washburn777: This feels like a direct attack on Joe Biden.

You jest, but this is almost certainly the reason. Amtrak is owned by the federal government, and Trump is petty enough to do it. He'd drop a nuclear bomb on the Delaware Memorial Bridge if he thought doing so might hurt Biden's feelings.

The answer to the question "Is Trump really petty enough to ______?" is always "yes," regardless of what you put in the blank.

This is a great theory, and I don't anything past Trump. But this is about halting nonstop service between NYC and DC. I don't think that impacts Delaware, and therefore Biden, in the least.

Besides, Biden's day of commuting to DC are pretty much done the last I checked.

The NY-DC service isn't non-stop, there's a stop in Dover.

Plus, Biden announced an upgrade to Acela about 4 years ago. Trump probably just found out about it.

According to amtrack.com/acela-train, there is a nonstop service:

Acela Nonstop
On Acela Nonstop you can travel uninterrupted from New York to Washington, DC, and back again. No stops and no disruptions mean you can travel faster than ever from the Big Apple to the capital. Trains depart from New York at 6:35 am Monday - Wednesday, and effective March 16, 3:25 pm Thursday - Friday. Trains depart from Washington, DC, at 4:30 pm Monday - Friday, so you can make an easy day trip and be home with time to enjoy your evening.

I'm assuming from the article this is the service that is ending

As a resident of Delaware, I would love to take the Acela to Dover. It would really cut down on the commute time.

//a lot of Amtrak trains stop in Wilmington

They say demand is down.  Amtrak may be government affiliated but it's hypothetically supposed to fund itself, so cutting a premium service that suddenly has very few passengers isn't surprising.  Airlines have been doing the same thing with flights to Italy.

Also you couldn't pay me enough money to take a flight to Italy.  I live in the Bay Area so the whole Coronavirus Experience will come to me for free.  Why would I deal with the hassle of flying to Italy?  I'd have to board my dog, and clear out perishables in my fridge, and put my mail delivery on hold, and so on.  I'll just stay home, thanks.

Wilmington DE is a stop on Acela routes, making it a commuter town for people who work or do business in DC. Lots of other Amtrak service connects Northern Delaware to DC, Baltimore, NYC, etc.

Work recently cancelled all non-essential travel indefinitely.  While remote job sites will still be accessible (almost exclusively through personal vehicle or air fare), conferences and program reviews will all be done via phone/vtc.  This means that the hundreds (and that is not an exaggeration) of Amtrak trips per month for my organization are cancelled.

The article's Acela line cancellation will not be the last one sidelined for a while.

From the headline, I thought there was going to be a bridge that collapsed while the a train was crossing it, leaving it suspended in mid-air across some chasm.

So instead of potentially sick business people traveling between Boston, NY, and DC sitting far apart in nice roomy well-ventilated train cars, they'll be crammed into short-hop 727s with recirculated air and 27" pitch seats and then let out into crowded airports. Brilliant!

Nowhere in the news stories do I see hard information on

. What was the capacity of these direct NYC/DC trains?
. How much of that capacity was typically used and how much has riders dropped?
. How much has passengers dropped for all NE corridor trains?

Likewise airline traffic is declining but I only see anecdotal news stories.

If people are flying on 727s, they are also time travelers, so that could become a problem.
