So this means you can panic-buy guns and ammunition without needing a lobbying organizations?  Wow.  Who would have thunk it.

One would say the NRA has almost been reduced to ruble.

2020-03-24 2:27:35 PM
Oh gee, maybe they will have to make hard decisions and stop their lobbying efforts and focus on something useful like the gun safety classes.

Don't worry NRA, soon there willbe five hundred billion dollars available to help you guys out. After all, you've been funneling money to the Republican Congress for decades so it's only fair that they return the favor.

501(c)(4) organization is a social welfare organization, such as a civic organization or a neighborhood association. An organization is considered by the IRS to be operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare if it is primarily engaged in promoting the common good and general welfare of the people of the community.[34][35] Net earnings must be exclusively used for charitable, educational, or recreational purposes.[36]

Their only hope, like everyone else's is for a Dem to be in office. They can get morons to panic buy more guns from that to stiggit to the libs than from any natural or man-made disaster.

It's even funnier since the industry is going gangbusters right now. I bet the NRA guts the worthwhile safety and educational aspects of the organization to save the political side.

"A 501(c)(4) organization is not required to disclose their donors publicly, "

When you hear about "dark money" in politics, it is 501c4s with anonymous backers. Like, just a hypothetical here, if you set up a group ostensibly for the promotion of shooting sports, and used it to funnel Russian money into US elections.

My heart bleeds. That's just another $2.2 million freely given by those who want to be taken advantage of.

The NRA has a number of fundamental problems.

They're not proactive enough for the truly hardcore gun people. When the WH website still had the Obama era petitions section up after Trump took office, there was a petition that got 300K+ signatures to repeal the NFA (law covering Machineguns/Destructive Devices/Suppressors/Short Barrels/Disguised guns/etc). At the start of Trumps term there was regulation in the GOP held House/Senate that would have removed suppressors from the NFA and advanced national concealed carry. The NRA acted on none of these things, and supported the Bump Stock ban (which was essentially done as a retroactive arbitrary agency decision) Hence the spike in the even more aggressive Gun Owners of America membership.
At the same time, they're too extreme and bellicose, and play too much in the directly partisan conservative culture wars for most everyone else. They've basically become a fundraising wing of the GOP.They've managed to get themselves tied to the GOP and Trump practically interchangeably, but at the same time turn much of that crowd off with their performance once they actually had power. Then they went ahead and opened up a circular firing squad with Ackermann-McQueen, openly revealing insane levels of graft right in the face of the membership. Not hard to see why they're failing.

How much of a gun nut does one have to be in order to believe that the NRA isn't gun-nutty enough?

BMulligan: How much of a gun nut does one have to be in order to believe that the NRA isn't gun-nutty enough?

100% serious here...this is the argument ive heard from multiple gun nuts:

a true pro-gun person knows that all guns should be legal.  any barrel length.  any attachments.  any magazine size.  full auto.  whatever.  and by supporting laws that helped restrict those things (such as the Gun Control Act, among others) the NRA has shown its true colors as a deep state gun control organization.
