Criminal organizations frequently provide services the government can't or won't. It's one of the ways they maintain support and influence in communities.

Giving the label of mafia states to Eurasian tyrannies, or countries ruled by aspiring Eurasian tyrants (like Trump or Bolsonaro), is an insult to actual mafias, whose godfathers generally know better than to kill off their prey wholesale, or allow someone (or something) else to do so.

If the Mexican cartels ran my state (Minnesota) we'd likely have zero deaths of elderly chain smokers from Covid instead of our current tally of one.

Misery acquainteth a man with strange bed fellows.

Would be Mafia Don and Tough Guy, The Donald must be shiatting bricks to lose the respect and honour of his would-be peers. As if he ever had anything to lose since his mentor, Roy Cohn, died a well-deserved death, outing him from the closets and smoke filled rooms of politics, lawyering, and various felonies.

I somewhat admire the wit of the mafia don who said "I never carry a gun, but I like to keep them close to me."

Are you talking to the Mafia Don Corleone or Dumb Don Cors-de-cowardly-lion?

I spit in his general direction.

Brazilian drug gangs are taking it more seriously than Brazil's President.

TBH, the gangs are much more imposing. The police will write you a ticket, then gang will beat you up and possibly even kill you for disobeying their orders. Who would you listen to?

I've long believed "good people" are the worst. I've met junkies with more kindness than a BBQ shop owner. And other antidotal stories. Sure, just luck. But, I'm 46. Haven't met a Bible beater with anything kind about them, yet. Hell, know one who is leaving all her wealth to Boy's Town. But, only to be ugly to her kids. Meh.

Which is odd. Money is worthless without peons. Why isn't that enough for the GOP to want us all alive?

Abstract thinking. They can't think enough connecting steps to be able to figure out that poor people are actually the source of demand. The minutes money hits their fingers it goes right back out again, thus stimulating the economy. But they've been fed so long that poors are poor because they don't know HOW to handle money, that the idea of just giving them any is abhorrent, and they don't realize that the money would actually just end up right back in their pockets.
