Your not the boss of me.

Meh.  I use it for throat sanitizer anyway.

you can use vodka, or any alcohol, it just has to be >120 proof (60%)

we know of Barcardi 151, Balkan Vodka is 176, Everclear also makes a 120 proof grain alcohol

I'm sure there are more

Once I drank a Jager bomb with 151 instead and instantly threw up.

It works in a pinch after you bang the ladyboy whore who hangs out behind the bowling alley in your 1998 Chevy Cavalier at 2 o'clock in the morning on a Wednesday.

Or so I've heard.

If you have enough vodka, you no longer care about stupid hand sanitizer

I thought that Bacardi stopped making the 151.

If you don't care about taste or local laws, it's easy enough to distill alcohol using regular kitchen equipment. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a big bottle of cheap vodka which could be upgraded to hand sanitizer proof if needed.

I've been using gin to wipe down my thermometer in order to conserve my soap.

Nice. I was wondering when the run on liquor stores would start. We can use this news to make a nice Facebook rumor that the government has taken over the Jack Daniels distillery and is forcing them them to make hand sanitizer for the Post Office. That should do the job nicely.

I'll take my hand sanitizer on the rocks and internally please.

From what I gather real soap is better at killing this virus anyway.

But for on the go I use a mixture of 91% isopropyl, some vinegar, and some witch hazel. Haven't mathed out my mixtures to get to 60% alcohol, but looks like I'll have plenty of time to figure that one out. The witch hazel I found is buffered with 14% alcohol, so that's nice.

Most vodak isn't strong enough, though you've mentioned some that are.

The biggest thing is this: absolutely do not use denatured alcohol. That stuff was inve ted during Prohibition, and they got around the regulations by mixing it with various poisons that are deliberately hard to separate out. Even this might not be too much of a problem, except that some of the most common ones they use are contact poisons: if you leave them on your skin -you know, like you're supposed to do with hand sanitizer- you'll actually absorb the poison through your pores.

I kid you not, I've seen doctors falling for the denatured-alcohol hand sanitizer hoax. Panic is settling in, and even people who should know better are doing stupid shiat. If you're going to make your own sanitizer, use something safe.

Or get/make soap. This is one of those weird cases where it actually works better, as long as you use it properly (those hand-washing graphice we've been making fun of? Yeah, there's a reason for them). Plain soap will get you clean, which always helps, but it's not really known as a pathogen-killer. The thing is, unlike bacteria, coronaviruses have a lipid coat, and soap works by separating and isolating lipid molecules in general, so soap just loves to rip that shiat up. Here's a thread on the science behind this viral bloodbath. Sing the stupid little song, and stop worrying about sanitizer.

Everclear was sold out, people buying it for hand sanitizer. It's 95%, CDC recommends 60-90. You need water to enter the outer layers. Soap is better.

Yep, and it's what the CDC recommends, unless there's no soap/water available.  It was one of the funny things about our usual grocery shopping run this past weekend -- things like bleach and hand sanitizer were completely gone, but there was plenty of good old fashioned soap still in stock.
