Well, they're a bit late in that guidance.

You would think the gagging flavor of glue they use on envelopes would scare a virus away. Would it hurt to make it fruit flavored or something?

I never lick envelopes. Look what happened to Susan Ross.

However there was a darker tone to some comments, with one angry individual responding: "You came up in my news feed in Google news."

That's just the "algorithm" bringing you things based on your own dumbassery.

/Wait...why is this a Fark greenlight?!

With all the stupid coverage, I am starting to root for the virus.  Anyone that believes this is a concern needs to be culled.

There is a reason for some concern, but it's more likely to depend on your circumstances...having a parent in a retirement home where someone tested positive, etc.

My concern level is really low.  I was supposed to go to Asia in May, but I changed my flights so I'll do that trip somewhere else overseas.

It's not that I'm afraid of catching it and dying....but I would hate to be quarantined, which lead to my change in plans.

Just as an aside, a top tip I learned on a TV show many moons ago was that you can repurpose a ball style deodorant applicator for sealing envelopes by refilling it with water once its done.

/Funny the completely useless things the brain retains.

It may not be rational to be in a panic over this but it is reasonable. We're getting daily news about extreme measures, not just from media analysis but from government policies as well. On top of that, the underlying worry is literal life and death. Panicking is the most natural response and those voices urging a calm and measured reaction are getting lost amid the sound and fury of apocalyptic predictions.

CSB time: few years back the city of Seattle was looking for a suspect in a local rape/murder. They developed a profile (White male, 20-40 blah, blah) and proceeded to mass mail to every male who fit the profile a letter saying you could be part of a class action lawsuit if you had a parking ticket between such and such dates.

Fill in your personal details, lick the envelop, mail it back and then they would take the DNA and match it against their evidence.

All unbeknownst to the recipient.

They didn't catch the guy, lied that they were a law firm (which is one lie cops can't tell) and swore that they only matched the samples against that one particular case.

I tossed it in the bin when I got it, but ever since have sealed all envelopes with a damp sponge.

End CSB

dammit just give me a login: What is meant by "novel" in reference to the coronavirus?

It hasn't been seen before - as opposed to say, a recurrence of SARS or MERS or the cold or something. It is just shorthand for COVID-19, whcih isn't any shorter, and so is likely a carry-over from before it was officially named.

You could cut that vector out entirely if you applied that cutting-edge "sticker" tech to all stamps, not just some. To not piss off all the stamp collectors out there, just put a drop of water on the back of the stamp if it isn't self-adhesive. It's probably PVA.

Wrong.  The reasonable response is to be reasonable.  Today's response is to panic.
