"I don't rule anything out. I really don't rule anything out," Manchin said in an interview in his office amid a series of attacks from the president. "I'm always going to be for what's best for my country. Everybody can change. Maybe the president will change, you know? Maybe that uniter will come out, versus the divider."

West Virginia trifecta in play.

Before the usual suspects scream about kicking Manchin out of the party or primarying him, a couple of notes:

• Manchin actually does vote with the dems about 40 percent of the time.
• A republican would vote 100 percent with Trump.
• Manchin is still a democrat, which means he counts towards a potential democratic majority in the Senate, which is crucial for protecting Supreme Court decisions on abortion rights, gay marriage, etc. etc.
• Manchin represents a state that voted for Trump by a 40-point margin. A moderate dem could not win.
• Manchin defeated his progressive primary opponent in 2016 by a similar 40-point margin.
• Manchin is likely to remain a democrat, because (a) he doesn't need to switch, and (b) if he did, he would have very little power, where as now he holds a lot of power.
• In other words, Manchin is an asshole -- but he's our asshole.

But still, fark Joe Manchin. Just don't kick him out.

But I can't see any other Democrat winning Best Virginia.

I have to agree. The GOP is getting to the stage that if they hold any majority at all they're going to use it to prevent the Democrats from governing effectively. A majority in the senate would almost guarantee that absolutely nothing gets passed under a Democratic controlled government, just so they could blame the Democrats.

As long as Manchin doesn't sabotage progressive legislation, and toes the line when necessary then he should absolutely stay.

I'm curious what happens if endorses Trump. Will Trump's yuge ability to nurse a grudge slap Manchin down, or does his desire to have his ego stroked win?

I'm thinking technical acceptance with a lot of backhanded comments. "Can you believe this guy was dumb enough to try to oust me? At least he saw the light and endorses me now. Also, he's gotten better at blow jobs but he's still not great. Make Manchin Blow Great Again. Or vote for his opponent, I don't care, I win either way."

It's the Mississippi of the Mid-Atlantic states.

Think of Manchin as Susan Collins of the southern Appalachians. He isn't going to endorse Trump. He's just going to hem and haw as if he might, to show how fair-minded he is, and then he'll mostly sit on the sidelines in 2020 talking about how both sides have some good qualities.and also furthermore.

Which honestly doesn't matter. It's not like you're rolling out Manchin as a surrogate outside WVa, and it's not like WVa is in play. It still amazes me that the Manchin/Collins brand actually works, but here we are.

I don't see how Manchin wins re-election as a D next time around

note: he isn't up for re-election until 2024, so he is safe from Trump, Trump re-election and rebuttal.  so might as well go with the fascist tide...or there is kompromat on him...

This. I live here. I'd love to see someone more progressive, but -difficulty level, "WV".

2020-02-14 2:57:27 AM
You really can't expect that a WV democrat will be like a California Democrat. It's the frustration and elation of this particular party that it is diverse.
Don't like him? Retire him but as the poster above has pointed out. Difficulty level WV. Where the last person we ran through there for Prez told people to learn jobs that don't exist in the area as a path out of poverty. Where the opoid epidemic has ran so deep it's not uncommon for people on social security to be raising their grandchildren in dire poverty that would result in CPS intervention in other parts of the country.
Want to turn WV really Blue? Fund their social safety net. Christian left - send your missionaries there for real community service projects like school building, habitat restoration, big brother and big sister projects, and habitat for humanity. Whatever you do, don't promise these people their life will get better and then do nothing.

LOL. Not in a million years.

• As a swing-vote democrat, Manchin has enormous power. As a red-state Republican, he would have almost none.
• Plus, HE VOTED TO CONVICT DONALD TRUMP. So there's no way the R's would even have him.
