(The Verge)   June's Detroit Auto-show has been cancelled as FEMA has commandeered the TCF Center to convert it into a Covid-19 field hospital. But sure, this thing's gonna be done by Easter and everything will be back to normal   (theverge.com) divider line

It was only a few weeks ago you had like fifteen cases. I should check again because you have, what, one or two cases now right?

If we are very lucky this thing could be blowing over and we can start reducing restrictions by June.

Except that America have largely resisted social distancing and it's showing a rapid increase in cases, which will increase the risk for everybody for a prolinged  period. So in June I expect American bussinness types to start travelling again and spread covid all over again.

I'm sure about the "back to normal" part, as long as there will be less Republicans involved in it.

We will have seven times as many critical cases as we have total ICU beds.   Not a good look.

Of the the things to biatch about Trump over.

He said he hopes we can open back up by Easter.  He'd like for us to open back up by Easter.  I can't find a single time where he said we WOULD open back up by Easter.  Do y'all really expect the leader of a country to say "Yeah, we're all farked for a while?" Puhleeze.

Hell, I'd like to be back to normal by Easter, I'd like to hope we will be, but I know that isn't going to happen.  Things will be much, much worse by then.  I'll be surprised if we're even limitedly open by July.

Before you chattering budgies shiatpile on me, watch this.  This is one of the funniest things I've seen.  Be sure to unmute it and then rewind it to the start.

They should've sent Trump a speaking invite a few days ago. You know he goes for the vroom-vroom toys thing, and would tweet his excitement.

As a Canadian, I support Trump putting troops on/near the border. I expect their guns pointed inward to take care of dissenters. Daddy Putin does it, big boy Trump will too! And I expect USA to pay for it.

Also, as a Canadian, I am seriously worried my southern neighbours gone down with a case of ameba brain infection.

I would debate the term largely.  Often, perhaps, but down where I live it's clear the majority of people are staying TF at home.

I sure have and have been for about 4 weeks now.  I miss my dog.  I wish I could tell her that I now understand why she'd bark when a car drove by   I barked at a couple squirrels today and then chased the cats around the house.

My wife and I have friends who are nurses and doctors in the Detroit metro area.

It's f*cking horrifying. Some of the outlying satellite hospitals in the suburbs have nearly run out of basic meds like acetaminophen (Tylenol), fentanyl, and propofol, necessitating cooperation between rival facilities and competing health systems to plug the gaps. Front-line health providers get *ONE* N-95 respirator that's expected to last for the duration of the crisis. Nurses who ordinarily work in post-surgical recovery are being drafted to work in ICUs. Techs and docs whose expertise ordinarily has nothing to do with infectious disease, pulmonology, or critical care are doing basic-level health care scut to help.

Everyone's terrified they're going to bring it home to their families, but I haven't heard of anyone abandoning their post and fleeing.

These are people I've known for 30 years, who I've worked with in Detroit-tier trauma cases (gunshots, all kinds o' blunt trauma, stabbin', traumatic amputations, limb avulsions, even a failed parachute splat), and I've never seen them so distraught.

It's f*cking real, you assholes downplaying this as a politically motivated exaggeration.

That's why I'm planting a garden.  People are fooling themselves thinking it won't last too long.  Because of capitalism demanding everyone get back to work ASAP, we will almost certainly go through at least another round of lockdowns this year, if not multiple rounds.

Meh. I'm sure it will be mostly impractical and exotic "concept" ventilators that you would never use on the street.

Even the earliest curve, the one where the most people die, don't have pre-lockdown infection levels until mid-june. The middle level curves have pre-lockdown levels in late July-August.

And that's just the first wave. Pandemics have more than one. The 1918 pandemic came and went in 3 waves over 18 months.
