I bought two 2oz bottles of hand sanitizer around three weeks ago (at regular price), and have barely used any of it. It's useful if you are out all day touching things, but I work in an office (and now at home) where I can easily wash my hands with soap and water.

It's because price gouging is not good for society.  But go ahead and price gouge.  Just don't complain when an angry citizen kills you.

Or you could put the sign up saying to use soap and put a 1-2 per customer limit on the sanitizer and get the same result.

Maybe this dickweed needs a visit from authorities to remind that gouging is illegal. Ask the Tennessee dude who ended up "donating" his stash.

Feel free to manufacture your own and sell it for $5 less, failmitter.  This is how markets work.  When something is scarce the price goes up.  When the price goes up more people make it.  When more people make it the price goes back down.

Sure it sucks if you absolutely must have hand sanitizer this very instant.  But have you considered carrying a bottle of tap water and some soap around instead? It might be slightly less convenient but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more effective.

That's the message people should hear. But in edgy times such as these, how do we get them to stop and listen? Easy. You make 2 ounces of sanitizer more expensive than 2 ounces of decent whiskey.

I'm not taking economic advice from a guy who thinks decent whiskey costs over $500 a bottle.

Yes it is good for society when that society is filled with morons buying out entire stores stock of the stuff because they are overreacting to the media scare tactics. Stores raising prices is the best way to get panicky morons to stop and think about how much of the stuff they actually need

Then maybe restrict the units purchased. Jacking the prices to where many people can't afford it just screws over the poor.

Playing dumb troll kek games with a pandemic that has killed thousands of people is probably not the best use of your time.

Or hell, maybe it is, but I find it hard to believe anyone is that worthless.

First bottle is $5, the next one is $50, and it's $500 each after that. If enough people do choose to stock up, you can bring in extra cases of product by air freight instead of waiting for your usual supply truck. It's a win-win.

How is that a dumb troll game? That's literally the best option per the CDC. Hand sanitizer works in a pinch where convenient, but the best method is still physical hand washing.

You have a choice here. Either buy the shiat or don't. It's not like anything else gets cheaper when demand rises. Hell, people die everyday because demand for energy causes the price to rise above what a family can afford to heat their home each winter.

Don't like it? Go somewhere else or just die. The world owes you fark all.

It's because price gouging is a source of societal friction. History is rife with examples about what happens when unscrupulous actors exploit desperate people in times of great societal strain. Spoiler Alert: if established institutions do not take care of bad actors then it will end with "mob justice".

The problem with price gouging is it makes it really difficult to keep anything in stock at a fair price.  If people see the grey market rate of $40/oz, then the assholes will buy up all the the normal priced product to flip it and the normal folks will hoard it so they don't have to buy it from the assholes.

/ Off to flag more assholes trying to flip N95 masks on Craigslist for $20 each

The writer actually says to be kind to your friends and family, but go all Gordon Gecko and price gouge the shiat out of strangers. Christ, what an asshole.

And while hand sanitizer isn't the only option (if soap and water is handy, use that, as he says), it certainly helps, and soap and water isn't always handy. Then he has the balls to compare it to him getting good deals on a vacation from "desperate" sellers, arguing that if it's okay for him to buy at deep discounts, it's okay for sellers to price gouge on high demand items. Vacation spending is comparable to spending on supplies that help during a pandemic... is something an asshole would think.

I cordially invite this piece of shiat human being to go fark himself.

Yeah, price gouging is farked up. I totally deserve a house on the ocean in Malibu for the price of a house in urban Detroit.

How dare they price gouge me?!?!??! Life is so unfair! I tell you what, we should all be required to sell our homes for the average price of an urban house in Detroit. Bummer that you paid $600k for that nice house in Chicago, by law, you have to sell it to me for the price of a used VCR.

Damn price gougers in the housing industry!

When you price things out of the reach of the majority of people during an emergency, the end result is exactly the same: The majority of people are unable to get necessary goods.

I don't have any hand sanitizer. Why? Because I wash my hands like a normal human being. Again, there exists a multitude of options that don't require you to buy gelled ethanol. Stop acting like hand sanitizer during this event is somehow analogous to insulin for a type-1 diabetic.

You will survive without it - to the extent that the CDC is actively telling people they are morons for using it and that simple soap and water - which is available EVERYWHERE - works better.

Or, from the other side, feel free to buy bootleg sanitizer, and enjoy your $5-less-expensive aloe gel with a bit of gasoline added for fragrance, and zero efficacy.

And people are not going to die if they don't have hand sanitizer. Wash your hands like a normal human being and stop being a complete bloody moron.

"CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands."

You are acting like people hoarding a purely back up option is somehow bad. It's not. This is market dynamics 101.
