stupid reasons.
People passively die for stupid reasons.

You can't equate the two as if it was some battle between identical forces of chaos.

Chaos is.  Get over it.  You can scrum team this bullshiat into bite-sized pieces of what the fark.

Still less expensive, though.
