The differences between political parties are stark, with a majority of Republicans saying it is overblown and the vast majority of Democrats considering it a legitimate threat

My solution is simple.  Stay far away from all Republicans.

/it's working really well so far

"Pollsters found that both shifts are largely driven by changes in opinion by Republicans. For instance, 72% of Republicanssaw the coronavirus as a real threat in early February, but that figure has now plummeted to 40% of Republicans now believing the deadly virus is a serious menace."

Gee, I wonder what changed their minds.

They somehow convinced themselves that Obama's response to H1N1 was worse so they have nothing to worry about.  Or something.

Just about 56% of Americans consider the coronavirus a "real threat," representing a drop of 10 percentage points from last month.

They do not consider it a real threat cuz they haven't died from it, much less contracted it.

Soon...

The right leaning people I know aren't convinced, and golly, they just don't know WHAT to believe so they are still going out.

My 21 year old left wing daughter wanted to go on an 800 mile road trip with a friend and wants to be able to go out with all her friends because she's missing out. Dear god... someone's going to have to die in front on her to make her take this seriously. I just hope it's not me.

2020-03-17 3:04:59 PM
Here is the screwed reality.

If we do something and take care of it people will say we overreacted.

If we don't do enough and people die then people will think we didn't do enough.

The "we take care of a situation and people think we did a good job in doing so' - is not an option.

Look at Y2K most people think that was overblown even though it was a real issue just most people got ahead of it and fixed it.

people suck.

dv-ous: "I'm not dead yet so we're obviously fine."

Right up there with "I never wore a seatbelt as a child, and I survived!"

Sure, but you know who DIDN'T survive? All the people who aren't around to tell us about it!

Instead of looking at political party, they should have just looked at Fox News viewership

This seems to be a wonderful self-correcting problem for the USA.

A majority of republican supporters will be dead, leaving the GOP & Trump with maybe 10% of their base alive to vote.

Whereas the democratic base, along with 50% of independents, will vote Trump & co. out in November.

I'm ok with this.

Everyone in my family is taking all the precautions. At this point the ones most likely to get infected are the ones not taking it seriously.

Hate to see more people die, but if you're jumping in the alligator pit... I ain't jumping after you.

The differences between political parties are stark, with a majority of Republicans saying it is overblown and the vast majority of Democrats considering it a legitimate threat.

I don't even see it as political parties any more. It has boiled down to the informed and rational, and the dumb-as-fark cult of trump. It's not political, it is the separation of the wheat from the chaff, and they are beginning to chaff me the wrong way with their dumbfarkery.
Politics is one thing, fine we can disagree, but when you are numbnut dumbfark stupid, believe this is a democrat hoax, think climate change is a plot yet kowtow to an invisible man in the sky... you are farking dangerous to everyone.

2020-03-17 3:08:31 PM
That's fine.

Tell you what, here's a deal: We record everyone's name and if they think it's a threat or not.

The people who don't think it's a threat, and don't take it seriously, are made to bear the responsibility of any and all damages to life and property that results.

The people who DO think it's a threat, and DO take it seriously, are made to bear the responsibility of any and all damages to life and property that DOESN'T result.

Seems fair to me, how about it?
=Smidge=

2020-03-17 3:08:31 PM
My bosses went from "this is no big deal, and was engineered by the Democrats and Chinese to cause panic" to "this is the worst crisis we've ever faced, and was engineered by the Democrats and Chinese to cause Trump to lose the 2020 election."

They are the dumbest people I have ever known.

2020-03-17 3:08:37 PM
I imagine part of is we have such short attention spans nowadays, where if it takes too long for the tide to roll in we get bored and forget the water's even there. The rest of it is, well, George Carlin put it best: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

2020-03-17 3:08:43 PM
Now ordinarily I'd say that, like elections, this provides a great opportunity to not bother making predictions since we'll know soon enough.

Like all the people saying 'Oh no, Biden won't beat Trump'.  You don't know.  I don't know.  But soon, we'll find out.

Here though, we're already seeing how the lack of tests make estimating the size of the problem impossible.  I imagine that, in addition to exacerbating the problem, we'll run into a similar lack of information when it comes time to tally the human cost.  I imagine (though hey, not claiming I know the future here) that the Trump administration will successfully convince their followers that the death toll was minimal, through hijinks associated with how 'cause of death' is assigned.

But when independent studies compare the normal number of deaths for a given year to 2020 - well, then we'll have an answer on how bad it got.  Then we'll know if it was a 'big deal' or not, and can of course pivot to either giving credit or assigning blame.

It's a SHAME the Donald Trump Stock Market Crash Virus Pandemic was handled so poorly by Donald Trump, but I'm sure we can get past the Donald Trump Stock Market Crash Pandemic eventually when we restore the good leadership that we had BEFORE Donald Trump and the Donald Trump Stock Market Crash Pandemic

Fewer Americans See Pandemic As A Real Threat

Kind of hard to ignore this shiat when every bar and restaurant is closed here in my town and state and we just closed our lobby to the public where I work.

Who are these assholes who think it's still a joke?

Kids that age think they're invincible.  That's different from right-wingers that don't consider it a problem because they simply reject experts.

People aren't obeying the minimum 3ft social distancing and it's driving me nuts. Literally just finished a four week cold battle and the last thing I want is to get sick again. People are side by side each other still. Some of my coworkers sat next to me like normal today at lunch. I like you guys but not that much.

Kittypie070: this too you gods damned whatevers

I don't trust take-out or delivery right now.

Why would I want to trust that the folks who prepare the food and the drivers delivering (and handling cash from God knows how many customers)?

My son and I are staying inside with no one allowed in or out of the home except for an emergency or to retrieve necessities. However, I always keep us stocked with around a month's worth of food (and much longer if proportioned right). The only thing we would lack is dairy, fresh fruits and veggies. But I always have those items frozen as well, and I buy unsweetened almond milk that has a great shelf life. I'm not a hoarder, it's just I have always shopped in bulk.

Right now that shopping habit is coming in as super useful. I could make our provisions last anywhere from 60 to 90 days, if I needed to.

The Democrat cites, history, science and numbers. The republicans "feel" that it's overblown and are more concerned about money.

My wife's parents, each closing in on 80, *finally* decided to basically shelter in place, and eschew outside contact for the next 8 weeks.
My guess is this is because a friend of theirs works for CDC, and is in a position to have actionable info. As recently as this weekend, her father was getting ready to go away for a week and would have been around people from all parts of North America.
Yes, they listen to conservative talk radio and I suspect voted against Hillary, either by voting for Trump or leaving that part of the ballot blank.
