Wow.  Hurricanes blowing through both goalies and the zamboni driver catches their eye.  Sounds like an Adam Sandler/JCVD movie mashup.

Didn't this happen earlier this season? Not a Zamboni driver but still a backup goalie in his 40s with some equally Disney-worthy story?

/ So much happens every day hard to keep track.

I've officially thrown in the towel on the season.

I know the emergency goalie's been called in after one goalie got hurt, but Carolina losing BOTH roster goalies in one game?  Tikes.

And of course, it was the Leafs he beat.

Last year I think - guy played the last 10 or so minutes to finish a win. This guys the first to actually record the win

The Blackhawks had to use the amateur backup in 2018, he was an accountant. He had a few great saves and held out for the win.

But I can still use the line because I'm Brantgoose and I'm something you don't often see in the Sports time.

I'm Groot! Sorry, I'm Brantgoose!

So I understand this guy and his wife were sitting in the stands, first goalie goes down, his phone blows up with texts to go get dressed, so he heads off and she's sitting there alone, second goalie goes down and next thing she knows, the hubby is taking the ice AGAINST HER TEAM and proceeds to get the W.

Maybe I should pay more attention to sportspuck, this shiat is a lot funnier than the shiat that happens over in Cleveland handegg.

This has happened a handful of times.  It is really cool for the people that it happens to, but somehow they get screwed pay wise.  League minimum is 700k.  For one game minimum pay would be about 8500 dollars, but in the instances that this has happened the player gets a jersey and a couple hundred bucks IIRC.

Hockey is a fantastic sport for many, many reasons.  And not only is Dave Ayres a zamboni driver, he's the zamboni driver for the Leafs' AHL affiliate (their triple A club basically), the Toronto Marlies, and the Leafs practice goalie.  When he first took the ice he was in Marlies gear except for the jersey.

Yoink. Saving that for the playoffs, should Toronto make it of course.

Imagine if they miss the playoffs by 1 or 2 points. That guy probably won't be so welcome down at the bar for a while.

It was a crazy game last night. I had just said how great the second period was and all of the sudden mrazek goes down.  I thought the Canes were farked but luckily they were playing the leafs.

Canes played with playoff intensity as soon as Ayres went in and the Laffs barely touched the puck.  Then they stood around like pylons on D while Aho and Fogele just zipped past them.  Ayres did a fantasic job in the very improbable circumstances, but he had lots of help from both teams.  Would have loved to heard the post game talk in the Laffs locker room.  For both teams this was a huge night - if the Canes get through to the playoffs again and go deep, this is the game that got them on their way (similar to January last season when Brind'amour became the head coach and they went from the basement to the Conference Finals). Meanwhile in the Big Smoke, this is a game that will be stuck in thier heads for a long time.  I do like the Leafs and wish them well, but they make it about impossible to be a fan with this kind of farkery.  One of the best top 6 groups of forwards in the game and they managed 10 shots in 30 minutes.

I saw $500 and his jersey.  Apparently it used to be the EBUG didn't get paid at all, but it looks like that has changed since 2018.

Name another sport where a non professional could adequately play at the highest level for a game.

No.  The Hurricanes defense played like it was a game 7 for the last period.  He only face 10 shots all game and let two in.  At the same time the Leafs offense played like it was a game 7 and gave up 50 shots on goal.

Take some equipment manager and put him at qb and itd be a disaster.

Same thing on a basketball court.  He'd be -30 in a quarter

He's not only one of the practice goalies, but has also played for the AHL.  He's not some random dude off the street.

The position you are thinking of is the goalie in soccer.  Now that guy is worthless.

Literally any other team sport. Especially baseball, football, rugby and soccer. They just shelter the new player, make adjustments to take account of his shortcomings, and prevent the other team from exploiting him. Which is exactly what the Canes did.

Basketball probably not, because while it is a team sport it is very individual-focused, and the other team would pick the new player apart.

By no means is Ayers a professional hockey player. But he's been playing hockey all his life, the highest level he's played is Jr. B, and he practices with the AHL team regularly (like a sparring partner in boxing). So he is not coming in as a complete noob. He's had a lifetime of training, coaching, and practice to draw upon and at the very least look somewhat competent, as long as he doesn't see a ton of shots. Which he didn't.

soupafi: If the Canes win the cup, does he get his name on it because he was on the team?

No.  The usual qualification is half the regular season games (so 41) or one game in the Final.

There was a thread on Fark a few months back about what do think you could do in a game.

Run for a first down in the nfl.
Score a goal in the nhl.
Get a hit in mlb.
Get a basket in the nba.

The order of likelihood for me is:
NBA, nfl, mlb, nhl.

NBA and nfl are def possible.  Mlb is unlikely, but possible.  Nhl is nearly impossible.

No. Emergency backup goalies have seen playing time in the modern era NHL (1992) a total of THREE TIMES. So no, this does not happen every other year or so.
